Google Hangouts On Air

U.S. Figure Skating has been uploading chats with U.S. skaters going to worlds.

This is mostly funny business, interpersed with a few serious questions. And pets are front and center.

First one: Scimeca/Knierim, Josh Farris
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=qkDt9GxweRk

Second one: Chock & Bates, Ashley Wagner, Adam Rippon
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=pNKx33hL8nI

Third One: Polina Edmunds, Denney & Frazier, Hubbell & Donohue
http://m.youtube.com/watch?v=fHRxQ7gBrmk

Fourth one: Shibutanis and Gracie Gold

For the uninitiated:

The Shibutanis and Gracie Gold are scheduled for the fourth and final hangout in this series.
It can be viewed live tonight at 8:00 pm EDT.
It also will be archived on YT.
They last approx. 30 min.

The idea is for the skaters to answer questions posted on social media with the hashtag in the OP.

The able moderator is Michael Terry of USFS, who asked Josh to answer our own karne's question :), for example.

So far my favorite 'hangout' was the C/B and Ashley/Adam, mostly b/c it was fun despite the tech difficulties - C/B with their avatars and pets and A/A's friendship.

I had to turn off the one last night, found it kind of dull after about 10 minutes in even though I like Polina as an interview subject.

I'm sure the Shibs will be great b/c they are very savvy with video communication. Gracie seems to have a fun off ice personality, so I'd like to see more of that.

I've definitely enjoyed the Google hangouts this week, and tonight's was no exception. Grace, Maia, and Alex are all very articulate, interesting people who can still get a little goofy. And we saw lots more dogs tonight, which I loved! I think seeing everyone's pets might have been my favorite part of all the vids lol.

I just realized that Jason Brown was the only one not to participate in this, maybe scheduling conflicts?

Overall, I think this was a good idea for the fans and it seems like the team members enjoyed themselves too, especially on the video chats so they could say hi to each other long distance. And yes, the pets were the best part, lol.

I liked watching these hangouts and am a much bigger fan of Gracie after watching last night's hangout. She has a cute and quirky personality that I hadn't really noticed before. She is funnier than I realized, too, and seems pretty level headed. I wish we got to see more of her real personality in her programs. The icy, generic pretty princess thing she has going on is not that interesting and more importantly, just isn't representative of who she is in real life.

Yes, me too. It took one or two questions for her to relax, but after that she was a lot of fun, especially about cooking. I can just see Frank restricting her from handing out home-baked goodies to her fellow students more than 3 times a month. :laugh2: It must have been quite the scene.

It is new, at least at this level. I think they have done a couple google hangouts at random, but never before as precompetition sendoffs.Usually we get phone Q&A sessions with reporters through icenetwork

Last year they did one with Jason.

It was. She has seemed a bit shy and stiff in conventional interviews, but she was really able to shine here.

As Doris said, the #WhatsUpWorldTeam series was new.
(BTW, I imagine that the media teleconferences will be happening next week, and I hope that at least some of them still will be posted on IN per usual.)

But here are some additional skater-related Hangouts with American skaters past and present:

The first-ever USFS Google+ Hangout:

Hangout with Michelle Kwan

Streamed live on Oct 1, 2013
Hangout with Michelle Kwan (at one of the USOC pre-Sochi media summits)

Two more USFS Hangouts from last season:

Hangout on Ice
U.S. Figure Skating
Streamed live on Dec 18, 2013
What is it like inside practice? You're about to find out.
Join U.S. Figure Skating as we go inside the World Arena as elite figure skaters Max Aaron, Joshua Farris, Angela Wang and Agnes Zawadzki go through a typical practice with their coaches.

2014 Olympic Team Hangout on Air
U.S. Figure Skating
Streamed live on Jan 12, 2014
Hosted by Olympic gold medalist Sarah Hughes and YouTube Star Michael Buckley, fans will be able to meet, and ask questions to the 2014 U.S. Figure Skating Olympic Team on the same day the team has been named!
[Included 11 of the 15 Sochi Olympians. Jeremy and Jason were two of the exceptions, b/c the live event took place at 7 pm, at the same time as the post-FS presser announcing them as the two Sochi men. I think the other two exceptions were Ashley and Gracie??]

And when Make-A-Wish held a Hangout to grant a Sochi-related wish last season, Scott Hamilton took part along with many USFS skaters who were backstage at the Disson Tribute to Legends show (Max, Adam, Agnes, Gracie, Ashley Wagner, Simon, Marissa, Evan Bates, Madi Chock):
Hangout with Wish Kid Kaitlyn
Make-A-Wish America
Streamed live on Dec 11, 2013

Haha. I wonder what he told her to do with the reeses from 4CCs. He must have been like, throw them away! And Gracie would be like, nope, I'm gonna make brownies and bring them to the rink! :party2:

I think she was more relaxed here because she was at home in front of her computer, surrounded by her dogs. She really seems to have a mischievous side to her which I like to see, instead of the robotic ice princess we see when she's competing. You can see the difference when she performs her "Shake it Off" routine, so I'd like to see more of that Gracie on the ice.

BTW, the Team USA pre-Worlds media teleconferences (very different animals from the Hangouts, of course) started today. Polina Edmunds was first.

AFAIK, audio of some of the pre-Nats media teleconferences was not published.
The only pre-Nats audio published was from the Shibutanis, Jason Brown, Wagner, Gold, and Edmunds:
