Chatted with mom on Yahoo IM today and got this out of her

Parents: he said he's not down there to give medical aid....this just happens to be a fairly new va facility that the government had shut down 4 and a half years ago (a budget cut). He said it is an awesome place....has 60 rooms that can hold 3 people each, or 4 if they are family......he is helping refugees sheltered there with whatever they need.....they are called "residents" and he is "staff"......

Parents: it's basically a homeless shelter.....

Parents: he said there are all types of people there.....some are very grateful for anything they do for them and others aren't so much....some have addictions and spend all their time trying to get different drugs from the staff by playing sick or in pain.....dad wore his buzz lightyear scrub yesterday and a little 8 year old boy started calling him Mr. Buzz...he told him he would have to wait til he gets back to the shelter from school to see who your dad is today....he's gonna wear the Nemo one with Marlin on it....so tell aunt juju that her idea was great, even though she probably didn't know it at the time she bought it...

Parents: some of the residents must not have indoor plumbing where they evacuated from, cause they keep plugging the toilets and some of them just do it to be mean

Parents: but your dad says for the most part this is an awesome experience

Parents: he bought a white tourist trap t-shirt and is having everybody he works with sign it before they leave, so he'll have a momento of his time there....and he's eating up rolls of film taking pictures of everybody

Parents: he took his blood and gore album [this is what we call his hunting and fishing brag book lol] down there and it's been all over the place....the other there are just in awe of his hunting and fishing

Parents: we all KNOW who's idea the alaskan fish feed is

Parents: never mind i have to figure out how to get 150 lbs of salmon and halibut boxed up and out to fedex by tomorrow morning

they're having an Alaska Fish Feast on Saturday so she's got a lot of fish (150+ lbs!!!) to FedEx (on Unca Sam's dolla!) to him today.... my parents are too odd lol

Toni, that is womderful.

We have some evacuees here. A group was taken to Camp Dawson in Kingwood and they are gradually being placed in more permanent housing. An article in the paper said that of group in Kingwood over 50% were convicted criminals. One family with three children ages 14, 11, and 4 have settled here in the Kanawha Valley and we have invited them to our Girl Scout costume dance on 10/28 as guests of our troop. They are now in a house but have very little. The father has a job and seems very nice from our phone conversation. We are hoping to show them all a good time...keep your fingers crossed.

I'll cross my fingers and toes and pray that everything goes well... that is awesome of your GS troupe :)

dad has some awesome fish dishes for salmon and halibut so the people down there will not be disappointed....

I am waiting to hear if Mom got it sent off with no problems lol

I wish I could be down there to see it... (I am so tempted to email a bunch of news programs down there to go to the "event" just so I can see my daddy  I miss the guy!)

Toni,

sounds like both Mom and Dad are into this undertaking. Did Mom manage to send off the fish? And will Dad wear his Nemo shirt for the fish feast?

she is mailing the fish off this morning...

and Jo mom is going to suggest that he wear a Nemo shirt (just asked her for ya and she liked the idea... even though I think it's a bit morbid!)

yes but to be EATING fish while wearing NEMO... that is morbid

mom ended up mailing 121 pounds this morning.... way too much fish if you ask me lol

way too much fish? Nah, the feast will be well attended I'm sure.

So, did Dad take some Hawaiian shirts? Or should he just wear a fur coat?
