Virginia and Dc area?

I hope Gsers from that area are alright. Still half a million people without powere in the sweltering heat. death toll few days ago was 24, i'm sure it has climbed. They are saying this is hottest summer on record, or will be. Please everyone, check in on even strangers if you are in a city, apt bldg, dense area. Everyone is trying to save and fixed income folks are getting slammed. I nearly passed out yesterday at 91 degrees and high humidity. We will be in for several days. It is of course the humidity.

I do not know how pwoplw are surviving at 109 degrees. I envy Alaskans, canadians, though everyone is being slammed one way or another by mother nature.

I have cousins in VA but they have been unreachable. I have no cell number for them, nor does my mother.

Pleaase God, help the earth. I've seen veterans on TV passing out coolers of ice...so important to get brain temps down. Any news from Gsers down in the mid east USA? :thumbsup:

Try freezing to death - or nearly so... either way extremes are never good... right now we have someone missing in Seward. It's 50 some degrees, but it's pouring rain and we're going on at least 36 hours of this guy being missing. Hypothermia will be setting in if it hasn't already. You just have to prepare as best you can.

Well, Mike Weiss reported on FB that his area was without power for 73 hours! We have cousins from Reston, VA whom we called/e-mailed. They were in Ohio for two days, visiting friends. It turns out that their friends had no power, and they ended up staying there for two days and then came home to the mess. As of Wednesday 9when we heard from them), their power was back. I have a friend in Baltimore who finally got her power back yesterday. It's really bad, particularly with the really high heat indexes predicted for this weekend on the east coast.

I have an online friend from the DC area and haven't heard a peep out of her for days. I have no way to reach her and can only hope and pray about her. I'm fairly sure that for her and her family it's only a miserable situation, not a life-threatening one, but it's dreadful when it goes on like this. Tomorrow is supposed to be very bad on the East Coast again.

Stay safe, everyone! As skateluvr says, if you can check up on neighbors, do so. Otherwise, just drink enough fluids and try not to overexert. When I have to go out on days like this, I often carry some ice cubes in a cup or jar with me. I hold them to my neck and other pressure points to keep my inner temp. down. Then at the end, I can drink the melted ice. World's cheapest air conditioning.

Live in Central Virginia- one of the hardest hit areas of VA. We were VERY lucky at our house- power out for less than 24 hours. My parents power came back on late Monday; we have friends who just got their power back yesterday. We housed my parents and their freezer contents until their power came back on. We donated a cooler of ice and some cold water to their neighbors. Hosted a cookout for some powerless friends on the fourth- they enjoyed the AC. Crews have been working around the clock, but a few houses remain powerless as of today! US Cellular was offering their store for people to charge cell phones or check e-mail. Several churches and schools in town have been open all week as "cooling stations." One local high school with power hosted a local pet stores' pets since the store had no power and the pups were getting over heated.

I have to wait until after 8:00 each night to walk the dog- don't want his paws to burn! It's still in the lower 90's even then!! The heat just saps your energy- spend any time out there at all and you don't feel like doing anything else the rest of the day.

I heard from my DC area friend. She had no power until Tuesday, nor did her neighbors. Lost everything in her fridge and freezer. Now all she has to do is shop for replacement food and wait until the heat breaks, which should be tomorrow.

Wolfpacker, it's impressive the way all your neighbors pitched in to share the burden, even thinking of the pets and the food in the freezer. It's amazing, isn't it, how seemingly small things like giving people a place to check their e-mail can make one feel as if the world will someday grow normal again.
