Yuzuru's message, "Hello, everyone. This is Yuzuru Hanyu. I would really like to thank you for placing the new monument. I am very glad that my monument was added to near Goshikinuma, the place said to be the origin of figure skating. But thanks to the scheduling conflict we got two ceremonies instead of one! Any reason for Yuzu making the news one extra time is good for the off season so we can see more TV and newspaper reports. The newspaper spread today where all the names of the people who contributed are listed along with Yuzu pictures is just beautiful. Although it is pity indeed he didn't get to hear the orchestra play all his programs music.

Today, Heisei(平成）era ends in Japan. Heisei era was from 1989 and it lasted for 31 years, and Yuzuru was born in Heisei 6 year. Usually, an era ends when an emperor passes away. For example, I was born in Showa(昭和）era (it lasted for 64 years and 7 days), and I still remember when the emperor met his demise, Showa era ended suddenly and new name of era Heisei was announced. Showa emperor had been in a coma for a long time, so his family and the government must have been preparing for the case he passed away. However, this time, the emperor of Heisei is old but still alive, I guess the confusion in this country will be less. I hope all events will be carried out smoothly.

Generally speaking, many of us feel Heisei era was the era of "natural disasters" and "violent crimes". But there were a lot of great things happened and Yuzuru's achievements were of course one of them. I hope new era "Reiwa"（令和）will be peaceful and bring happiness to Yuzuru as well.

I wonder if Yuzuru watches Japanese TV in somewhere today

And an event by JSF was taken place in Tokyo today, but Yuzuru was absent because he is in the training camp in overseas now. (Japanese word is "海外合宿", I wonder if this just means he went back to TCC and is training there.)

Putting aside the two Olympic golds, Heisei was in some way full of disasters for Yuzu as well, from earthquake/tsunami/nuclear meltdown, ice rink shutdown to his CoC crash accident, rare abdomen disease requiring operation to of course the frequent injuries. Here's to hoping all painful things for Yuzu will stay in the Heisei period, and he starts afresh and with good fortune in the Reiwa period.

His training expenses are covered by ANA, JSF gives him only (yes I say only) about 200,000 yen each month if I am not wrong.

The timing ANA signed him has got to be the most impeccable...In 2013 before Yuzu had any major international gold and became expensive haha~ And I recall it was for one year at that time so Yuzu had only a year to prove himself - and he responded with GPF gold, Olympics gold and Worlds gold in a row Quite the overkill of proving oneself. Needless to say they signed long term contract immediately.

Orser said he charged USD110/hour back in 2010 when he was coaching Yuna Kim.

When reporters asked Orser in 2018 what's his fee , he said it has increased but.not much. This was when it was announced Evgenia was going to Canada-

Its interesting that they showed lots of Yuzu's moments in the previous era.

That - above Miyazaki who, let us be honest, is really much more famous internationally - did surprise me, but then when you look at what Yuzu represents, not just as a sporting superstar but in his life, his humanitarian work, his inspiration... it does say so much about everything the Japanese see in him.

Oh like my nerves really need to see COC 2014 or even think about it again The first time I saw that skate, all blood, bandages and iron willpower, I cringed all the way through... and then when he broke down in tears... so did I! :sad21: never mind that it was some years later.

Oh and I mentioned this in the general thread out there, but the voting for the overall rank was done real time during a TV broadcast. People watching TV were only given 30 seconds to vote on the spot. In other words, when given only seconds to consider who is your 'hero', more people thought of Yuzuru than even Miyazaki, so it is very reflective of his public support (i.e. this is not the result of fan power voting, but general public love). 180,000 is a HUGE sample size in Japan, even 1000 for a survey is already considered big.
