Yuna Kim

Yuna's FS WR is finally broken...at least it was only by 0.04. Not saying I agree with Evgenia's score though. However, on the bright side, she still holds the WR for the total. And she also has the best record ever: never finishing off the podium even once in her career. And that's a WR that merely scores cannot prove. Yuna's overall skating style and quality proves that it is deserved.

I kinda saw that coming if Evgenia skated lights out and she did. Can't say I agree with it but there has been inflation especially towards the Russians and Gracie Gold since the Olympic season. It's actually nothing new. Yuna's skating will always be the standard in quality. Still the Queen and forever will be. Excited for the future of these ladies tho. I hope they stay longer than one season.

There's no denying that the world record was gonna be broken sometime soon, but I just hoped that it would've stayed longer... 😅

Me too. The shock would have been if the record lasted till next year's Worlds. Looking back on those older videos when Yuna became the first one to break the 200 mark everyone was amazed and ecstatic with her breaking through that barrier. Now, 200 is only a guaranty for a top ten placement. I have no problem with Evgenia's score but the numbers have lost some of their value since those earlier "firsts" by Yuna.

This video popped up on my fb newsfeed recently. She's throwing the first pitch. She seems a little awkward, but I think that just makes her all the more adorable. She looks good... very pretty with long hair!

Damn you, David Wilson. Now I can't help but notice the non-smiles on her face. I am a fan Angelina Jolie as well and whenever you see her in public where ever she is she is always smiling as if to say, I'm on top of all of this, I'm a big star celebrity and I DON'T resent that. However one thing I noticed was that everyone in the video and not just Yuna were also not smiling. It must be an Asian thing.

I totally agree. Not to be a rain on these ladies' parade but sometimes when the scores come up and you see that they're so inflated, it kind takes away the excitement and meaning in those numbers. Especially when you see the big difference between the scoring before and how the skaters had to earn those PCS with seasons of practice and competing, against the scoring now and how debuting skaters just magically get high PCS marks on par with legends like Yuna Kim and Mao Asada, or a great skater like Carolina Kostner with topnotch skating skills. Those numbers become meaningless. The only saving grace about figure skating nowadays, for me, is that in this year's Worlds the top ladies are all magnificent and clean.

I agree with you so much. These numbers have no meaning today, especially the scores of the components. I can repeat it a hundred times but when a 16-year-old gets higher PCS than the likes of Mao, Yuna or Carolina, then the system is incorrigibly broken.
This is why I wasn't mad when I saw Med's scores. I have been waiting for this especially since the score of her GPF.

I guess the combined total record will be very hard to break because skaters not only need two perfect programs but with the highest possible techniqual quality with very good PCS as well. Plus it needed to be at a big international competition (Worlds or Olympics). And not many are capable of doing two such programs.

Medvedeva's Program is good But her program is not better than Yuna's 150.06

Yuna's 150.06 and Evgenia's 150.10 really can't be comparable. Different era, different judging, and different rules. Yuna gets an e for her slight inside edge flip in 2009 SP & LP, but Evgenia's obvious Flutz is not called for some reason. Looks like judges are more lenient than before.

Well I hoped the WR would be broken with a program that brought me as much joy and emotion as Gershwin. To even general audiences this skate was memorable. On the other hand showing Evgenia's skate to passive fans leaves them impressed, but they always ask about her weird arm placement and comment on the determination on her face to land the jump, not the ease.

I've said this again and again but Evgenia played a great numbers game. A small firecracker who backloaded jumps, added a ton of tanos and landed all her jumps. I am really impressed with her but the skate itself is not iconic. Not to discount her achievement, but the performances are not comparable. I hope that puberty (or beauty spurt) will be kind to her as well.

Some people are having rumblings about Yuna possibly making a comeback to get 3 spots for South Korea but I am very against her coming back if it is because of pressures to get berths.

As much as I miss Yuna, sometimes I'm glad that she isn't competing now and can enjoy her life, sipping juice, with her shiny Olympic medals. I still remember Worlds 2013 when she was lowballed in SP. When she makes mistakes, she's almost always harshly dinged for them. But look at what's happening now. Obvious wrong edges don't get called because certain skaters are favored.

who cares about that WR anymore? after what happened in sochi, they can break that WR every competition and i don't care anymore.

I don't think it'll happen.

But I'm gonna have such mixed feelings if it does. I can see Yuna one last time...maybe she can even win worlds again...but she doesn't even like skating anymore (and i don't blame her for that). It would only be because of pressure that she would return.

Also (and I hate to say this) but would she even be able to get top 2? She would pretty much need to be perfect given how much higher other people's TES and PCS are rising >___<

I am sure she will never return to competitive skating. She helped Korea to get 3 spots for the Sochi Olympics, now it is the federation's responsibility to provide the ideal conditions (rinks, coaches, choreographers, others) for their skaters and therefore to secure the most possible spots for the country.
Yuna - besides her other personal commitments - tries to help the younger skaters but it is not her responsibility now to get those spots. She has done more than enough for her country

Agreed. As a fan, I'd only wish her to perform an EX program at Pyeongchang Olympics. :) Besides, the future of Korean skaters seem brighter now. Who knows if the next wonderskater is one of them. I just wish they'd have the support they need to develop.

In other news, this TVC of Yuna has reached 2.5M views already. ;)

Does anyone have any interviews or info on whether or not Yuna hates skating (and why?)
I don't blame her because I know she's in a lot of pain from skating-related injuries
And it must not be fun living with the expectation of always being perfect or you disappoint everyone.

I hope - and I think! - she will skate an exhibition piece at the Closing or Opening Ceremony or at the figure skating gala event. :)

Although I don't know too much about the current state of Korean figure skating, it is sure that Yuna has had an incredible effect on the FS of her country. I was at Junior Worlds a couple of weeks ago and I was super surprised how the young Korean skaters have a similar style to Yuna's. Expressive skating, beautiful arm movements, stunning running edges after jumps - just three examples what remind me of Yuna's skating. Her effect is undeniable and very visible!

There are many very promising young skaters in Korea and I also wish they will have the support to develop. :agree: And I am sure Yuna will help as much as she can do, too, but I really hope no one will pressure her to do things she doesn't want to do. ;)

Ironically at Worlds TAT said the korean federation is moving their skaters to Russia working with russian coaches and choreographer, but i don't know who she was referring:

I know Rebeka Kim and Kiril Minov are training in Moscow.

when she went through some difficulties, she just said casually she didn't like to do that. She had to practice under poor conditions in korea, so she always had to face some injuries. She really liked to skate though. It is not a big deal at all. I don't know why we are even discussing in here.
