Yeah, it could be that too. I think it might be Japanese old view on the whole "wife" thing. And while it's not true, I think a lot of people still use that joke. Again, I may be wrong but I'm sure Yuzu said it as a joke to say how close he is to Keiji and how he can handle Yuzu's machine-gun's talk.

They're the cutest for sure. Yuzu seemed unbelievably happy competing together with Keiji and Ryuju, especially his expression towards Keiji's success is very touching. (and seeing him so happy and fulfilled with success and friendship after what he'd gone through - he was kissed by his God here). My heart ponders when I see this appreciation of interpersonal relationship in sports, it's not just a competition for them, these guys are pretty deep people. It's amazing what kind of relationship Team Japan guys have in general.
The wife joke tho  yeah old wife stereotype makes sense. Amusing and Keiji wasn't upset at all, lol.

Team Japan has such wonderful relationship both the men and the ladies. Amazing sportsmanship. They respect, support and push each other.
I love how happy Yuzu is here in NHK. And how he was asked to join in when Keiji and Ryuju were being interviewed at Akko's room coz he just won't stay put watching the interview haha. He's just one big hyper excited kid during the whole NHK competition. I also love how close Yuzu is still with Nobu as you can tell from his reactions being interviewed by Nobu .

On another topic, and it has probably mentioned before. Yuzu did successfully land 4Lo-3T combination in the gala practice. (And I'm off lurking again )

Hmm watching NBC right now and Tara annoyed me a bit throughout Keiji's free. But Yuzuru is up next on NBC.
NBC is also airing this really cheesy ad encouraging people to skate. It's like some high school drama :slink:

And NBC did not show that interview. Lucky we got that on CBC then. Between the 2 networks we got both competiti8n programs and an interview so that is alright for now, lol.

I myself didn't get the wife part right so I asked Japanese people to clarify. They told me it seems he was referring to a pitcher (husband) and catcher (wife) thing in baseball when he said "wife role". Because the term he used for "wife" is kinda outdated but is used in baseball up to now. It may be wrong though. Or my wishful thinking too, lol, cause I don't like this "good wife is a person who nodds at everything you say silently" stereotype, hoping Yuzu's above that, LOL.

I think you are right.
Yes he used for the word is outdated especially considering his age  but as Yuzuru being a huge baseball fan he probably used to the term for the purpose of it. There is any more intention.
I also don't like the stereotypic image of being good wife.

2016 NHK Trophy - Yuzuru Hanyu FS [NBC] - thanks to Dasani again

With Johnny saying something really important imo - this piece [of music] is so quiet and so delicate it takes a skater as good as Yuzuru to make this work :luv17: and then the part about staying after the Olympics? :luv17: :luv17:

ETA Oops double but yes. I am not a fan of Tara but Johnny ahhh. Some people would do well to listen to what he says.

^Johnny is the reason I listen to NBC commentary even if I have to put up with Tara talking soooo much...

Well, on the Hanyu-planet a shuu paa, means a quad jump. I'm thinking for the future if he ever becomes a coach he might need a translator for the Hanyu languages of skating.
Or everyone will be like :scratch2: when he explains how you should do a quad jump

I wonder how Yuzuru would be as a coach

I'm reposting this quote here because I have decided I don't really want to play with the other thread :)

A man-bun.
I wonder how that'd look.
ok I'm not actually very good at this, and I'm not sure this is what you had in mind...? :roll9: but whatever. I tried.
(of course there's always this kind of man bun, but I don't think that's what you meant)

Ask and you shall receive :p Italian fanboy AKA how to make a love declaration in 4 minutes time (the LOL are my comments):

