Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

Well, I am sad that it seems he hasn't recovered mentally and psychically. But even though I am one of the person who said he "should not skate" the loudest, I am actually glad about what he has just showed us today. Super skating skills and breathtaking step sequence.

It looks to me like this is physical. His left thigh muscles are still damaged, and the 4T is driven from (toe-pick) and landed on the left leg.

By his own admission, his stamina (never great to begin with) is down. I'm afraid the LP will be tough for him. I don't think he's reduced the difficulty enough to manage with his injuries. I think the post-SP press conference where he said physically he felt "fine" is him trying to not make excuses (even if legitimate!).

Overall, though, his skating was beautiful and it's wonderful to see him developing and maturing. Well, I suppose this is one of those "life experiences" that Brian talked about in Yuzuru maturing from a young man to a man. As a parent to a 19 year old, I feel terribly protective of Yuzuru, but he has made his choices.

Best of luck to him and all the other skaters tomorrow!

I agree with you. Kurt Browning said Yuzuru had sprained ankle even before CoC. The collision, all the falls...only made it worse. I am so sorry for what happened. But he tried all his best. Kudos to all the effort!!!

Since my students are his age as well, I feel terrible protective of him, especially after all that happened. But I also respect his decision. To be fair I don't think he will go clean in the FS with that condition. But we can never tell. All the best luck to him.

I'm Yuzuru's age... and I find that he really is beautiful. Hee.

But more than his physical beauty, his recent interview reminded me of why I'm so enamored with him. He doesn't act like he's 19! He's so mature!
Also, he's strong and competitive and he's such a fighter... and yet he's humble at the same time and acknowledges what he has to work on. He's very self-aware. His drive, maturity, and humility make for a nice mix of traits in a person, and I hope he stays that way throughout the rest of his life. In some ways I really look up to him.

But first Yuzu take care of yourself!! I can wait for your perfect 3-quad LP, get better first! I honestly wouldn't mind it if he did all triples tomorrow, or even if he fails to qualify for the GPF ;_;

Despite the fall, this SP is ethereal and capitalized on Yuzu's improved skating skills. Now I just have to pray for a better FP and no further injuries.

Thank you for sharing. Soo adorable, Im glad he seems relaxed and happy, and as wierd as ever. Brian probably finds it adorable now, see the progression from thinking pooh was wierd and forgetting him to arranging him nicely at the boards and grabbing a pooh from the gifts after CoC. It was inevitable really Brian had no chance

Yuzuru really does have amazing musicality, doing literally everything to the music in all his programs but especially SP. And this sp is even better than pw for it.

Ok i did not follow Hanyu's news since sometimes, but I have few questions : He gave up the quad in the second part of SP or it changes just for the moment because of his injury ?
And where is the small step that he did before the lutz, the Walley jump or a jump like that ? he deleted it ?

yeah because of his injury he changed 3A with 4T, about walley jump he dumped it at COC too, but who knows maybe he will bring it back when he feels he can pull it off

This is just the beginning of all obstacles they will have to face in the next 4 seasons. There will be more up and down. i guess our mental is already much prepared already.

Here is full Japanese script of what Yuzuru said that at the press-conference. It makes more sense than that really short version from Sanspo. Yuzuru said that probably many people think it was reckless and dangerous, and criticized Brian and JSF, but he is really grateful to them cause they had respect for his determination and let him skate. He also described his condition (apparently he had ankle sprain even before he went to CoC, and the biggest problem that still has some impact is with his thigh, Han Yan's knee hit it at full speed).

It would be great if somebody translated it, it's really interesting to know Yuzuru's true feelings.

I find it cool, that before, Yuzu was know for being a more "technical" skater. Now, when you take away the technical sides, along with his elegant SP program, you can REALLY see the quality of his skating.

I think what keeps some people from labelling him as an artistic skater is mostly his use of arms and posture that are still not quite ideal even if they have actually improved after the summer. Honestly, I can't see any other reason because he excels in other aspects. But some people is just too picky about these things and because of the crazy TES that he can achieve when in good condition they tend to downplay the quality of his skating overall. Sometimes they can only pick one between the two; if you are relatively weak at the technnical they push the skater's artistic side to make up for it; or if you have crazy TES then well "you are not mature enough". Sometimes it's true, other times this logic is too overused. Some skaters are recognized for both but they are known for it since early on or they get the cred with time. Yuzuru have time for it; he just needs to find a balance and the right programs. We should just be pleased that he is visibly trying to improve himself in other areas outside of jumping in order to become a more all around skater.

Despite the mistakes in his SP, he was in sync with the music this time and it was beautiful. Also, props to the camera operators for doing a good job at getting every moment of his performance from different angles. And guys, let's continue to send Yuzuru good vibes. His condition isn't the best right now and it's reasonable to be concerned for him, but our boy wants to skate and we should give him our support and wish him the best.

Of course I think Yuzu can improve. He is not's Chan's level of skating skills but he never really had low PCS either. I think he is pretty well balanced in both the technical and component side
