The Judging Controversy Thread

If the tech panel was "lenient," Yuna should have received level 4 for both her steps and spins. She received level 4s for those in 2013 Worlds. The rationale I've heard in the forum (from a self-claimed "knowledgeable" person) as to why her spin was level 3 is because her free foot was "not close enough to her head" during her layback. (hah) Steps levels are so obviously rigged so I haven't heard any rebuttal from even those with bad faith.

If people believe nothing should be done and this is just business as usual, then there is no hope for this "sport." And they should expect nothing less 4 years later.

Ill give you that Yuna's step sequence could and maybe even should be given level 4(5 if it existed!!) but spins?? Come on. I've seen you harp on Yulia's spins and Adelina's. Yuna had middle of the pack spins at best. Of the top level girls her and Caro are at the bottom. If you want fair judging practice so bad...why not use it yourself?

Well, a women can easily meet a level 4 for a spin without the quality being great. But anyway, no competition was ever decided on the level of a single layback spin since the point differential is so small anyway - it's the racked up GOE that matters for spins really.

This is completely true.

While I agree about Yuna and Mao, and I thought Julia was overscored, if we are going to compare Mao's Lp 2010 with these scores, Julia is hardly the one only there to single out, with Gracie's 136 from FS with a fall, her pcs have jumped up too in very little time, in general if you notice the marks for Lps have gone really up the last couple of years, this year by a mile, and the final flights all get above 130 with a clean skate, while I remember in 2011 120-130 was a thrilling score for most.

If Men FS performances were set up i ll ask my money back.:)
I agree. All the scores are suspect and especially selective judgments from the tech panel. I just brought up Yulia as an example because her case is one of the most egregious. I believe Gracie was also gifted, which triggered Ashley's mouthing.

Indeed. Levels are a different thing, just as a triple and a double jumps are different. Yuna met the requirement for level 4 spins and actually received level 4s before this event with the same elements. I would agree that she may not receive the highest GOE on her spins but that is a different matter from levels.

I think I now better understand Yuna's equanimity towards scores/medal/corruption. It is thought-provoking. I may have to think about it.

Way off topic but what's not to love about Yuna? Arguably the best skater ever or at least this era. She's like a wise owl who always floats above everything in terms of off ice. Now I'm gushing and I've seen that video countless times.

I think Yuna has been receiving level 3 on her layback b/c she doesn't so a biellmann.

:biggrin:Do you think that when worlds is finally here, this conversation will come to an end? Or will it continue to the next Olympics?

Ah. I think I've heard of that. If that's the case I stand corrected. Yes, I know she dropped biellmann due to her back pain. (She has a weird body, lol)

Edit: I also stand corrected on her other spins. She received level 4s for her flying camel and combination spins. (I love her upside-down camel! Does any other skater do it?)

Not funny at all if it proves true.

If proof comes than of course not!! The notion of this thread still going until next Olympics well..

If I could open the vaults or get the judges recordings I would. I'm all for fair. The only thing I'm against is blaming the Russian skaters and tearing apart of people's character.

slightly an aside, thank goodness for yuna's character. i would be pissed and throwing a ******* fit if i were her (a la wagner). she took it gracefully, like a champion would.

Blaming Russian skaters is the side-effect. Blaming the character of Russian people is the worst thing that could happen in situations like this. ISU is an international organization and it has created a system that is everything but transparent. End of story. Before that is solved, all discussions are actually meaningless.

The first thing to do is to end with the anonimity of judges. So for me, the next chapter of this story will come in June. Yet I'm afraid for others it will come after the first Worlds score they won't like

With the kindest wave I've ever seen!

Kerrigan vs Baiul is still being discussed today and it is 20 years later, and that was a far less controversial result, with far less reason to suspect outright collusion, cheating, and even event fixing than this waas. For better or worse the raging controversy over this result isnt dissapearing anytime soon. If this thread itself was still going in 4 years time, now that would be funny.

Chances are that if it weren't for judges' anonimity, this thread would be a lot shorter. :rolleye:
