Wow, Lloyd has really improved on his presentation!

Just went back and watched Arin and Jedediah as well, what a great competition so far.
For some reason Lloyd had never been on my radar before. He certainly is now!

I also thought Emma Lyons had improved a lot.

Jedidiah's score would have been enough for 4th place in the SP at this year's JGP Armenia or Poland. I know that domestic scores are inflated compared to international ones, but it is still an impressive score for a British junior. If they skated like they did today, Jed, Arin and Tao would each have chance of reaching the final at Junior Worlds. I am starting to hope that if Ed manages to get the FS TES for senior worlds, BIS might send someone else to juniors.

He's off to Golden Spin next week it looks like so fingers crossed! Jed, Arin and Tao all have minimums so it'd be great if one of them could get to go.

I am confused. Has a load of stuff been moved out of our British and Irish thread into a new one?

He was so close to getting it at Warsaw. Less than a point away. They are sending Ed out a lot this year, which is making it look like they don't expect Graham to be back this season. Phil Harris' comment about coaching in the US was a bit unclear about whether Graham was going to be coaching there or was just moving with the rest of the family.

Yes.

When I stumbled across this thread by accident last night, I requested to the Mods that the posts about the British Championships that had been made in the Season Thread after this thread was created be moved here.

I just thought that since there's now a dedicated thread, it may as well be made use of.

Sorry if it has caused problems.

Mmmm. This post doesn't quite fit now that it is being posted in this thread. But, hey!

For the last Olympics, sport climbing was an event for the first time. One the CBC, the men's event had two commentators who were both climbing experts, and they were terrible - much too esoteric for a casual audience. One was busy speculating about all the possible mathematical outcomes in the final.

The women's event had one climbing specialist and Brenda Irving, who is a general sportscaster who does some figure skating. They were much better, as Brenda asked all the questions casual viewers wanted to know. They even discussed how to actually do some of the bouldering moves, and then one of the climbers chose an unconventional approach that the climbing commentator had suggested.

So "doesn't know the sport" is not necessarily bad, if the "professional sports commentator" is good.

That is a very good point. I've tended to find over the years that my favourite commentary teams are those that pair a journalist / broadcaster who has an interest in the sport with a former competitor. For example:

  • Murray Walker and Martin Brundle in Formula 1
  • Jack Burnicle and Jamie Whitham in World Superbikes
  • Simon Reed and Chris Howarth in Figure Skating (before Simon started to get out of touch)

The exception to that rule was Toby Moody and Julian Ryder in MotoGP. They were both journalists / broadcasters. But they were brilliant together. Because Julian had been around the sport for so long, and had such a vast knowledge (including the technical side), having him was as good as having a former competitor. Both of them were so down to Earth that it was like watching with friends. My biggest regret about Eurosport losing the rights 10 years ago was that it resulted in this brilliant commentary partnership breaking up.

If you get two former competitors, it can get too technical and what they are saying goes over the heads of the viewers. If you get two people from outside the sport, they mightn't pick up on significant things. So, I always think the best way to go is to have one of each.

The trick is finding the right two people to put together, so that they gel together. There is nothing worse than having two commentators that do not get along, because it comes through on the commentary.

Well, actually, there is one thing that is worse. Bringing in somebody that is ultra-critical about everything, whether it is justified or not, to a commentary team that is generally supportive and only gives constructive criticism. It is a recipe for disaster, and can lead to things seriously blowing up between the commentators! Anybody who watched the event a few years ago where six-times British Ladies Champion Joanne Conway was a stand-in commentator at British Eurosport knows what I mean!

I haven't seen any of the British Championships coverage, but from the comments here, it sounds like they have struck the right balance this year with the people they have got in their commentary team.

If the BBC does end up showing Worlds again this year, I hope Robin can put a good word in for the team he was working with at the British Championships. But, with cutbacks continuing at the BBC (the latest were announced a couple of days ago), they will probably want to use somebody that already works for them, rather than pay extra for a freelancer.

Is it the same lady that was commentating on the stream last year? I think it is... I got quite annoyed last year with some of the clueless comments that just seemed to go a bit too far, but I haven't been annoyed yet this time around, so that's an improvement

Just checking in on my lunch break... Nice skate from Macey, I found her very pleasant to watch with pretty lines...

No. Last year was the BBC commentator.

I've missed most of the basic novice lasses. Only saw the last four. I tried starting work early, but had too much which couldn't be left until this evening.

Oh, well in that case this lady is definitely an improvement!

Honestly, the commentary is a lot better than it is some years. We at least aren't getting the "I don't know anything about skating, ha, ha, ha" attitude this year. I can see that Claire has tried to familiarise herself with the skaters, and I appreciate that.
You have summed the commentator up so well, Thank you for putting it into words so well.

I'm way behind today. Have just watched basic novice pairs. I hope Emily and Callum stay together as a pair. They have the potential to become a senor elite pair in the future.

I think there are two pairs spots for Euros yes! Which is great.

Caught up on the morning pairs sessions - agree that the baby pair Emily and Callum look really nice together.

Lots of great shorts from the pairs, Ana and Luke looked really confident. Harry and Lydia did too it was just a shame about the fall because I really enjoyed their performance!

How nice it was to have 4 advanced novice ice dance couples, it was fun to see the comparison. Juniors were great - nice looking new team as well as Ash and Atl doing their fabulous thing.

Seniors are going great so far, some fun nationals scoring (lol I love Lilah and Lewis, they looked fabulously sharp, was that Tessa I caught sight of)

Side note they have Aurelia Ippolito on the commentary for the ice dance, she is doing a really nice job!

I'm still on senior men. Ken Fitterer has done the best skate I've ever seen from him. Freddie seems to be coping very well with the jump to seniors. I would like to see him get sent out more internationally. We need him and Ed to push each other. Ed wasn't at his best but that doesn't really matter for this weekend. We need him to have a mini-peak for Zagreb so that he can get his FS minimum for Worlds.
