I hope 2010 wasn't Mirai's peak. She was so good that year - she had gotten used to her new body and had great choreo, coaching and the fire of it being an Olympic year. Plus she was the underdog which is obviously the way she likes it. She's obviously had more significant body changes since - as we women all know we go through it at around 15/16 then 17/18 - as well as whatever training and coaching and mental difficulties she might have been facing.
Anyway, it reminds me of Kimmie Meissner - another 16-year-old up and commer who had her best year during an Olympic year when she was not the favorite. Everyone expected Kimmie to stay on top but it didn't happen for various reasons. It's like both Mirai and Kimmie were the creme de la creme that year but didn't really know it. At least Kimmie didn't get psyched out and got her world gold!
I still think Mirai can get back on top. You go girl!!!
Mirai's story is similar but Kimmie's story ended much quicker. Kimmie capitalized on the lack of competition and mistakes of others to win her world title (as everyone should) so that was probably the highlight of her career. She did well in 2007 until she got to worlds and then after that it was all downhill. By the end of that next season she was gone.
Mirai has had middle of the pack seasons since Vancouver but, unlike Kimmie, she's still in the fight. Like Kimmie she has had to adjust to body changes but, unlike Kimmie, Mirai's body changes haven't killed her ability to land a jump. Kimmie simply couldn't rotate anymore; Mirai has UR issues (like she's always had) but they aren't nearly as severe and detrimental as Kimmie's issues were. I remember in 2008 Kimmie landed a number of jumps 1/2 a turn short; it made for some pretty ugly falls.
Mirai is re-surging this season and, if she keeps it up, has a good shot at making her 2nd Olympic team.
As for my predictions:
1. Ashley - She's not in defend mode; she's in fight mode...that's why she'll be able to defend
2. Mirai - She's gotten stronger with every competition
3. Gracie - She'll do well in the SP but I think her first-time nerves will keep her out of the top 2
4. Christina - Something may be missing...then again maybe not...she's definitely the darkhorse of this competition
5. Angela - Equal to Gracie in firepower but suffers from SP nerves plus lack of rep means she probably won't make the podium
6. Agnes - I think she'll do well in one program and flub the other
7. Alissa - I don't think she'll do enough to be competitive with the top but I'm hoping she doesn't tank
8. Courtney - Big jumps, one interesting spin, but terrible presentation won't get her into the top 5
9. Hannah - Lots of spunk but lack of presences and small jumps
10. Vanessa - Jumps aren't getting any bigger, probably a lot of UR calls
The only one I'm pretty sure about is Ashley. I honestly think 2-4 will be some combination of Mirai, Gracie and Christina. If Mirai skates cleanly and with some spark as she has been lately, she has a good shot at that 2nd spot. Gracie has the jumps and if she lands them she'll be 2nd; however, I'm not sold on her ability to land all of them as she has yet to come close this season. Christina is the darkhorse b/c if she lands her jumps and skates well she'll have the ability to score very well.
We'll see what happens...
