PALS and PASS are acronyms used in Canada for provincial services for children and young adults with severe autism, who can't cope in regular schools even with an individual aide. My cousin has a son who graduated from PALS (the common name for the K-12 school) in Nova Scotia and now lives in a group home there run by the provincial social services department. Not the meaning you were thinking of, I guess, but "pals" as a term for friends isn't used much in Canada, and I automatically think of the acronym for the school. The BC school is in Richmond, and I was there several times during COVID when it was closed as a school and used as one of the vaccination centres.
