Ban on Carolina Kostner Over

I believe the IOC does not have any authority outside of Olympic events. If they took the CONI recommendation and ban Caroline, and if IOC follows suit, she should still be able to pursue a non competitive skating career as a professional and as a coach, choreographer or any other functionary in figure skating.

So far there has been a recommended 4 1/4 year ban for Carolina by CONI. Fines, stripping of medals, and skating federation conspiracy are all speculations.

The length of the bans troubles me considering what the boyfriend received. However, I find it unlikely that Caro would come back next year and compete for the top of the podium. She skated marvelously in Sochi but she struggled most of last season and I think she'd be even less consistent two years older.

And all she had to do to avoid the whole sticky situation was switch her brain on for two seconds and think "wait, if he wants me to lie to anti-doping people, that must mean..."

"... won't forget, can't regret, what I did for love ..."

Sometimes, in love, we don't think straight. We just see what's in front of us and "know" what we feel. Carolina made a poor judgment call in the middle while in love.

She is an elite athlete. She was one before him, she is one after him. She is an elite athlete first and foremost and she should have known better.

How many anti-doping seminars has she been to? What was in the Olympic pledge that she took? None of this disappears just because she gets a boyfriend.

 exactly!

Although I can definitely see and understand why she chose to "cover" in the heat of the moment (especially in the circumstances of a romantic relationship). Still, it's a costly mistake...

Excellent point!!!

I agree completely...

Obviously he didn´t want to take test just because he didn´t feel like peeing in a cup, it is preatty obvious why you wouldn´twant to take the test.

quite true

I'm curious, how would people have viewed her actions, if she had lied for a family member instead - say a father or brother?

The same for me. I'm not judging Carolina as a person for what she did for her boyfriend and I wouldn't judge her if she did it for a family member, too. It would, however, make it slightly more understandable.

Despite that, I do believe Carolina should face repercussions for either scenario since it was first and foremost illegal.

Exactly the same - a totally stupid act which should have repercussions.

That said, as I've said before, I think longer than his ban is a bit much.

Note: Just to explain, if she has done something illegal, of course she should be punished for it. I am agains her having a longer ban than the main culprit, and I do think it wrong to strip her of her medals. I just wonder if people would view her plight and error in quite the same light, or be more understanding of why she did what she did. Just curiosity. :)

I am already sympathetic to her, but I likely would be even more so if it was a family member in a situation of control/dominance over her.

For instance a family member that doubled as coach, might be easier to understand auto pilot obedience.

Or a family member that financially supports them and could in theory cut them off/evict them. Frankly an individual should not be put in that situation, so it is more a problem for the doping patrol, but anyway, someone who has financial control over you is different.

Even if the family member acted as something of an agent or otherwise had a large business role in their lives.

Often times family may have these types of shall we say cross relationships.

Eh, makes no difference, a boyfriend can be just as close to you as a family member, it doesn't change what she did, she lied to a governing body for someone else and yes she should be punished, but not given a harsher punishment than the person who actually doped

Blood is thicker than water. The Italian Olympic Committee is not God, Carolina's father, her brother, or for that matter even her boyfriend.

Isn't ice technically thinner than water, since water expands when it freezes (due to the shape of the crystals)?

Okay, I'm outta here. :slink:

One could argue it that way.

On the other hand, thicker substances generally flow less easily ;)

:hijacked:

Now you went and made me look it up. :)

Blood: 1060 kg per cubic meter
Water: 1000
Ice: 920
Skulls of bureucrats: 2900
