Why Yukari Nakano had the best SP

I just caught up and watched most of the ladies SPs from today. And I have to say, I was BLOWN AWAY by Yukari. She was fantastic, a breath of fresh air.

First of all, with Caroline Zhang not here, she is by far the best spinner in the competition. All of her positions are complete and well stretched, plus she maintains centering and speed better than anyone! It amazes me how fast she can spin - IMO she and Zhang are the most comparable to Lucinda Ruh out of the current pack of women skaters. So frankly, all of her spins deserve +3 GOE. I'm surprised she doesn't get more cred as a world class spinner.

Second of all, she deserves the best marks for PCS with Carolina Kostner. What I love about Yukari's choreography is that it's not contrived, she doesn't do it just for points, it's not all about playing the CoP game. The movements actually match the music beautifully. Compare her straight-line footwork in her SP to Mao Asada and you see the immense difference. Yukari's starts and stops, speeding ups and slowing downs actually go hand in hand with the music. Whereas Mao's straight-line is too busy, it drags on, it's kind of frustrating and silly because it's clearly all about CoP. It's like, "Come on Mao, get on with it already and stop zig-zagging!"

Additionally, she has terrific speed around the ice, great basic skating skills, and actually emotes through her face more than Asada or Kostner.

Even with lack of 3-3, I think Nakano shined as the best and deserved the highest PCS of the bunch.

I also want to mention it's been amazing to see her blossom over the past few seasons. She has improved all aspects of her skating so! Remember in '04-'05 she was 11th in both of her GP assignments.

I hope she can land her 3A in the FS.

Didn't she land it all season? I think she did. It's not as pretty as Mao's (when Mao is on) but it is way more consistent. Important for Nakano is that she fully rotates and lands all the other jumps, she will never get high GOE for them and therefore has to be secure on all of them (and rotate them - the solo jump today looked awfully close to underrotation).

But I agree with everything you said about her spins, her artistry and musicality. She was really on today and that straightline step was absolutely sensational.

I will agree that she did have a good program. Her leg wrap is very distracting and really ruins her skating for me. As talented as she is, it's a shame that her jumping technique wasn't addressed to fix the leg wrap. I do feel she would be contending for top Japanese skater otherwise.

I think she has been pretty consistent with the 3A. I know she got it for sure at the GPF.

For me, I'm so used to the wrap that I don't care anymore. I never found it distracting or aesthetically unnattractive, just different. But I know that she will always get negative GOE on her flip and lutz from the judges and has to fight through that. But what I find pleasant is that her jumps are so consistent, and you never see her completely bomb a program. At most she makes two major jumping mistakes in an LP, usually just one.

You are right, that's really great - there is no "how often will she fall" or "will she pop this or that" again. What I also enjoy is the fact that she is a woman, 22, isn't it? With all those young teenagers (also Mao and Kim) I always ask myself: how long will they be able to land the jumps etc. Nakano also has this calm, musical and very mature style. I love it.

For me too. That´s why I think she was very very overscored.

Well, I didn't see a leg wrap during that amazing step sequence, that seemed so natural, effortless - no movement was forced, it was sharp and at the same time very smooth and musical. I also didn't see a wrap while she was doing her spins.

I understand that it disturbs the overall performance, but what do you want to do? Don't count her jumps? Ignore everything beautiful, her skating style etc. and mark her down severely because of an alternative technique that isn't forbidden anywhere? What score exactly should be lower?

I love Yukari, and I'm thrilled she did so well in the SP today, but I think she was awfully lucky not to have the solo triple down-graded. It looked under-rotated in slow- mo.

With the 3 Axel being consistent all season Nakano has what it takes to compete on a technical level with Mao the real difference will come down to PC scores in which Asada will most likely score above Nakano. I hope the best for Nakano as she is on of my favorites. Her spins are tight, have good centering and positions. However I like Zhang's and Xu's positions better in the spins.

Who cares about her wrap the leg wrap is just nit picking it's major issues like edge changes on jumps and underrotations that should be the concern of the judges not a leg wrap. The only thing a leg wrap does is probably increase the chance on not completing a rotation but if she can complete it anyway then I see no reason why the wrap should effect her score.

YN and CZ mentioned in the same breath cracks me up, and not because I disagree that they both have great spins. I remember watching Caroline's SP at the GPF (the Japanese broadcast on YouTube), and after she was done, they cut to a shot of Yukari (who was up next) eyeing Caroline with the most venomous, vitriolic stare I've ever seen a skater give another. I was kind of surprised by it, and double-checked to be sure, and she was indeed looking at Caroline. I'm guessing CZ must be real toxic on practice ice to warrant that kind of look from Yukari.

But anyway, I digress. Yukari was lovely yesterday, and most certainly had the best spins out of all the top ladies. Even with the hideous leg wrap, she was tops in my book (along with Carolina).

^^What does 'toxic' mean?

The Collins English Dictionary and Thesaurus defines it as "poisonous".

Suddenly, I have this mental image of little Caroline lacing her blades with poison and infecting the ice, turning it vaguely green or something. All the girls are affected, thus explaining Yukari's bitchy staredown.

I'm so pleased Yukari is in 3rd right now! I'm really hoping she can medal here. She has a consistant 3Axel this season and I think she's going for the 3 loop- 3 loop too.

Good luck Yukari!!!!
