Yuna Adios Nonino Analysis

Interpretation

For Tango type of program, It is usually quite difficult in terms of music interpretation. This free skate is especially difficult.
Because tango itself demands that fast and slow tempo interweaving and change effect. Lots of essence can only be interpreted through respect of such feature of Tango. Therefore, the head, hand, leg dance details must falls on precise/exact musical timing. Only this way, can interpret Tango’s stytle and flavor. In this program, many musical matching timing moments are designed, especially demanding in stsq, a slight miss in one part will affect the interpretation as a whole, there is absolutely no way to salvage. Meanwhile, the numerous perviously mentioned movements that needs rapid completion and sudden stops are not easy to control as well.

However, under such demanding interpretation requirement (and hostile atmosphere at the time), Yuna still managed to interpret this program very well and to its entirety, Indeed admirable. Almost all dance details matched the desired musical timing with control. Not rushed, not delayed, not sloppy. On top of that, Yuna’s interpretation of the crucial feature of tango--slow, fast tempo contrast is really masterful and impeccable. Many move that needs instant completion, such as the Counter in transition, Chasse in stsq, all performed sharp and neat. While as, some moves that deliberately express tempo contrast, slow tempo move that need sufficient patience, such as the opening dance spin, some Cross Foot too-foot skating etc. All presented exactly as needed no more no less. Besides, some memorable dance details, for example that gentle touch after turn around (after stsq), not only matched musical tempo, but also enhanced the emotion deliverance.

Adios Nonino, is a a song for the remembrance of late father, however this music also has heavy improvised flavor to it and contains various emotions (Astor Piazzolla’s tango music is “nuevo tango” as well known, it is influenced by Jazz and classical music including Bach, features like improvising, counter point etc. is commonly used in his work)Therefore, when interprets(and appreciates), the emotional arch is more of a “recall old memories at familiar sights” type of emotion. Artistic intention is to express the subtle/transient strike/tuck of one’s heart string. As mentioned before, choreography intended to explore the diverse, subtle aspects of personal emotion. Some part is subdued and some part is slightly warm, even has some playful moments.(I really appreciate frenchrabbit’s opinion about Yuna’s Adios Noinon’s artistic purpose, it is really not just a one dimensional sad elegy to late father as many would think. It is very complex, a mixed feeling while remembering, the final version of Adios Nonino is adapted from a tango Aster Piazzolla wrote for his father years ago when he is young and in France, the upbeat theme A part is mainly about that, he adapted that piece, when he is composing Adios Nonino, the legend is that, he write the whole song in his kitchen alone, I can only imagine the complexity of emotion floating cross his mind and coming out of his music…
However, all these emotional change and complexity, if cannot be expressed with a great sense of layered arrangement and natural transition, it can easily leads to messy, incoherent interpretation.

the success of Yuna’s interpretation relies on she truly resonated with the music, especially many emotion inducing details, such as the previously mentioned, touch after turn around. It makes people feel a deep sense of remembrance and longing, not just stopped at the level of dance a beautiful tango. Because she truly felt it, it is easier and natural for her to comb through the emotional complexity and emotional transition, (as we say, not felt like rehearsed but truly felt it). Within any one particular emotion, Yuna always give a coherent interpretation, leave a clear image/impression, meanwhile, has gradual transition.
At the moment of emotional change, with the assistance of tech element segmentation, her emotional change is also alway very clear, for example. The emotional change after first CCoSp, after 3S stop, these are great artistic clue for audience to better grasp the narrative of emotional up and downs, and feel all the subtle emotional changing moments, which will lead to a much deeper feeling and resonance from the spectators as if they have experienced the emotional journey themselves.
From all these aspects, Yuna’s interpretation is really excellent , deserved to be watched/appreciated over and over again.
(this part is also quite difficult for me to translate, I hope I get it right, nevertheless, a general sentiment about Yuna's adios nonino is that when you watch it for the first time, you may notice certain aspect, however when you rewatch it, you will alway unexpectedly discover something new. That is why, many people think adios nonino is a mysterious program, attracted them to watch over and over again)

Okay, I am done with translation, I did it:yahoo:. the last part he give out his scores, it is protocol in english, so no need to translate.

Dont know what direction ISU wanna encourage lady's skating to develop towards in the future.

But, there is alway so much to learn from Yuna Queen's skating. All aspects, great skating is great skating.

Thank you yyyskate for all your hard work! I'm going to save it to my "Yu-Na" files! :)

FrenchRabbit's comments are so interesting and insightful--truly a treasure trove of value that helps our understanding and appreciation of Yu-Na's Olympic FS even more.

There's a little reference to Yu-Na's Sochi skates in this recent interview with Elena Radionova:

http://fs-gossips.com/elena-radionova-we-deservedly-won-the-best-team-prize-at-wtt/

Question: What are your brightest memories of the Sochi Olympics?
Elena: I remember the performances of Mao Asada, Carolina Kostner and Yuna Kim.

...a bit of shade at the skater whose performances weren't mentioned? Elena's mentioned Yu-Na as an inspiration for quite a few years. Unfortunately, she was not age eligible to go to the 2014 Olympics.

It's not the first time Elena did that , right after Sochi she said she would have never imagined Adelina would win the Olympics... She is subtle, but classily throwing shade at the same time!

Random insignifigant moment, but I was watching the Vancouver medal ceremony and I just found the way Yuna stepped onto the podium from the front really funny. She was like, "Hey, I'm the champ now and I don't need no darn steps!" *bam* up on top.

Does she pay Misha to do choreography for young Korean skaters? It would be difficult if Korean fed doesn't do anything and put all burdens on her.

Nah, there are always some choreographers coming to Korea to choreograph for bunch of Koreans. Just less relevant I guess lol I don't think she pays to all of them

Then that's good. She is rich for sure but she can't pay for them when the fed does nothing.

Yuna's not stupid (to sponsor KSU) and doesn't waste money (because honestly she would got top-class choreographers if anything) :cool14:

Agree. KSU should do something for their own skaters, they can't rely on her. But one good thing, Misha Ge is talented as a choreographer and he is still new so his price isn't high yet. Win-win for all of them.

Misha's weibo post regarding the same stuff (working with team korea)
"首次与韩国队合作,我为他们做编排并教滑行步伐表演等,合作很愉快,相信她们会在金妍儿带领下,会在国际大赛和平昌冬奥会取得好成绩"
there is subtle Chinese wording may tell some info.
he says this is his first time working with team korea, he worked with them on choreo, skating skills, stsq and performance etc. the experience is very pleasant, he believes under the lead of Yuna Kim, Team Korea will get good results in international competition and PC OG.
it sounds like Yuna now is the lead coach of Team Korea or something like it. apparently, Yuna is not. but it may indicate, Yuna is really heavily involved in the training of Korean skaters.
Yuna always keep a very low profile publicly, literally only show-up when it is a duty or a job. and Yuna fans really miss her very much.

"The ladies' figure skating singles final was the hottest ticket for next year's Winter Olympics to be held in South Korea, organizers said". Yuna's impact :sad4:

I was able to snag 1 Gala ticket :) I hope Yuna will skate there (pls lord have mercy) . :)))
