Vocal music with lyrics

Todd also used music w/vocals for his SLC FS to music from The Lord of the Rings : The Fellowship of the Ring. Been awhile since I've watched it, but I know one of the pieces of music chosen was from the Mines of Moria/Bridge of Khazad-dum and Dwarvish was sung in it.

I really was wondering if he'd get a deduction, such as Elvis did for using Duel of Fates. Was glad Todd didn't as it's one of my favourite FS' of his and no, not just because it's LOTR. ;)

Keep waiting for someone to use The Return of the King music for a program. Best music out of the Trilogy and there's one piece where this cresendo just crying out for a huge throw triple from a pair or one of the big jumps from one of the guys to be landed on.

Sigh...One of these days I hope!!

The best thing will be to legalize lyrics, so Caroline Zhang can finally use her beautiful "You raise me up" as a competitive program.

I don't think "dead" languages are excused from being used as lyrics. If that were the case, then Hughes wouldn't have run into a problem using Carmina Burana b/c the libretti is in Latin. "1492" is acceptable b/c the lyrics are a background to the musical score and aren't clear enough to be distinguished (although I know they are in Latin). I think it also depends on the sound system and the skating venue as to whether or not vocals are noticeable. Watching the men's SP on TV was the first time I had actually heard clear vocals in Joubert's music (and that piece of music was composed for him, so he really should have known better)

The issue with vocal music that has lyrics (and yes, it is possible to have vocal music w/o lyrics) is that, by not using lyrical music, it makes the skater have to interpret the music rather than simply acting out w/e the vocalist is singing and having "skating for the deaf." It's easier to allow lyrics in ice dance b/c the dancers have to reflect the rhythmic beat running through the music (and the music has to have a running beat---IIRC, D/V ran into this problem at '06 Euros)

When I was doing choreography for modern dance, my teacher wouldn't let me use music with lyrics for the same reason (ironically, I ended up using Nino Rota's "R&J"--probably one of the most overused pieces of FS music ever, but hey, it was on the floor and not the ice:laugh:)

Like Mafke wrote, I think the loophole is that vocals are allowed if voice is used as a musical instrument, ie not to actually say words. I think commentators at Skate Canada last year were wondering whether Fumie's music would warrant a deduction -- I suppose there is some fuzziness in the definition.

Kypma

I thought they did give Fumie a deduction for having vocals at SC and then they went back and changed the edit of her music to one that was less questionable. I might be making that up; somebody check me on that
