Withdrawals US Nationals

I have seen only one pair team withdraw from Nationals at this time - which, with the number of skaters attending - that is pretty unusual. I hope no one has to withdraw, but does anyone know of a skater or team that has and it has not been posted? When is the deadline. It seems last year that the replacements had less than a week to confirm and attend.

If only there was a thread where you could name that team for all to see. 😀

Whoa are you making fun of me? I am stating that this time last year - we already saw a ton of withdrawals and replacements. Yep Cooke and Kennedy? Pairs team has withdrawn - no replacement named.

No one else qualified.

With Cooke/ Kennedy's withdrawal, there are only 10 Pairs teams competing, the lowest number at U.S. Nats in several years. Canada only has 7 pairs teams competing at Cdn Nats.

IMO, the sport does not do enough to develop the pairs discipline, not even for the decreased number of teams the sport apparently desires there to be. I say that based on the sport once cutting 28 pairs entries at Worlds to only 16 moving to the free skate. That sends the message to not even try. Accordingly, there were fewer pairs entries at Worlds over subsequent years. Pairs is the hardest discipline and it deserves better attention, development, nurturing, etc.

I agree that the pairs discipline deserves more attention in the USA Canada and the rest of the world. If you check the pair results from last year at US nationals, a few teams split up and those skaters don't have new partners yet ( at least not publically announced,) With Starr Andrews transitioning to pairs I think we'll see an increase in the number of pairs for Nationals 2027.

For sure, there are a number of reasons for the current decreased pairs numbers at Nationals in the U.S. and Canada, including injuries and splits.

Pairs definitely is the hardest discipline. It was made even more difficult by the requirement of individual jumps (& pairs teams not only being able to successfully handle those jumps but needing them to be perfectly synchronized *and* not too far apart!) What's the purpose of that extra jumping pass in the LP? Pairs started out as (& was known for) "two skating as one" but it doesn't seem like that matters now.

Would like to see something like a choreographic jump element to replace the current jump combo in the free. 3-5 jump sequence, no jumps harder than 2-lutz, the point of the element being how well the two skaters can synchronize and produce a beautiful element, well coordinated to the music, exhibiting "two skating as one"

Sorry for the off-topic. I'm sad for Ava and Camden, but happy for Alina and Ken to get this opportunity

Good to see no equipment issues this year, but I do think Liu, Glenn, Levito could all withdraw from the women and Malinin (obviously) and Brown and they will still go to the Olympics.

Sad to see so few entrants in pairs, but this is a discipline that might be all but dead by the 2034 Olympics (or even 2030 Olympics). The removal of it from the 2028 Youth Olympics is a glimpse into the future.
