VA Tech Shooting...

I don't see one post that suggests elementary school children take guns to school.

But even though I shouldn't EVEN respond I will just to satisfy whatever need is wanting to be met. No, I don't think elementary children should pack guns in their backpack. That would make the school yard more dangerous. Not less.

I personally don't think a child should handle a gun until they are AT LEAST 10 years of age, and even then they better be a very responsible 10 year old. They should be supervised and should take a hunters' safety course.

My brother has just recently begun to go to the rifle range. He's 12 and a half. He took a hunting safety course. He does not have access to any of the firearms in my parents' home. The key is out of reach (and as far as I know Duane does not know the location) so that he cannot get into the gun cabinent.

I would not have a problem having gun laws where you have background checks that go into mental health records, however you can't even get those if you're investigating a person on a crime unless that person is dead AFAIK. So you're not just running into gun rights there, you're running into a host of other problems that people aren't backing down on either.

I agree that you shouldn't be allowed to hunt without a hunter's safety card (much like bow hunters up here can't hunt with a bow without certification), not so much because that proves they're of sound mind and aren't going to shoot someone (because i don't think that would really stop someone from losing it and shooting something lol) but because it's so easy for incompetent gun owners are out there and hunters and animals alike are in danger of being wounded...

I'm sure there are statistics, but I doubt you could find them to be completely accurate... both sides love to skew the numbers to say what they want.
