Not win, but a podium finish was reasonable to expect. Her 4CC score would have given her a bronze here by a wide margin.
Then again, this was her first event with her new programs in front of ISU judges. We will probably see improvement by Cup if China.

That sounds more reasonable. Hope we see an improvement from all of the skaters as the season progresses.

Right. I wouldn't expect her (or any of the other skaters for that matter) to be in 4CC-style shape right now.

And all things considered it seems very odd to criticize Amanda or imply she "blew it." For pete's sake, it those Ladies skate their best no way is Amanda making the podium. So it is early in the season and we saw some ragged skating from a bunch of them. :sheesh:

ETA: Not to mention that if Amanda is also working on her new Pairs programs it seems unlikely that her singles programs are as far along as the skaters who finished ahead of her.

I'm sort of confused by Amanda's jump layout in the SP. Is her 3f really consistent enough to put it in the SP? Instead of 3t-2t, 3f, 2a it seems like it would make more sense for her to do 3t-3t, 3s, 2a b/c it has a higher base value, she's more consistent with those jumps, and her 3t and 3s jumps are of such good quality that the GOE she gets for them would help boost her score. She's done 3t-3t in the past and her 3t is huge and solid, so I have no doubt she could do that combo, and likely more consistently than she can do the 3f.

Was wondering - where is Caroline? Has she skated anywhere yet this season? Mirai was injured otherwise she would have skated at the JO. But why hasn't Caroline been at any of the late summer/early season events?
If her first time showing the new programs will be at a GP it seems like she is the one who might be facing a little extra presuure to do well.

regarding amanda dobbs-it tells me that she should concentrate either on single's or pairs to be more competitive.
yes it is early in season, yes doing both might help her in each area a bit. but the competition itself is much more competitive than in earlier years (in my estimation ) for her to be medaling in both or in one. she needs to concentrate her energy more in one area. she might do better.

As far as we know, she has only skated at Champs Camp. She seems to have made a favorable impression on Lynn Rutherford. As for why she hasn't skated publicly, I guess Miss Tammy has a plan.

RD, the topic got a little slow so I wanted to share this tidbit with a US Lady from the past. It is a clip from the TV Quiz show "To Tell The Truth" and figuring out who the real "Elaine Zayak" is was the point of the game.

Younger fans or international fans who don't know Elaine very well can play along.......but no cheating ;).

Hahahaha!!!!!! Oh that would be so awesome if they could do a show like that today for people who are clueless about figure skating.

Anyway. I was completely stumped although I at least did narrow it down to 2 or 3.

She did SEVEN TRIPLES in 1981? wow!

Every one of them with some kind of transition in or out. She had 3t, 3s, and her weakest, 3Lp. She also could do a triple toe walley. She could do 2lz3t and 2A3t as well. Some how these last two seem more impressive in these days of underrotated second jumps.

Thanks

That was impressive to watch even today. She looked so calm and deliberate and polished throughout despite being only 15 and doing so many difficult jumps. Very nice spins in addition to jumps and her skating looks smooth.

Her 2axels are really powerful, no? I wonder if she would have been trying 3a had she grown up in this era.

ETA: Woah, this story sure got buried in the Nancy-Tonya saga. She made a comeback to nationals 10 YEARS after turning pro and finished fourth. :jaw:

It's amazing how many important skaters from the past I have yet to discover...

I am not sure if Elaine ever worked on a 3A. Don't forget back in 1981 only a few Ladies had a 3Lz and 3F.

Here is 14 year old Tiffany Chin showing a 3A back in the early 80's.

ETA: Here is Tifanny's LP from '84 Natls. She was with John Nicks during this part of her career and it is easy to see his influence. USA also had Roz and Elaine but Tiffany was my favorite back then.
What could have been as she had so much talent!

Yes, that was a wonderful moment in the 1994 Nationals. Especially because we needed some relief from the distressing attack on Nancy, it was wonderful to see Zayak do so well, so long after her amateur career. Her performance and Michelle's were the uplift of the evening.

Back to the future - we have three Ladies at NHK - Rachael, Ashley and Caroline.
Any predictions? Will one of them medal in Japan ?

I think Wagner is most likely to do the best out of the three of them. Flatt usually gets off to a slow start, and Zhang as we all know is trying to pick herself up after a major slump.

Tiffany I knew about :) She seems to be more talked about these days than Elaine, Tiffany was certainly an amazingly gifted prodigy. Her story always makes me so sad.

Joesitz, the Dean of Golden Skate, has been missing in action lately, so I feel obliged to stick up for "correct edge take-offs" on his behalf. :)

Elaine didn't really have a triple toe Walley in the sense of the counter-rotated jump off the back inside edge. What she did was a "Walley entrance" (outside 3-trun instead of inside 3-turn) to a toe loop. I think Brian Orser did it both ways, too.

So Elaine's 7 triple programs were something like 2 or 3 triple Salchows and 5 or 4 triple toes. Hence the current "Zayak rules" -- you are not allowed to do more than two of the same jump.