1) We don't joko any more here in Sapporo because it's the moment of truth between Yuzuru Hanyu and Nathan Chen (mention the SP scores of both)... an impressive margin. Here is Yuzuru Hanyu in front of his homecrowd, he must not let emotions take him and he has to skate as he knows (mentions of SC results). Here at home he has to demostrate that he is the number 1.
2) He still surpassed 180 points with some mistakes at SC (LOL, he immediately reacted to the hint of criticism). The outwordly skater of Sendai, look with what he starts...4L...perfectly executed, incredible!! It's the first 4L in the GP ever. A 4S of astonishing beauty...exceptional! A small mistake on the Step sequence. 3F without preparation, perfectly inserted in the choreo. Second Salchow with fall... in the second half of the program (LOL, from the voice you can hear that he is in actual pain for him). But immediately the reaction, a 4L executed incredibly. And then the main course of the house, the 3A followed by a 3T well after the second half of the program.
1) And here the quality increases.
2) Second 3A followed by a 2S but the idea was to execute another triple there.
1) Two combos of incredible difficulty at the end of the program. Attention cause there is still another jump, that sometimes give him difficulties. Here also almost no preparation and 3Lutz, perfect. Marvelous Yuzuru Hanyu and he enters history with this program because it's the first time that a 4L is performed cleanly in a GP event. There has been a costly fall (explain the system of deduction, love that they try to inform people on rules). This is a program that could reach 115 of TES or maybe even more because also the 3S in combo lacks...so he could reach beyond 120 of TES, something unbelievable.
1) Something incredible indeed, especially in the first and last part of the program, pity for the mistake in the half. Look, looking at the Japanes public, which is always so composed, you could see their smile even when they had their masks on. It has been a true spectacle to watch. In Japan in front of his public he gave a great performance and maybe the mistake spurred the great reaction in the second half because he needed a reaction...
2) And it arrived with the 4L that he is commenting with his coach...not perfectly in axis but here we are in front of a true talent. I personally think he is the greatest of history (LOL at the love declaration) because he is complete, he has grandiose SS, and this 4S is a thing of beauty, a perfect position in the air, a landing that gives the idea of having realized something very easy even if it's a jump of extreme difficulty (LOL at me, I kept nodding at the screen while hearing him). Those magnificent landings, a 3A that alone is worth the ticket price of the entire competition (super LOL) a 4T like that and everything inserted in the choreo. This is a program that probably still has to improve in this area, because he treated us with programs with richer transitions and with difficult entries in difficult jumps and he is raising the bar even more.
1) He doesn't leave anything behind
2) But he is an incredible skater, we said that in the past season, he is putting the score system in crisis because when you go so easily beyond 100 TES it's difficult for everybody else to keep up. The score in TES and PCS become unbalanced but he made us think about the actual system.
1) He won the GPF three times in a row and is going to win the fourth...well if Fernandez allows this, clearly...but it would be an epic feat, no one before has won 4 consecutive GPF in a row before.
2) A supernatural skating technique and here we wait the stratospheric score (comment the score in relation to falls and deduction). It's not the best of the season because Fernandez went beyond 200, but the total is amazing, beyond 300.
1) Which is far from his own record, that he set in the GPF last year but the applause is great. He flies in the final with his personal best in the season (he mentions how difficult must have been for Chen to skate after Yuzu, cute part "I think that after seeing Hanyu they are a bit taken by discomfort", goes on mentioning the scores and the GPF finalists).
2) Here great feat of Hanyu, incredible in front of his public.

Anyone knows if he is returning to Toronto or he is going to GPF from Japan?

For the past seasons I think he stayed in Japan and met Orser there at Marseille. They would need to arrive at France by Tuesday/Wednesday the latest, next week, so it is a waste of travel time going to Canada and back. Waste of energy too. He would only have less than 1 week training time there anyway.

Last edited:
My guess would be he's staying in Japan since it's only 1 week +/- a day before they would be leaving for GPF in France anyway. I think last year he stayed in Japan. Wasn't it a longer time between NHK and GPF last year? I cannot remember.

I do feel sorry for the N. Americans who are here at NHK. The Japanese skaters can stay here and leave next week, the Europeans can fly home and be closer to France, the skaters who are in N.America fly directly over... but these skaters, ie. Tessa/Scott, Meagan/Eric, Nathan have to take long flight home and then fly again... unless they choose to stay in Japan or go straight to Europe now. I am always interested in logistics like that...

Thanks, I'm glad to hear that, I also think it can be great for him to stay in Japan after such a long time in Canada.

NHK 2016 Gala

From Akiko's room interview before the gala:
- only slept for 3 hours yesterday!
- difference between first 4s and 2nd 4s? only mentally. Coach said you can jump even with your eyes closed! Even when you are picking your nose!
- Very happy to hear audience's "oohs..." when he took off his jacket for SP; still might change coming up!
- When being "off", sleep until noon, play games until early morning.

ARTICLES & TRANSLATIONS

http://www.nikkansports.com/sports/news/1743955.html
New article talking about changes in his diet. Maybe a native Japanese poster could translate this in detail, but from what I can decipher, it says that after Autumn Classic, he felt that he needs to build more muscle to carry himself to the second half of the free. He started drinking soup with protein, changing up between 3 different flavours, corn, potato, and miso. He happily reports his gain in muscle mass (weight without fat?) to the people in charge of his diet. But it's only in amounts of grams!
A native here and I assure you it's a pretty accurate translation of the second paragraph. I guess you opted out "he's a light eater" as a reason for taking protein fortified soup with three flavor variations, but everyone reading this thread knows about Yuzuru well enough they all would know that anyway.

