Thoughts on Satoko Miyahara's skating

because she is not "The chosen one"

Was she "the chosen one" during the year that Mao took off? I had stopped watching figure skating for quite awhile, so were they desperate to heavily promote someone new in her absence?

i think people had high expctations from Kanako after Mao took off and Akiko retired but it didnt happen and Satoko stepped in as well as Rika

Thank you for that clarification. I had taken time off from following skating and was having a hard time remembering the time framework. Probably the same can be said in Shoma's case. How on earth do they ever fill a vacuum left by Takeshi, Tatsuki, Daisuke, Nobu, and Takahiko, and others I'm probably forgetting. Of course they will look to their best juniors...I do dislike the Satoko bashing and find it tiresome. I, for one, am looking forward to seeing her at Skate Canada. In fact, she is one of the reasons I decided to make the trip.

”The chosen one" was supposed to be Kanako but she didn't live up to the expectations. Satoko and Rika were the leaders in ladies (with Satoko getting silver at Worlds - "criminal" according to some posters here so believe me, if I were to defend her every time there are Satoko bashing posts, I'd spend 24/24 hours on this forum ) but none of them became media darlings. In fact for the first part of the season the media was focused on the Yuzuru Hanyu vs Tatsuki Machida drama, then the Tatsuki Machida retirement drama, then the Mao Asada announcing her comeback drama. Satoko's World medal almost went unnoticed.

This year media focuses on Yuzu of course, Mao, Shoma and certain Pyeongchang hopes who is "the chosen one " as well... Satoko disappears in grey... that's it, then she will train hard,( she always does) shows consistency, somehow manages to get medals.. but only 2 min appearance in 1 hour figure skating TV review and bashing on forums.. thats what she gets.

I'm probably considered a basher even though I've done both positive and negative video reviews of her jumps. I've always liked her programs and admire her interpretation. Heck....the only reason I ever made a jumpamatron of her was to counter the IMO overly loud Satoko supporters who would show up in thread after thread crying foul and that she was so massively underscored. My only goal wasn't to "bash" but to instead show that she was getting a lot of points on questionable jumps already and that TES benefitted her as much and probably even more than any PCS shortcomings imagined.

Anyway...label me and others as you will. I'll always root for the girl to do her best but Mao and Wakaba are who I hope lead Japan next year.

I remember your comments and jumpmatrons well.. no you aren't considered as a hater or a basher, I am not speaking about reasonable critique..really I am not uber or a blind person I know well that she has issues, reasonable critiques should be accepted well and I am also not talking about matter of taste. I admire Wakaba for her jumps and I love Mao for her background and trail in history .. so I hope whoever does best the one will lead Japan.

Sounds pretty familiar. If it's the one I'm thinking of, it's the one that had 2 minutes (if that) of Shoma -- lying on the ice after he completely got the wind knocked out of him at Worlds and then showed him with tears running down his face and wiping his nose in the K & C. Really?! I understand TV likes drama but -- he was ranked third in the world and got a gold, silver, and bronze in his GP events. Kinda seems like that was worth mentioning. ( I think at that point he hadn't performed his (cheated) quad flip that has been discussed ad nauseum. )

Well in case Mao and Wakaba won't lead Japan next season (like people hoped Mao was going to lead Japan in 15-16), what I hope is that some people won't blame Satoko and her shortcomings for Mao and/or Wakaba's mistakes. Unfortunately, once Mao came back the bashing doubled from 14-15 to 15-16. Including bashing from Mao fans who used to defend and praise Satoko in 14-15. They know who they are.

I also want Rika. I'm pretty afraid she'll be the one left off the worlds team, but she's always such a joy to watch :sad21:

On the other hand, I want Mao and Wakabby (and Liza) to give us amazing 3As!

I don't think I've ever seen any positive videos you made of Satoko, but whatever. I think the "overly loud Satoko supporters" are far out numbered by the overly loud Satoko bashers on this forum, who can't seem to appreciate any of her other qualities because of her "questionable jumps".

I defended every one of these jumps on GS as being good!

I hadn't learned anything about resolution yet so the quality was terrible. :slink:

Out of curiosity, what exactly makes her jumps in that program good? What is the difference between those and the jumps in the negative video reviews?

I thought the rotation was much better here.

I guess what I don't like about Satoko is her tiny, tiny jumps. It is almost as if she's jumping over fleas on the ice.

She's been doing 3Lutz-3Toe is for the SP and 2A-3Toe is for the LP. You gotta put them in constantly to make sure you can do them in actual competitions. Why not put them in the exhibitions.
This girl is treating any performance as real practice and people still find a reason to bash her. Grind those teeth and seethe a little more if it makes you feel better.

I like her new FS and EX, and I hope to also like her SP. I've got only good things to say about her material this season so far :agree:

I really love her arms and her SS, I think she's a lovely skater, her programs need more oomph for me but I will see her live in October. I feel bad for her tiny jumps because they must be a huge pain in the neck for her but she can only do so much. She's a hard worker, you don't skate consistently for an entire season without hard work. People will complain and harp on her for doing 2 2A-3Ts and everything but she's not the one judging her own jumps and she's only trying her best to maximize her points under the current set of rules which she didn't write.

Totally agree about her being a hard worker. It's why I find it impossible to root against her.
