I think this was actually what happened at NHK and the Nagano Olympic rink.

I never knew this is possible. I thought all rinks are standard size, at least those which are designated as ISU competition venues, like tennis or football (soccer for Americans).

It's because in North America a lot of rinks are NHL sized, they play on slightly smaller ice. The Boston Bruins play at the TD Garden I believe.
