The Shizuka Thread (Teenagers Not Wanted)

Hey Joesitz

The BABY Ballerinas have to first become Ballerinas. Its a process the babies havent finished the process.

What do you mean "Teenagers not allowed" in the Title??
It has nothing to do with the age of the posters. I had originally wanted a discussion about the 3 teenagers who are entered into the Olympics. But the thread got sidetracked to the more mature Shizuka.

If you would like to compare and contrast Miki, Caro and Kimmie, please do.

If your interest is only in Irina, Sasha and Shizuka, well, there are plenty of threads about them.

Joe

I get the feeling that Kimmie is being overrated and overestimated just because of the success that U.S. teenagers have had in this event in the past. This is a new scoring system, and judging by how far behind she was to Cohen at Nats, it's not looking good for her. Lots of skaters could fill that 20-point gap between Kimmie and Cohen. I think top 10 for her would be a great accomplishment. We here in the US I think tend to want too much too soon from these skaters.

Miki and Carolina, OTOH, I see as medal contenders. They both have their inconsistencies, however, so we'll just have to see if they can hold up under pressure. I think this topic CAN be related to Shizuka, et al. because Ando and Kostner could both lose to these older gals if they mess up.

LOL. Exactly my thought. These three nowhere near baby ballerinas. I believe the words were first used around 1999 and 2000 when NNN,Sasha,Kirk, etc. first burst into the scene?

I think Miki peaked about a season and a half ago. And debuting a new (not revised and revisited) program at Olys is risky, even for those with the stronger nerves. She has looked even less like wanting to be on the ice than Shizuka I think.

I don't get the hype on Kostner. I was quite disappointed with her at Skate Canada....no, not her best event, but her touted speed and other qualities, I didn't see the big deal. The judges seem to disagree, and of the three "baby ballerinas", I'm sure she'll finish the highest, maybe even on the podium. Not sure if it will be deserved, IMO. Hopefully it will.

Kimmie, I think it would be a major accomplishment at her first senior MAJOR competition, to finish in the top ten or 8. There are too many more experienced, and frankly, better, skaters there that should finish ahead of her with clean skates due to PCS.

They were first used, literally, in the early 20s when the Ballet Russe first toured Europe. I'll spare you the story.

I think Dick picked up the phrase baby ballerinas for figure skating. I don't remember whom he referenced them to.

The Diva came a little later. I have no idea why that was picked up?

Imo

Carolina won't hold up under the pressure and I don't think Ando is up to it this year (I think she is out of shape). Kimmie has the best chance to pull it together imo.

My money is on Kostner. If she can put down the big jumps, the crowd will bring her home the rest of the way.
