US Team: 4CCs and Worlds (updated)

Ashley's out of 4CC. Mirai's in.

She didn't even wait a day to think about it. I told you. She wants to take this time to focus on worlds.

Secretly I wanted a match up between her, Gabby, Kaetlyn, and Satako so she could get a pre-worlds face off.

Happy for Mirai though. 4CC should be fun.

Ross is 1st alternate for 4 CC over Max but not over Max for worlds. Huh? Why the switch for Max?

Good for Mirai. Cheer up Mirai. At least she gets to skate on the Olympic rink before Ashley does. And hopefully that foreshadows her qualification for the Olympic team next year.

I think it's a good decision for Ashley to skip 4CC's, she seems to know herself well enough to know when she needs to peak. It's better to focus on her technical issues rather than go to a competition that could do her more harm than good. She know's how to compete, she just needs to continue sharpening her technical arsenal.

And I am also happy Mirai gets to compete again, I think she'll be looking for a redemption skate here.

Yeah, but I still feel for her. She worked so hard and came in just 1 spot short. You could see the frustration in her face. I was really hoping she would make the podium.

She did the same last year and got a silver at Worlds.

Don't mess with something that works.

I assume that the selection procedure/criteria for Four Continents (which I don't think I ever have seen spelled out) are different from those for Worlds (which we have seen spelled out).

A decision must have been made that Max met the Worlds criteria better than his friend Ross did.

Thrilled that Mirai is going to Four Continents :dance2:.

I'm surprise people thought that the feds were going to make her go. She didn't go for the last four years and is done well at world. Plus last year she got a silver at worlds. She was NEVER going to 4CC. Even if it is the Olympic site next year.

Mirai needs the ranking points from 4CC to get two GP assignments.

And the two GP assignments' results would be a factor if she finds herself in 4th place again in the 2018 nationals.

I for one never thought USFS would force Ashley to go to Four Continents.

I did think that it was possible that Ashley herself might want to go to Four Continents because of the Olympic venue.

The Olympic podium obviously is a major goal/priority for Ashley, and giving herself the best shot by preparing in every way possible -- such as by getting experience in the Olympic venue -- would have made perfect sense (regardless of her pattern in previous years).

I support her choice to do whatever she thinks is best for her. No criticism from me that she has chosen not to go.

Classy act, Ashley Wagner, withdrawing from 4CC's today rather than waiting a week or more. Kudos to Ashley ....and all the best to Mirai! The US needs Ashley to shine at Worlds and Karen/Mariah to be strong in order to keep 3 spots.

Vincent Zhou is still first alternate for worlds. So he'd still have to get TES somewhere. So does that mean he'll still end up to get Bavarian open?

I think USFS made a bad decision - they should have gone with the top 2 men in order to have the best shot at getting the three spots for the Olympics. If anyone else had finished in the finished in the 3rd spot, Vincent would be going to Worlds. No way would they have ever bumped Vincent for Max even if he finished 3rd.

I guess they bumped Vincent for Jason and 4CC in order to give Vincent enough time to re-work his Senior programs for Juniors. Then he has still have to get the Junior TES.

I feel horrible for Vincent.

Isn't Karen Chen still eligible for Junior Worlds? Wonder if they talked about bumping her too.

He's been competitiong as a junior internationally all season, so no need to rework programs.

Vincent is valuable to help US get full JGP and Jr. World spots. I also think he has a shot at winning the junior world title. He already had junior TES from his JGPs. He actually didn't have senior TES for worlds. Though he still has to get it now since he's first alternate for Worlds.

She is, but she needs more senior exposure. If she had gotten fourth, she's probably be going.

I did not realize that but I still thinks USFS made a bad decision. If you move up to Seniors and get 2nd at Nationals, I think you really want to go to Senior Worlds - Junior Worlds would be viewed as more of a consulation prize not the Golden goose.

Your comment about JGP and Jr. World spots just as true for Karen and the ladies as Vincent and the men.

I think you missed my point.

Vincent got bumped due to age. I wonder of USFS talked about bumping Karen too because of her age.

Based on Vincent's interviews, it sounded like getting to Jr. Worlds was his goal. He even said he didn't expect to be on the podium.

I think had Jason finished fourth or lower Vincent for sure would have been selected. The new criteria of Worlds selection ultimately was in Jason's favor.

I sadly agree. I think that sending Vincent and Nathan to Worlds was our best shot at regaining 3 spots for the Olympics. I'm a huge Jason Brown fan but he has no consistent quad. He quad isn't reliable at all. Vincent while young and inexperienced has reliable quads and he's got so much room to grow at just 16! There's more competition than ever in the men's field especially at worlds and Jason without a quad or rather a reliable quad will be buried I fear.

It is a vast oversimplification (IMO) to say that Vincent got bumped due to age.

Differences btwn Vincent's situation vs. Karen's:

Vincent won silver at Nats. Karen won gold.
Plus the men have only two World slots. The ladies have three.
If the men had three slots, it is very possible that Vincent would have been the third man.

Vincent's entire senior international experience consists of the SP at Golden Spin. He withdrew from the FS.
Karen has much more senior international experience than Vincent.
Karen has been to four senior GPs; to Four Continents; and to four Challengers. http://www.isuresults.com/bios/isufs_cr_00034366.htm

1. Karen is older than Vincent and has been skating as a senior internationally.

2. Senior ladies tend to peak much earlier in their careers than men. Ladies peak between 16-20, men peak in their early 20s.

So I doubt that there was talk of bumping Karen due to age.

I'm happy Jason gets to go to Worlds, and I think he will do a much better job than he did here at Nationals. Will it be enough for two spots? I'm not sure. I could see Vincent and Jason having similar scores at Worlds....Vincent would get hosed on PCS. Vincent is well-positioned now to potentially take home a JW title or medal.