COMMENTARY TRANSLATIONS

And real Russian commentary, they're late today
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfKHP8z3XDI
I am so tired I am not sure I can even English but until the professor comes -he made a small, usual intro. Called the 4Lo wonderful and the 4S beautiful. Another 4S in the second half of the program, third but did not make it. Then something like, look what he does, a 4T. Tried four quads, did three clean ones or very clean. That the 3A combo is in the second half of the program. After the program if I am hearing this correctly says Yuzuru said he'd have a 300 for both, before the NHK and how if he remember how he skated the SP so he needs 196, something in order to pass the phenomenal number of 300. That it's possible as TES, home ice, home crowd, the love of home audience. That he didn't make the 2nd 4S, that should have been a combo so that there is the deduction for the fall and the REP. But even without that, Hanyu is superb, repeats that he tried 4 quads, wonders where all the energy comes from in such a fragile/delicate and slender young man. Something I'm not entirely sure of but about making history. Lots of talk about the GPF, sorry but skipping that, how Chen can make it, Rippon, Voronov, etc. Then says we're again enjoying the most beautiful moments that Hanyu performed. Again about Chen. And results. Yes, yes, 300 points, 197,58, 301 and a bit. He promised, he did it. Man of his word, Yuzuru Hanyu. Sorry it's not better, my brain is cooked.

Yuzuru Hanyu
FS
NHK 2016

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VfKHP8z3XDI

If there's anyone else the Japanese audience waited for with more eagerness, I don't know who that is. It's Yuzuru Hanyu, the Olympic Champion, World record holder in SP, FS and cumulative scores, who's performing in his homeland. As a matter of fact, he's from Sendai, which is not far from Sapporo, on the same island of Hokkaido (some seriously skewered geography here, I know).
4Lo, great! 4Sal, beautiful! 3F. One more 4Sal in the second half of the programme, deep into the second half of it! He didn't succeed with it, so the jump will have a lowered base value. What is Hanyu coming up with! 4T! Four quads and three done cleanly or very cleanly! 3A-3T in the second half of the programme! (after Yuzu doubles his salchow) Even Hanyu lacks strength a bit sometimes. 3Lz right at the end!
Hahyu is stunning even even when he falls! He does something incredible! Not long before the beginning of NHK Yuzuru said he felt ready to reach 300 points in his score for two programmes. So if we remember how well he skated in his SP, we'll find out he got 103.89 points, which means he has to get a little over 196 to get to that phenomenal mark. Judging by his technical marks he might well do it, since this is his home GP, home stadium, home audience, home ice. The love of home audience can produce miracles with Yuzuru. Well, yes, he didn't manage to land his second 4Sal, and since it had to be in a combo - you can't repeat the same jump solo, one of them has to be in a combination, that's why its base value will be lowered, -4 and a deduction for the fall. But even without that jump Hanyu is just brilliant: 4 quads, 3Lz right at the end, wonderful spins, step sequence... Where does this delicate and outwardly frail young man take his energy from? There, he touched his talisman, the yellow Winnie the Pooh, for luck and set off to make history for the umpteenth time. It's just unbelievable!
Now I'll get down to calculations to see who's going to the GPF - Javier Fernandez, Patrick Chan, Shoma Uno and now Yuzuru Hanyu - the four of them are going there. We have the only skater left - Nathan Chen, who was fourth in France, so he has to finish second here to get to the Final. Then he edges out Adam Rippon, but Rippon will go to the Final, but Boyang Jin will be left at home. If Chen comes third or lower, Boyang will go to the Final and Nathan will be left out, just like Sergey Voronov. Can you imagine that - even Voronov had a chance, albeit thin, to go to the GPF. But it was highly unlikely because for Sergey to get to the Final, Hanyu had to finish outside the six top men here, which is improbable. So far we've enjoyed the best part of Hanyu's performance (he goes over his calculations again!!!) There comes the score! Oh yes, yes! Yuzuru Hanyu gets 300 points! 197.58 and over 301! 301.47 is the score Yuzuru Hanyu gets! He said he would do it, and he kept his word!

Taiwanese TV I think, they are speaking Mandarin though.

My translation skills result in a very dry read...

SP [M = male commentator, F = female]

F: Next is Hanyu Yuzuru from Japan. He changed his SP costume color. Was the gold medalist from 2014 Olympics. 21 years old. This season he placed first at Autumn Classic and second at Skate Canada. Everyone is eagerly anticipating his performance.

M: First jumping pass, 4Lo, but stepped out. 4S-3T very nice. Flying spin. 3A very nice. Sit spin level 4. This stsq has a very special design, can earn a lot of points. Combination spin, again level 4. As you can see Hanyu Yuzuru has executed all seven elements very very well. He has great jumping ability, he can do 4S-3T very nicely with GOE +2 or +3. 3A also with great entry and can get high GOE. [Some technical stuff about spins that I don't understand, basically saying his spins are difficult and so level 4.] Therefore all the elements will score high, except the 4Lo with the step out, small error.

