TEB is Cancelled

I think the idea is the skaters are NHK skate a SP and A FS and the scores are totaled and ranked against each other.

Then the skaters from TEB skate only a FS and the scores are added to the SP scores from TEB then they are ranked against the other skaters from TEB. Two sets of medals are then giving out to the two separate lists. Think of it like the same judges judging a novice and then junior event.

this is pretty much my idea. just has to happen in only ONE of the remaining GPs, though.

you still don't get me, you cannot compare a TEB skater's score happened in COR with a TEB skater's score happened in NHK.(because we cannot compare scores from different GP. cos different set of judging panels)
to have a complete extra long program session for the whole group of skaters in one event either COR or NHK is the only fair solution.
I suggest NHK, 1 money issue, 2, more time to prepare for all parties.
And what would you do with those who are going to compete at either COR or NHK anyway?

with regard to moving skaters

Chafik BESSEGHIER & Maxim KOVTUN are already at NHK
Roberta RODEGHIERO is already at COR
Cheng PENG / Hao ZHANG are already at COR
Vanessa JAMES / Morgan CIPRES and Tatiana VOLOSOZHAR / Maxim TRANKOV are already at NHK
Alexandra STEPANOVA / Ivan BUKIN and Madison HUBBELL / Zachary DONOHUE are at already at NHK

So some would have to go to both events over the next two weeks.

So what about people from TEB who are already assigned to NHK?

yeah, that is the only concern, that I had for this solution. I mentioned it also in my very first post about this.
that means this particular skater has to skate 2 longs in one event.
kinda a preparation for OG team event....

but seriously there is no better solutions......

it is gonna to tough for them.
but other than this....
i cannot think of a better solution or more fair and applicable solution...
if no make-up events for TEB.
I agree with only use SP results.

Double count the FS score?
The different panels at NHK and COR would be a problem.

Yes, but then a couple of skaters would have three events in three weeks in three different time zones. That must be hard.

This is where the idea of splitting the free skates over the two events comes in handy- to make sure no one has to perform free skates twice in a week. V/T and Kovtun go to COR, P/Z to NHK, etc.
Yes, this means that there will be some judging panel inconsistencies, but the law of averages would suggest that it won't make a massive difference to the scores. Most likely not big enough to make or break a skater's bid for Barcelona. It's still a bit of a problem, but much fairer than discounting the long program entirely IMO.
It seems like the most fair thing to do, if it can be organized quickly and if the ISU can afford it.

My deepest sympathy, thoughts and prayers are with everyone affected by the tragedy in Paris. At the moment I am earnestly praying everyone involoved at this particular event in Bordeaux to have a very safe, smooth and swift trip back home, without any more incident.

Yes, it is a problem but lesser of evil in my view. At least skaters will compete and will be scored.
A more costly solution would be to have the TEB judging panel scoring them in the remaining events. But I honestly do not see a big deal in having different judging panel.

That might work. Cause I know in baseball (Yes I like baseball as well. Go Nats!) in a few situations, like this past season with a Nats vs. Dodgers game, if there is electrical failure, the game gets suspended and gets picked back up at another day. Usually the next.

Now, yes I know baseball and figure skating are totally different in rules and how they're played out, but I'm saying suspended games/events might be possible.

Make up games or partial make-up games in baseball are always scheduled when the two teams are playing each other again whether that is the next day or the next series between the two. It is extremely rare for one to be scheduled at a completely different time and would likely only happen if the missed or partial game was late in the season and potentially had an effect on Division or Wild Card standings. It is not unheard of for a missed meaningless late season game to not be made up at all (it is rare, though--simply because it is rare for games to be completely canceled without a make up time possible). And it is worth noting that MLB is operating with a much larger budget, teams have exclusive access to their venues and employ staff to run them, issues like visas are handled upfront for the whole season and teams are in much closer proximity to each other.

Also, if an MLB game is suspended after 5 complete innings and cannot be resumed, it is considered a complete game for the purpose of standings.

