(Among the First Nations, blankets were an important part of their culture, handwoven ones to wear, waterproofed ones to cover tepee frames, patterned ones for ceremonial gifts, and button-decorated ones for dances. I have a child-size button blanket given to me by the mother of a Haida friend I danced with in a July 1 concert long ago, me in my Highland dance outfit and my friend in her blanket with bells on her moccasins.
