Was 2024 GPF evidence we are in the "jumping" era?

I wouldn't say the GPF 2024 was evidence on its own that we are in a jumping era. The men have been increasing hte number of quads for a while including back when Nathan Chen ruled. And to be frank, the ladies even with Amber Glenn and ladies trying the 3A they do not compare to just a few years ago when Trusova, Scherbakova, Valieva et al did multiple quads. We look like we regressed. Kaori probably with a clean skate could not compete with them. Remember Trusova only won OSM with like 5 quads.

But it was how the GP final was won, with 9/10 cheated jump elements . There were fundamental problems on 9/10 jump elements. But it proves the power of figure jumping, on a bad day he easily wins. I have been saying for a while Ilia is the best of all time, but the GP final performance becomes a trend I'll revise it. It seems he's choosing money from shows over maintaining peak form and improving. I don't blame him for earning money it's essentially an amateur sport due to ISU mismanagement. He's a smart guy he'll know how to prepare properly for the Olympic season.

They are still doing quads, just these girls can't participate in these ISU competitions. And even if they can participate later in the year, only one of them will be allowed from this enormous figure skating nation, will have to book the spot 6 months in advance hope there are no injuries, no illness, no-one has ever skated under such psychologically and physically demanding stipulations (maybe the greatest Olympic achievement in figure skating if this feat can be pulled off). Petrosian has surpassed Trusova and Shcherbakova, although not at Valieva's level yet. Don't forget the age limit was increased 14 to 16 in Russia domestic competition.

Glenn is proof this is the jumping era. She trained the 3A at the expense of everything else for several years and now with a single jump is consistently winning every competition she enters.

To tell the truth this whole discussion is a big gripy yawn to me. Never mind Ilia Malilin, Nathan Chen or Alexandra Trusova. Never mind the Grand Prix Final. All we need to do is look at the ISU Scales of Values. Ten points for a quad this, eleven points for a quad that, twelve points of a quad whatsit. With minor modifications it has been like this for years. Why the sudden panic and angst now?

I believe the thing causing the consternation is all the q’s Malinin got. On all his quads. Q is not < but it’s like it brings to mind is Malinin not quadgod but getting quadgod points? Big question

I still don't get it .Is this thread about the question, is Malinin the quadgod or not? Is it about the question of whether he deliberately performed poorly in this event because his eyes are on making money in shows instead of on improving his skating? Is it about his maternal legacy (his mom Tatiana Malinina, representing Uzbekistan in the 1990s, was known for having secure jumps but not so strong on the second mark)?

Is it yet another thread about how bad the ISU judges are?

None of these, in my humble opinion, bear on the question of the thread, which is, did anything happen at the 2024 GP Final that makes us think that there is some kind of "new era" dawning in figure skating.

My opinion is, quite the contrary. grumble grumble grumble big jumpers have a point advantage in the IJS scoring system. Yes they do. Same old same old.

In this particular performance (LP) Malinin prepared an astounding flurry of jumps, worth about 93.5 base value points, The quality was not what we hoped for, as was reflected in the judging to the tune of minus 11.13 GOE points, for qs , etc. He lost 6.7 points off base value for three under rotations (plus an extra point for a fall). His PCSs were somewhat lower than he got at 2024 worlds for. clean program (third to Kagiyama and Adam SHF at worlds, second to Kagiyama here).

All of this reduced his score in the LP by 20 points, and he finished second in the segment. Well, that's figure skating, That's sports. Sometimes you're on fire, sometimes you struggle to perform up to expectations and hopes.