These skaters are not scheduled to be in the same place again this season. Adding an LP for them at another event would cause just as many logistical issues as resuming the event later. And those scheduled to compete at the event where the extra LP is added would then be forced to do three programs rather than two which would give an advantage to their competitors who would not be doing the extra program--thus it could still affect GPF standings.

Having SP and FS in two consecutive days means that the competitors have to deal with whatever happened with their (and others') SP during their FS. So rescheduling half of the event wouldn't be fair to skaters in all other GPs.

Basically I think there is no good solution to this cancellation.

Some of the people earlier in this thread were acting as though this attack was nothing but an inconvenience to the sport. Yes, it sucks that the event was cancelled, but we need to remember why - hundreds of people were killed and there is an ongoing threat of terrorism not only in France but around the world. I, personally, support the decision to cancel as I'd rather see my favorites only skate the SP than be in serious danger.

As for what will happen to the competitors, I'd say just go ahead and use the SP rankings. Yes, it ruins quite a few people's chances, but there's not much else we can do. I can't imagine any of the skaters being able to perform their best after yesterday's attacks.

We, as fans, can be upset about the cancellation of the event, but we mustn't forget that it was done for the safety of the skaters we love.

My thoughts are with all of France today.

I don't think anyone thought that this attack was nothing but an inconvenience to the sport. We all paid our respects in the other forum thread in The Edge, where discussion about the attacks continues. This particular thread, to my understanding, is about the figure skating aspect, and how the cancellation affects our sport. Of course, all of our thoughts are with France.

I think that this is a time for us to remember that this forum is public and therefore open to the public. We often think that it is private and anonymous . I am sure that if we could not hide behind anonymous names our conversations would be vastly different. Many of you wouldnt say the things that you do if your were face to face with the person you were speaking about. As far as Phil being mean, petty and malicious, I would say that pretty much covers an awful lot of the conversations that go on here. Perhaps, this is an opportunity to re check how overly nasty we can get about these young competitors some times.
This is a figure skating forum - obviously people will be discussing figure skating on it.

Also, I wonder he found it worthwhile to pay attention to something so trivial as a figure skating board, and what was discussed on it?

I think it far worse that he would use this opportunity to be mean, petty and malicious.

I find myself a bit nonplussed by those of you who are focused on the unfairness of skaters losing the opportunity to compete at the GPF.

Is it fair? No, of course not. It's a shame for those who might have rebounded and medaled. But to play devils advocate, did any of you think that the the COC FD should have been rescheduled when HB had to withdraw after Kaitlyn got food poisoning?

Honestly, if losing out on an opportunity to compete at the GPF this year is the worst unfairness that these kids ever have to endure in their lives, they will be very fortunate. What's really unfair, IMO, is that some kids are born into poverty or die young from cancer, abuse or neglect, and that many people who innocently went out to dinner or a concert Friday night had to endure the terror of these attacks, and were killed, or may survive horribly maimed, as a result.

Baseball games that get suspended because of rain don't count unless the are past the 5th inning (half-way). Skating events are not half finished after the short program.

this is really not applicable, if you think about the details of implementing it. why we wanna make-up long competition through all these trouble, is because we wanna be fair to TEB skaters as much as possible.

Divide them will also bother 2 GP hosts. much more unnecessary trouble and hustle.

Sure. But, let's be real, if the World Series had been played in only five inning games this year, the Mets would have won, 4 games to 1.

And KC played like that all year. Yet, if they lost a game that was called after the 5th for whatever reason this season, fans accepted it. So easily that I can't tell you if it happened or not. It probably did.

By the way, halfway is the middle of the 4th.

Perhaps if the ISU goes with SP results, it can be a reminder to skaters and coaches that the SP does indeed count.

This is our free/personal time.

It is Phil's job. In a way Chicago Tribune is paying Phil to be "mean, petty and malicious" on their behalf.

I would like to hold Phil to a higher standard as a professional, but he does a good job of making me question that... maybe he is a good reporter after all. Don't they want to make us question things?
