There will always be stuff like this when someone is the so much the indisputable number one - here in Australian it's called tall poppy syndrome, the urge to cut the highflyers down to size. At least Yuzu has all his loyal (and extremely numerous) fans to point out the mistakes and protest unfairness... and for the most part, at least both Yuzu's Oly golds are mostly undisputed (the first one, his FS was criticised, but since Patrick was worse, it's not like the unholy tow that is still the ladies at Sochi)

And there are also plenty of folk, to be fair, who insist that Shoma - and pretty much blame him personally - being invariably overscored robbed Javi of the silver (and I have little doubt Shoma's heard the criticising).

I have my doubts that Shoma is all that aware or even cares about opinions in English (a language he doesn't read or speak) on fan forums.

I've seen it on news articles too but now I think about it, you could be right - they were English and I doubt he reads English. And unlike Patrick admits he did after Sochi, he doesn't seem the sort to take it emotionally (comes over as very phlegmatic, our Shoma).

In the end, what-ifs fuel no fire, true. Yuzu got his almost fairy tale ending and that's that; I hope after the fuss dies down Naomi can enjoy her victory too.

(BTW, I have long thought swear Yuzuru's entire 2018 season would fail totally as fiction, it is pretty much pure fairytale complete with not-so-evil-and-they-all-like-him-really-anyway stepbrothers in the other 5-6 top men, the press (American especially) determined that he wouldn't and couldn't go to the Olympics ball, the injury standing in for Cinders' tatty rags that somehow turned into a dazzling Chopinesque ball outfit... and a golden medal-shaped slipper. I mean, you couldn't write this stuff... except for the sheer blood, tears and sweat that we know went into his pumpkin-carriage programs)
 
Shoma's season's best/personal best would have been enough for the win (he's scored 319 twice and Yuzu won with 317), but he had other minor errors besides just that fall.

This is the mindtrap that this article is trying to go for. using another skater's PB/SB from some other competition to compare to Yuzu's non-PB performance. If we set out the what-ifs for Yuzu as well (i.e. he made no mistake ), he would still be ten marks ahead of his competitors, which is also what happened at the Olympics - that is either way, the marks difference is such its not even close to "could have been" gold.

Yuzu had to explain at the press conference to a journalist about what would happen if Shoma didn't fall because there was a very similar article to this current NHK one came out right after the Olympics. Except it didn't garner much attention because people were too busy celebrating Japan's gold, but obviously a journalist picked it up. And he explained it again at CWW. He should not have to answer such "what ifs" that are not even close to being "what if". It's like putting a question mark next to his win despite he had the largest point difference out of all 4 disciplines.

Didn't Yuzu once said if the script of his life story got sent to a manga/anime company it will probably get turned down because it would have been taken as too out of touch with reality :laugh: (although I would say Prince of Tennis and Kuroko are very out of touch with reality too)

Not many people can declare they are going to be Olympic champion and jump the 4A and quint on national TV when they are just 10 years old (and in a discipline that had no Asian winners before him), and stick to that plan their whole life. I am sure whoever interviewed baby Yuzu that day probably thought he was completely out of his mind.

I'm one of the first to say if you apply one "what-if" you have to apply another, which is why I say you should just stick to the "what-is" or else you're down the rabbit hole. There are many scenarios that could have gone down, and at the end of the day the best skater in the world won. But past scores do set a benchmark for expectations to some degree or else organizers wouldn't be giving us that info when someone is about to skate, and skaters have expectations for what they could likely get too. That's why Yuzu calculates. But in the middle of competition it's putting a "what-is" (current scores) against a "what-if" (should that person be able to replicate something similar to a past performance). As a viewer I'm thinking "what do they have to do? Will x, y, z be enough?" Like, when I saw Yuzu skating in morning FS practice only doing toes and sals in the run through, in my mind I was like "oh, he's going for the 330+" knowing he had a 111 in the bank and knowing what he's received before with that layout. I don't think that thinking is totally unreasonable as scores can be fairly consistent (for some more than others I should say). But after everything is said and done, the what-ifs are pretty useless and it's more like wishful thinking.

I don't know about VPN on cell phones but people on PH plan to stream it on rabbit :)
I am confused about that restriction... Last year they only geo-blocked it in Japan because it was later broadcasted by Japanese TV. But why do they block it in other countries? Lombardia Trophy isn't restricted...

I didn't know that! Was it better quality than the streaming video? I've never seen it. Only the Canadian commentary.
 
Just download a VPN switch app to watch it guys. It's no big deal. But it takes alot of data though.

Wow thank you! I've never seen the Japanese one! Surprisingly they are a lot chattier than on the Canadian one, chattier than usual. They usually just mention the elements and say if it's good or bad, but the guy was even talking about his world record 2 years ago! I actually found it a touch annoying, but you can tell they were excited for him and what he'd do. I wish they had it in even better HD clarity though. It was just something else live.
 
Man, only looking at streaming and schedule now and realize that I won't be able to stream it live...:( Also during both GP weekends that Yuzuru is going I will be traveling on trains/planes! Guess I need to start learning how to decipher emojis so I can look here and know what's going on. :laugh:

Usually, one of the guys from In The Loop podcasts streams Hanyu ice shows and competitions live on Rabbit. I'm sure we will have other people streaming it for us. :luv17:
