Alois Lutz (1898-1918) of Austria invented the Lutz jump and performed it for the first time in competition in 1913.

Since then, the following skaters have been credited with landing the first double, triple and quad Lutz in competition:

Ladies:

Men:

Who do you think has the best technique today?

Yuna Kim of course. Effortless, perfect, beautiful. I also think of Gracie Gold. When she hit that first jump in her FS at Worlds my jaw dropped....if only she had kept it together for the rest of the performance....

Yuna and Gracie? No way. Not even close. Elizaveta Tuktamysheva has the truest, biggest and cleanest Lutz among the ladies. I can't wait til she starts hitting it consistently again.

All around, Yuna's lutz is what I believe the most consistent and there are never any UR or edge calls. I love Gracie's height and distance into hers though.

There's the obvious, Boitano:

Also one of my favorite examples of a really good lutz was done by Michael Chack in his FS at the 1993 US Olympic Festival:

Scott Hamilton always had a very clear outside edge on his lutz and in his prime like at 1982 Nationals.

Others:

Harding had fantastic height (especially for her time)

Wylie had such a deep entrance edge

Petr Barna

Lutz was also one of Urmanov's best jumps

Yuna Kim has the greatest lutz i have seen, fast, high, all you need in that jump, but gracie gold is not far behind her. Have you seen how high that girl gets, one day she will top the roof of the stadium

I think Ito and Harding had the best height and flow out, although Yuna's air position and consistency are better. My favorite lutz of lesser known skaters is Malanina's.

Before Frank tried to fix her's technique. Her jumps are getting smaller. Fortunate that her 3z-3T is still good.

I was in Oakland in 1991 and I couldn't believe how high, clean, and well checked, all of Tonya's jumps were. She was a tiny little thing which is not how she looked on TV. Truly shocking !

I would also say that the " Truest " Lutz's were performed by Malanina and my skating fantasy wife....Maria Butyrskaya..:)

What a pity Tonya wasted her talents. :scowl:

I know..... I really appreciated her raw talent and I try to remember her wonderful skating before 1994. Very sad.

I remember the first time I saw Harding on television. As I recall, she was an also-ran at nationals, but her program was shown because she was a promising newcomer. She was so fresh and exciting and natural then. It's so sad how things turned out.

No surprise but Yuna has the cleanest/clearest edge for the lutz jump.

For men, it would be sort of the opposite, right? Considering that women tend to flutze while men tend to lip
