Ok..so over the weekend when I was watching all the skating that I taped, I thought about the demise of COI.

So I was wondering what is going to happen to the skaters that made their living from that show. I dont' think that Rudy, Surya etc. coach or do anything else that I am aware of that makes an income.

I say this because very rarely do you see Surya and Phillipe Candeloro in a skating show like I did this weekend.(sorry I can't remember which one.)

Any one have any insights or thoughts about this? Do you think that you will see these skaters on SOI next year? Would any of the COI skaters make a good fit with SOI?

Rudy IIRC did coach at one time, and I think he does a bit of his own choreography... so I think he'd have a good career post-show skating

Surya and Phillipe were in the Christmas/Holiday show which featured Clay Aiken...

Personally I don't want to see Surya or Phillipe in SOI... Surya's "skating" annoys me, and Phillipe's a one trick wonder - let's rip off our shirt shall we? - and I think SOI is better off without it lol

What happens now is anybody's guess. One thing for sure is skating for a living in the US is not going to be an option for many skaters in the future. I'm sure Olympic Champions and the like will always have opportunities if they want to pursue them, but skaters with more modest credentials will find it tough to make a living. It will be interesting to see what SoI comes up with. If they want to include eligible skaters they will have to change their touring dates. If they want to expand their cast and hire some of the skaters from CoI then they will have to change their format. Their show is built around the concept of a small cast and group numbers. Would people accept a new format? Also adding to the size of the cast might not be cost effective. They survived in part because they were a leaner opperation than CoI. What is really sad is if SoI stays a winter tour and doesn't incorporate eligibles, these eligible skaters will lose the opportunity to make money needed for training. Perhaps there will be tour opportunities for them in places like Russia and Japan, but I doubt the money is as good as it was on CoI in its heyday. And as foreign skaters they won't command the top salaries that the local skaters get. It is all very sad, indeed.

Luck for us in Canada, SOI happens later in the season so some of our eligable skaters usually take part in the show. It will be interesting to see what changes take place for you in the States and if they end up affecting us here in Canada.

well i am sure that a few of the skaters will join SOI. SOI is thirsty for new stars... not that many few faces go into that nowadys. Most skaters retire and start a new career, not tour all year.

Who would these new stars be? If CoI had any big stars left they woudn't have folded in the first place?
