2014 Cup of China Mens Free Skate 11/08

What an awful accident. I commend Hanyu and Yan for still going out there for their fans. It was foolish from a health perspective, but I don't think they wanted to compromise the rest of their season with a WD and of course they wanted to perform for those who came to see them. It was very brave of them.

I blame no one but the judges. Both skaters showed some signs of being able to perform, apparently wanted to perform and their coaches made a judgement call to let them skate. Maybe not the best judgement but they appeared to be capable of performing. It was not surprising, however, that both skaters performed badly due to the accident. But that's where the judges should have judged what was put before them and not factor in a sympathy vote or give such outrageous artistic scores for a disjointed, painful performance. Scores of 6s and 7 should have been assigned to the artistic side. As much as the ice dance judges rated what they saw that evening, the judges for the men lost their objectivity to a preconceived notion of who should win, acccording to them. Shameful.

Well we can say easily from behind of monitor they should have done this, withdraw etc. Everyone knows that health is most important, but from athlete point of view it would have been heart breaking to WD. It is when someone on top should have been able to make decision to WD or not

I don't know. I usually don't believe in such things, but this whole event was filled of bad luck, i don't know

But here's the judging rant... I know it's a bit classless (as have been some of the comments) given Hanyu's predicament - and I feel horrible for him - but the reality is we still have to talk about the skating.

Hanyu had an SP with a tripled quad and no combo, he had an LP with 5 falls (including a UR) and just 4 triples. Overall, the 6 triple jumps Hanyu cleanly executed between SP and LP (3A, 3T & 3F, 3A+3S, 3Z) wouldn't even amount to Nguyen's 1 quad+7 triple FS (4S, 3A, 3A+3T, 3F+2T+2L, 3F+2T, 3L, 3Z). And somehow that translates to Hanyu beating Nguyen by 16 points. Kovtun's PCS score was also pretty high, but at least he landed one quad, and both axels (save for a touchdown on the 2nd one) and only had 1 fall on the 4S. It is absolutely insane that a FS with just 4 triples and 5 falls came 2nd in the FS with 84 PCS... and coupled with an SP with no quad or combo was STILL enough to win 2nd place in a GP event.

For those who are saying "Well, Hanyu got 90 PCS at Worlds 2014, so 84 here is about right..." consider Hanyu's TEB 2013 FS PCS of 81.94 with a quad fall/popped quad, versus 84.02 PCS with 5 falls (2 quad falls, an axel fall, a UR loop fall, and a lutz fall). It makes no sense.

Perhaps the emotion that the crowd was feeling somehow biased the judges? I can't even think straight about the scores or judging of this event due to the very traumatic events...
Overscored? Yes, absolutely.
I think Richard Dornbush should have been second and could have been had he not lost the last half of his LP.

I think the vast majority of people, maybe 95%, agree that it makes no sense, but what's done has been done. I don't think the circumstances are right to debate PCS, this was too much of a freak outlier incident to judge by normal standards.

I felt so bad for Hanyu but under the situation Orser or him should have just pulled out but, not to be unsympathetic, he did skate and bravo and kudos for being so brave- but on the other hand what is he saying to other people - sacrifice the body and health at all costs - who cares???? Be reckless and heck if you fall a few or a lot the judges will prop you out and you will get a medal and some cash? Okay dramatic yes, but really as much as Hanyu is a great skater his skating skills are not at least yet at the level of Lambiel or Chan and they often were accused of being propped up with errors but this was horrific. 5 mistakes not 2 or 3 the score is ridiculous and so are the pcs. at least his choreography, performance and interpretation should have been heavily marked down. Those pcs were an early Christmas gift and birthday gift wrapped into one. Now I really hope he heals fast and fully! Hanyu probably feels bad for several reason; poor guy but also poor other skaters. This is a scandal, an outrage an injustice the score Hanyu was given. This was not a mop the ice contest with your butt in spandex and sequins!

I don"t understand how program compents are scored and I try not to complain since the judges are experts... but I have to to say this, anyone remember the era of everyone screaming inflation? I wonder what they will call this one for Hanyu! I hope everyone that screamed inflation is around to scream out now too? This is baffling!

I can't deal with the emotion part of this right now cause I'm just.......I don't even know.

But I think we can all agree his PCS was too high, but as some posters have said before, even if his PCS drops to 74 he'd still be in second place. And I think he did enough to receive a 75+, but even a 69 PCS which would have given him bronze. If the placing's don't make sense, it not really due to PCS but its because he got the 2nd highest TES of the night, and 2nd only by 5 points.

I realized this with Hanyu, no matter how much his PCS is propped up, its his TES that gives him the medal. So those who questions his podium placing should focus more on the lack of more severe punishment for falls which is an IJS problem rather than a judging problem. But of course the judges need to pull it back a bit because they aren't doing him any favors by giving him a boost although I am glad that at least whenever they give Hanyu a boost in PCS, they do the same for 1 or 2 more skaters so its not a sole bias, but rather a "top of the pack" bias.

I think so too. Bless those people who can still think straight after they witnessed the accident directly in the ice rink.

We watched them collided through live stream and we are shock and worried until now. I wonder how people who were at the rink felt. Devastated, shock, overwhelming, bewildered...

Judges are human, too. They have been affected by the collision much worse than us.

Really? What's going to happen if we don't? I doubt anything will happen just because you don't start being "classless".

It's nothing new the IJS is stupid in a lot of ways - but flawed triples still count. Hanyu didn't have 5 falls and 4 triples, he had 5 falls and 2 quads and 6 triples + 1 URed triple. His BV is still higher than Nguyens. If those things are bugging you, you have the chance to talk about that at pretty much every event, but talking about it regarding this situation is unnecessary. You'll surely get another chance to take about Hanyuflatation or whatever come NHK.

I predict this thread will reach over 100 pages before CoR..

Guys, easy, please... really. Everyone here agree that his PCS should have been lower, but really how much ? I think it's still should be around 78. And then what ? What to do with Kovtun PCS ? Then he should get 77, and I think that would have been reasonable. And what that change in placement ? Nothing.

It was still TES that made job for him as always, not the PCS. Rules are the same for everyone. If some skaters can't score with clean performance in tES higher that someone with 5 falls then sorry .. but ho's fault is this ? This with falls that can make good TES still or this one that can't beat someone like that ?

I don't know, maybe beside -1 deduction for fall there should be also the same deduction in PCS side like -1 for fall

the skaters should have been forced to withdraw by the judges if the judges were not prepared and up to the task of judging with isu standards (as malleable as they are) because of injury. and that is where the scoring issue really is at its core, because after that, nothing makes sense because of the judges.

based on the health, those two skaters should not have been allowed back on the ice, regardless of what their own personal decisions were. That was the domino that brought everything down by chain reaction. with concussions, or possible concussions, there is no justification for taking chances and someone should have been in charge who knew better.

the first consideration should be the health and welfare of the skaters. wrong decisions were made in that regard. the distant second, compared to the first is the scoring. batting a thousand, wrong decisions were made in that regard as well. The two wrongs did not make a right, just made both wrongs worse.

I just have to say that, Han Yan, even after the incident, was floating across the ice. It was mesmerizing. Now I understand the inflation all these years. Yuzuru's speed and general skating skill is not un par with Han Yan, but Kovtun is just quite awful in comparison, especially considering the circumstance.

Bad situation and suspect scoring but some people here were and are acting incredibly ridiculous...

Hope they're not too banged up.
