After a disappointing run at the 2007 U.S. Figure Skating Championships last January in Spokane, Wash., three-time ... [More]

I love these pre-Nationals articles - they really add to the excitement!!! thanks.

I was glad to see that neither Evan or Johnny took the bait about ramping up the rivalry issue. Good for them to concentrate on their own plans and training and never mind what others are doing.

Should be a very exciting but oh, so nerve-wracking competition!

Thanks for the link. Johnny said he is going to do a Quad Toe. I had a feeling he was going to try a quad at Nationals. Good for him.

I'm very impressed with Johnny's answers after listening to his teleconference. He sounds focused and very serious about his training.

I also just listened to the whole thing and - good luck, Johnny! You're more than capable.:agree:

Yeah, he's usually very negative about it. Saying things along the lines of, "you'll have to see," or "I'll have to see how it is in practice," or "I'll put it in when it's ready." I can't recall any time he's said that he will unequivocally put it in and then hasn't, but I've only been a fan since 06', it's possible he did that prior the that season.

I understand his ambivalence and slight attitude at times regarding the quad. It's got to the point where it's dominating mens skating at the expense of artistry and with him being primary an artistic skater obviously he'll disagree with that.

I'll be happy for him if he lands a clean quad at nationals, but OTOH I hate that jump regardless of who lands it.

Johnny's going to go for a quad in LP at Nationals! It really adds the excitement to the rivalry.

The quad itself won't help too much if the rest of the program was not good enough. He had quad at 2006 Worlds and 2007 Nationals, but his score was not high in both accassions. (Even though they were two footed, he still landed them.)

The difference this year is that he practices the quad WITH complete run through everyday. He will know what to think and do next with or without a clean quad. This kind of training will pay off at the competitions. That is the part, I think, will make big difference from any other quad he put in to the programs before.

Wish Johnny good luck!

I of course wish him good luck as well. Much like I did this year. But talk is cheap. I mean, it's good to hear that he feels ready and all, that he's done his training and feels like he can tackle the challenge. However, I won't get all giddy and excited till I actually see his SP + LP.

The ice is slippery ;-)

Well, although not in this article, Weir did that very recently (IFS article by Kathleen Bangs) and did it without baiting.

Yes, and it's slippery for everyone. No reason for this negativity.

Good to hear about his quad. And he definitely seems to have his target in sight.
And the thing about him feeling like a young kid going into his first Nationals? That's exactly what I hoped to hear.
A new exhibition program to Ave Maria is very surprising. But I'm looking forward to seeing it.

I don't think so. I think he explained himself and there's nothing wrong with that.

Did anyone ever think that if Johnny actually landed a quad in competition with his lyrical style, that a majority of judges would consider it enough to give him gold? Would there now be enough points if the routine is flawless along with many other top men he will meet in Worlds?

While I would consider Johnny with the quad landed, a contender for gold, I still think there are others I would also consider contenders for gold.

At the Nationals, I would say, "Yes." At the Worlds, "No". I think if Johnny skates like he did at the Cup of China this season, plus a clean quad in LP, he will win the gold at this Nationals. He will be a contender for a medal at the World if he has a quad. JMO.
