Want to Buy an Ice Rink?

I have always dreamed of having a backyard ice skating rink, if I ever moved to a cold part of the country. Instead, I have a backyard swimming pool, which makes sense in this part of Arizona. It is nice to know that it is possible to have an ice skating rink after just 2-3 days of freezing temperatures, for a very affordable price of $699 (I used to think it would cost thousands). If I ever move to Northern Arizona or a cold part of the country, I will certainly look into this.
Thanks for the link.

My brother-in-law built a rink in his backyard. Last year, his rink won second place in the "Top Ten Backyard Rinks In North America". I think the only thing that the winning rink had that his didn't, was a scoreboard. He even has an old Zamboni. The boards and flood lights were donated from an old rink that was replacing theirs. All the kids in town are allowed to come any time to play hockey for free.

Forgive my ignorance, but when you live in places like Wisconsin, doesn't your swimming pool automatically just morph into an ice rink every December anyway?

A swimming pool!!! lucky you. I have always dreamed of having my own swimming pool. Our summers are too short here to really benefit - unless of course, it could be indoor. That would be awesome!!

I live in a rural area with a creek right next to my house, but it isn't a very good or safe place to skate IF it gets cold enough, long enough for it to freeze. I, do, however, have enough room in my yard to put 3 or 4 of those rinks...except the only flat spot is my husbands garden area.

I'm not too sure, but I think only the top layer freezes. The bottom of the pool will remain water, so if you were to put a heavy weight on the surface, you could CRASH into the water below. Even in places where there's permafrost, this occurs. Not a very safe thing to do!

Don't people drain their pools?
*shrugs*
I had a backyard rink once. It was when I had just started skating. Your blades get really dull on it, and it didn't come out even. But I still begged my dad to build another one when I got older, because I could practice every day.

I loved mine! My mom could not get me off it at night to go to bed. In fact, I probably would have worn my skates to bed.

Oh, for the good old days.......

You're not ignorant at all! Forgive my own ignorance, but wouldn't the pool have to be drained of chlorine, leaves, etc., and then refilled so that it could freeze over? On the other hand, maybe the ice would damage the outdoor pool's foundation and sides.

One up side, however -- if you did fall through the ice in your outdoor swimming pool, your chances to get out would be quite high! :agree:
