"Showing that 'white men can't jump'" :rollin: :rollin: :rollin:

BTW, Engrskater didn't make the crack about Surya being a fake. Engrskater was quoting an earlier poster and defending Surya as being a unique talent with her own style.

"but i do tend to feel the hate of surya inhere! and i don't think that fare!.."

I don't.

Personally, Surya was always one of my favorites. I've never seen 93 worlds, but I don't think that she deserved to win either 94 or 95. That doesn't mean that I hate her. I've always enjoyed her skating, I just can see her faults as well as her strenghts, and personally I thought that Yuka and Lulu were better skaters. That's not hate, that's preference, no different from choosing a wife/husband or even a puppy from a litter. All perfectly fair.

Calling her a fake may have been a little over the top, but that was just one person. Besides, team Surya has admitted to making stuff up, so in that context, she was a "fake". <img src=http://www.ezboard.com/intl/aenglish/images/emoticons/embarassed.gif ALT=":o">

Re: What was the controversy in the 94' Worlds

IIRC, at that medal ceremony, Surya didn't come out when her name was first announced. From the camera's view, it was obvious her mother was holding her back and orchestrating a big scene. I think she had to be coaxed up onto the podium (she refused at first) and then she took the medal off immediately after it was put around her neck. Very, very obnoxious behavior, but again, it was fairly obvious that Mommy was orchestrating this little drama--I think the commentators even commented to that effect.

She actually was much better in 94 than at the Olympics in 92. I was incredulous back then as to how she jumped. She'd come darn near to a dead STOP and then jump, which is a really hard to do when you're trying a triple!! By 94 she had some flow into the jumps and they looked better. Her artistry, however, always was lacking.

I will also note, though, that she really looks much better in person than on TV and you can really get caught up in her skating live. She's so energetic that the flaws don't seem as obvious, if that makes sense. She's not a favorite of mine, but I do enjoy seeing her at COI.

Re: What was the controversy in the 94' Worlds

I have the tape of 94' world's and neither Sato or Bonaly's programs were outstanding all things being considered.
Sato completed 6 triples with so very tight landings.
Bonaly attempted 7 triples with a hand down on the loop, also she had a cheated 3F/3T that back then they really did deduct for and now choose to ignore with certain skaters.

I think it could've gone either way really. Yuka got to win in her home country and i think some of the judges prefered Yuka's soft and pristeen style to Surya's hard edge style which I did find refreshing. I think Surya stayed true to how she wants to skate and I admire it but I think it was at the detrement of maybe getting more of the respect from the judges that she deserved. She is definitely by far the gutsiest female skater when it came to jumping.