F: That's why after he finished he made the just-a-bit-more gesture, for the first jump. 4Lo is a very difficult element, at Autumn Classic he was the first skater to land this jump in competition. Although there was a slight error with the first jump, overall the performance was splendid.

[during slow-mo]

M: 4Lo step out gets negative GOE, but 4S-3T was of very high quality. Because the 3A had steps before the entry, it should receive difficult level, so will get +3 GOE. Intricate stsq, level 4.

F: The SP choreography is very wild, which was able to drive audience engagement. This season Hanyu Yuzuru's season's best for SP was 88.30, his personal best 110.95 was achieved at the last GPF, he is the current world record holder. He is still thinking (regretting) his first jump, just a tiny bit short of perfection.

M: I think his score should be over 100. [Then they read the scores.] A very shocking score. [Here by shocking she means massive.] Overtakes America's Nathan Chen, currently in first.

FS, a few bits I can't hear

Next is another skater from the host country, the 2014 Winter Olympics gold medalist, Hanyu Yuzuru. He scored 103.89 in the SP. He is the current record holder for all three world records. This season he won Autumn Classic and was second at Skate Canada. Now to enjoy his LP.

4Lo successfully completed. 4S very nice. Flying combination spin, then Biellmann position. Step sequence. 3F. 4S [can't hear this bit]. 4T quite nice. 3A-3T. Second 3A combo [can't hear this bit]. Flying sit spin. Impressive step sequence. Ina bauer. 3Lz. Combination spin. Everything aside from one 4S was very well executed.

Again, like yesterday, it was a bit short of perfection. Yesterday it was the 4Lo; today the 4Lo was successful but he fell on the second 4S. But the overall performance was excellent.
After his performance the young girls have a lot of work to do needing to quickly pick up those presents, lot of Winnie the Pooh becuase he likes Pooh. The kinds of Pooh plushies are increasing.

At Skate Canada he scored 183.41 for his LP. He is the current record holder for all three world records. Last year at GPF his LP scored 219.48 and his total was 330.43. Back then he broke the world record at both NHK and GPF.

[slow-mo]

First jump, 4Lo. Brian Orser very excited. 4S. 4T, done quite effortlessly. Change foot sit spin. Entire audience very focused watching his LP. He needs 144.56 to overtake Tanaka Keiji, which shouldn't be too difficult. [Read scores.] A new season's best. [Can't hear this bit.] Total 301.47, didn't set a new record but still passed 300 again. Can relax a bit now, surely he was quite nervous before.

EX, a tiny bit more gushing than before

Japanese, Hanyu Yuzuru, gold medalist. Total score passed 300. Next is his exhibition.

Ina bauer. Combination spin. Biellmann. 3A. Flying camel spin. Sit spin. Today he became a very elegant swan.

Japanese skater Hanyu Yuzuru delivered a magnificent performance. He was second at Skate Canada and first at NHK, qualifying for the GPF. He is seeking a fourth straight win, he's been the GPF winner since 2013. He has qualified for the GPF for six years straight.

[slow-mo]

Hydroblading.

The audience is clapping non-stop waiting for Hanyu Yuzuru to perform his encore. [video breaks for a bit] he's covered in sweat, about to perform again. Hanyu Yuzuru is definitely a very popular athlete. [No idea what she's calling this.]

A great skater, not just an athlete but also a performer. His exhibition has a completely different feel to his SP, it's as if two different people were performing. Performing this bit of his SP again surely makes the audience want more.

NHK 2016

It's not hard to guess who's going to close the gala. In Japan, there's emerging a cult of Yuzuru Hanyu - now, perhaps, even Japan's darling Mao Asada might not be able to compete with him. Hanyu's fantastic, what can we say. He came up with incredible performances in Japan - they weren't faultless, but given the difficulty of men's figure skating, every single male skater can make mistakes.

11.11.11 - Moscow time when the music for Yuzuru Hanyu's Ex ended. It looks symbolic, if one looks at the row of these ones. Perhaps Hanyu will be able to win all the six competitions he wants to take part in this season? He's failed once already - Patrick Chan won SC, but the GPF and Japan Nationals and World Championship are still ahead. Perhaps, he could also want to take part in the 4CC, but I'm not sure Hanyu will want to have such a tight schedule for competitions. This Ex number with Notte Stellata by Il Volo was choreographed by David Wilson, but the music was suggested by none other than Tatiana Tarasova. It's interesting that this year Hanyu has worked with three different choreographers - Geoffrey Buttle created his SP, Shae Lynn Bourne his LP and his Ex was made by David Wilson. Now we'll see what the Olympic Champion is going to show us during his encore - Prince or something more traditional local Japanese melodies. No, it's his SP.
Hanyu's brilliant! (now news about Russian skaters...)
