Re: Soap Opera and Skating

Just two guesses:

<blockquote style="padding-left:0.5em; margin-left:0; margin-right:0; margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; border-left:solid 2">Who sued a TV network and won?</blockquote>

Kati Witt?
(everything that sounds like showbiz remembers me of her)

<blockquote style="padding-left:0.5em; margin-left:0; margin-right:0; margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; border-left:solid 2">Who hired a bodyguard because of threatening letters?</blockquote>

Tonya Harding?
(just a faint memory I'm not sure of)

<blockquote style="padding-left:0.5em; margin-left:0; margin-right:0; margin-top:0; margin-bottom:0; border-left:solid 2">Who died young of cancer?</blockquote>

Ludmila Pakhomova died in 1986 (I think) of leukemia (sp?) and she still competed in 1976....

Re: Soap Opera and Skating

tdnuva,
Yup, the bodyguard was Tonya Harding. There was an article during the 1993/1994 fall season that she had hired a bodyguard. Turns out it was her husband's bud Stant, and yes, she apparently paid him a lot.

And the tragic early death was Lyudmila Pakamova.

But the successful litigant I meant was not Witt.

Re: Soap Opera and Skating

What was Debi Thomas's license plate at the time of the 1988 Olympics.

SK84AU ?

Re: Soap Opera and Skating

Who sued a TV network and won?

Dorthy Hamill?

Hmm. I gather that should mean something...
sk8 - skate
4 - for
skate for ..?? Sorry I'm no natural English speaker, what for stands "au"?

Re: Soap Opera and Skating

Well, English is my mother tongue and I don't get it either. It's suppose to be "Skate for Gold" but I don't get it.

Re: Soap Opera and Skating

Au is the chemical abbreviation for Gold. I remember that from my science days in high school. :D

Re: Soap Opera and Skating

When you say Maria's boyfriend was murdered, do you mean Maria <em>Butyrskaya</em>? And how did it happen? He was in the Russian Mafia?

Isn't the skater-oncologist Tenley Albright?

Re: Soap Opera and Skating

That was indeed Debi's plate. (Remember Debi was a pre med and had to take lots of chemistry, so yes it is Skate For Gold)

And yes, Tenley is the oncologist.

Dorothy was not the successful litigant.

I do not know the exact circumstances of Maria Butyrskaya's boyfriend's death, nor whether he was in the Russian Mafia.
I do not believe the crime has been solved. I would appreciate knowing more on this story.

So remaining open questions:

<div style="text-align:center">Who broke both legs at once?
Who changed his last name to please himself?
Who invented a substitute for shoe polish?
Who sued a TV network and won?

And there is a question of berthe's ghost about an Olympic gold medallist coaching another gold medallist that is still open
answer isn't Heiss/Goebel-hegot bronze.

and a sister coaching a world gold medallist that I think are still open. (answer isn't Rudi, he got bronze)

And these two are driving me nuts</div>

<<Who invented a substitute for shoe polish?>>

Is this Totmianina and Marinin?! I thought it was them who invented that SkateTape stuff that you can put on your boots to cover up the scuff marks. I could be wrong but I know its a pairs or dance team. Gosh, I am drawing a blank but I think its them.

Re: Soap Opera and Skating

Kwan1212, Yes it is a pair or dance team that invented a substitute for shoe polish, but not T&M.

DonnaML, yes it was Karen Magnussen who broke both legs (I believe during a world competition) and came back later to win World's. This is one of the great rehabilitation stories, and a credit to her courage.

So remaining open questions:

Re: Sister Act

Berthe's Ghost,

Is the sister that coached a World Gold medallist Karen Kwan coaching Michelle Kwan (at least partially) last year? I know she helped with choreography.

Re: Who sued a TV network and won?

EllenK, Yup, is was Toller. He sued (I think CBC?) for wrongful termination of contract and won. The details are in his books.

Re: Soap Opera and Skating

Donna,

Thanks for the hint. I knew this one but couldn't place it.

Charles Sinek invented a substitute for shoe polish. This was one way he and his wife could afford to continue ice dance in the us.

Re: Soap Opera and Skating

Yes, the Skatetape inventors are Charles Sinek and Beata Handra.

The only case I can think of one US OGM 'coaching' another would be the fluff coaching pieces where Peggy is working with Sarah. Can this be what you're after, berthe's ghost?

Skating Before and After

Skaters have had some interesting non skating qualifications, and so have their parents. And some interesting things that they did both before and after skating.

Here's some more questions (and berthe's ghost, hope you can find some questions for me, too!).

1. What world gold medallist did the coach of Rogoezcy and Sallay also coach (and who was this coach)?

2. Who married Elaine Zayak's coach?.

3. Who married her agent?

4. Who makes jewelry?

5. Who owns a gift shop?

6. Who was a vampire?

7. Who worked on a version of the Rocky Horror Show?

8. Who was a waterski champion?

9. Who was a gymnastics champion?

10. Whose father was a gymnastics champion?

11. Who was a roller skating champion (not Tara)?

12. Who invented the concept of skates where the blades were fixed to the boots?

13. Who, other than Paul Wylie, lived with Paul Wylie's family?

14. Who owned a trucking company?

15. Who was the honorary chairman of an Olympics although he/she had not coached or skated for over 15 years. Which Olympics?

16. Who was advertised as Le Patineur du siecle?

17. What non Japanese skater speaks fluent Japanese?

18. Who other than Dick Button won an Emmy?

19. Who posed nude in American Playboy?

20. Who had a close relationship with a credit card company?

Have fun!
