The Japanese ladies

At least from what is being written, it sounds like the skaters want to pull all stops at the Olympics and go for broke. That seems to be the case with not just the Japanese skaters, but the US skaters seem to have similar thoughts (at least the men and pairs). I think the points based system encourages that. The focus is not so much on skating clean.

I hope Shizuka can skate two great programs in Torino. The Japanese ladies field is so deep it is surprising that they have not won many medals at worlds. At the past Olympics Midori was the only Japanese lady favored to win (in 92). Yuka Sato had a chance in 94 but she placed 7th in the SP and could not catch up. Fumie had only an outside chance in 2002, and 5th place was quite respectable for her. She will have to skate her best inTorino and even then I am not sure it will propel her to the podium. IMO Shizuka has the best chance of winning a medal in Torino. I have not seen Miki deliver a strong LP yet so I don't expect to see her higher than 5th place.

I love Shizuka, but I am a bit puzzled by the 3/3/3. She had a very difficult time all season even getting the 3/3 ratified ... most times they were downgraded to 3/2's.
I just don't get this.

Now, for Miki and the quad, it is probably not a bad idea ... because they seem to be lowballing her scores this season, and that would most likely get their attention.

Joe, I understand the 3/3 ... but a 3/3/3?
How much will it perk the judges up if she botches it?

I absolutely LOVE it when skaters take risks.

Let's hope this is not all talk and we actually see this happen. Something tells me it won't...talk is talk.

My comment stands in that I think one of these ladies is likely to be a serious spoiler.

I am all for skaters going for broke but if your 3/3's had difficulty being ratified, why risk a 3/3/3? She has so much going for her, I really like her ice coverage and edges.
