In music, it's what they call TEMPO An artist of any type (instrument, Vocal, Dance) must follow the tempo when interpeting the music. Can you imagine Giselle dancing upbeat to the Mad Scene?

I'm not sure what Schubert intended in that music, the lyrics of Ave Maria came later on.

The music was actually part of a song cycle "Fräulein am See", specifically to the song "Ellens dritter Gesang". This song starts with the words Ave Maria but has apart from that a completely different text. Then someone had the idea to sing the Latin "Ave Maria" to Schubert's music - et voilà, one of the most famous songs was born. But that was never Schubert's intention.

Joe, about Brezina, do you think that the height on his jumps could turn out to be a problem for him at some time? I remember Yagudin saying once that jumping too high is not that good because you are more likely to loose control.

May I answer your question?

I think that a quality of jumping technique is the main thing which is deciding whether any jump will be great or bad. Michal has a very good jumping technique (because his coach Mr. Petr Starec is the coach in Czech Republic) so don’t worry about the control of his body in the air.

By the way I think it is better to perform huge jumps instead of low jumps where anybody couldn’t be sure whether the jump was fully rotated.

Michal's jumping technique is similar to Brian Boitano's one.

I believe jumping is a genetic thing. In the Sportsworld some athletes are better at Broad Jumping (distance) than High Jumping (over the barre). Of course, there are those special Athletes that can do both and add in Hurdles for a race.
In figure skating as in Dance, genetics play a big role in the spring one gets as he/she leaps into the air. So the natural gift is the height one can possibly attain. However, one can always gain an etra 10 percent of height by serious practicing. A person can lift weights and improve the look of his/her body but it will never get to the development as in Arnold Schwarzenegger because Arnold has the genes for it.

I don't agree with Yagudin but I am not totally convinced that if one works seriously practicing jumps, he will attain his natural maximum height. Serious practice should bring control. It was once said that boys should not practice extensions the way girls do because it ruins their jumping abilities.. I don;t think that has been proven.

Meanwhile Brezina is the new man with Star Quality.
