I wonder how accurate this is; I thought at one point Kwan was makeing 6.5 mil a year? Also, I do wonder if Weir is so high; there are conflicting reports. Dorothy Hamil, Katarina Witt might even be up there too not to mention Baiul, Orser and Browning

^It's pretty inaccurate. They obviously can't account for anyone's private investment gains, and I think the added all of Forbes's reportings through the years for Yuna to get 35mill (it should be waaay lower, below Plushenko probably).
Also--Lipinski owns a fair share of high-end property so I imagine she is quite well off as well?

Yes. According to Russian Forbes Plushenko earned cca 10 million dollars since 2006. But he is very popular since 1998.. so I don't know...

It's also difficult to calculate for people who've left the skating scene, like Michelle. At her peak she was one of the highest paid female athletes in America, but how does she stack up now? How are we supposed to even have this information?
They're all guesstimations.
Seriously, I don't even think the people who throw together these lists really put all that much research into it. They probably just assume that people won't know any better anyway.

If they simply add Forbes number then Yuna net worth must be much higher than 35mil.
5 years in Forbes list: 9+10+10+14+16=59mil.
All these specific numbers are questionable. We just know for sure they are all rich, that's enough.

I agree. Weir ostensibly asked for training money on twitter just two years ago and has sold his Faberge egg in the divorce proceedings. Also, I doubt his NBC gig with Tara pays millions.
No. Sorry, but Karne is absolute right, you have less informations. Plushenko has been living all alone in a social apartment in St. Petersburg when he was 11 years old. He moved to that city, because the ice rink closed in Volgograd and he wanted to train with Mishin. The neighbor was an alcoholic man. He often went hungry to train. When his mother moved to him from Volgograd she had no job. They collected bottles thus they could buy foods..

As others have pointed out, this list is definitely of questionable accuracy. It's difficult to imagine an accurate "All Time Richest Figure Skaters" list without Dick Button, for instance. Dick Button not only starred in the Ice Capades and Holiday on Ice, but he also made millions creating his own competitions and shows, such as the World Pro Figure Skating Championships, Challenge of Champions, and numerous other ice shows for TV. Also, he did all this during the skating boom too, which means that people in the U.S. were actually interested in watching skating at the time.

As for Plushenko, I'm not surprised that he came from humbler origins than anyone on this list. Yes, Plushenko started skating with Mishin since he was young, but the fact is that his family couldn't afford to send him to St. Petersburg initially. However, Mikhail Makoveyev, Plushenko's first coach from Volgograd, saw that Plushenko had talent and was the one who helped Plushenko out by arranging him to train under Mishin. When Plushenko first moved to St. Petersburg to train with Mishin, he had to live all by himself in a communal apartment with entire families also sharing the space--if I recall correctly, all Plushenko had was a couch to sleep on at this apartment. Although Plushenko's mother lived with him for awhile, eventually she had to go back to Volgograd because she couldn't find a job in St. Petersburg and Plushenko's family needed the extra income to survive.
Actually, many of the Russian skaters came from very humble origins. Maxim Trankov and Alexander Smirnov were basically homeless when they were training as youths in St. Petersburg. Trankov and Smirnov lived at the ice rink they trained in and had to collect bottles to buy cheap canned foods for years because they couldn't afford anything else.

I doubt that it was ever that high for a single year. According to publicly accessible records, during Michelle's highest earning years she was paid about $900,000 directly from the USFSA. This money, I am pretty sure, came from the ABC television contract in exchange for a guarantee that Michelle would skate in the five ABC shows, Skate America, U.S. Nationals, and the three cheesefests. Long term, it depends on what the athletes do with their money. It was mentioned upthread that Tara owns real estate. (I hope she didn't lose her shirt in 2007.) Sonia Henie invested a lot of the money she made as a movie star in California real estate at a good time. Dorothy Hamill made a bundle, then lost it by bad investments, especially in Ice Capades which went broke.
Some of Michelle's holdings were made public by law when her husband ran for governor of Rhode Island. (He dropped more than 3 million dollars of his personal fortune on the campaign -- but no need to feel sorry for him, he has plenty left.
)I would be very surprised if Mao Asada's accumulated holdings are not in the tens of millions of dollars US. If Yuna Kim lives long enough she will be a billionaire (in $US) some day. Plushenko is the ultimate rags to riches story. Julia Lipnitskaia is another who was born in difficult circumstances and fought her way to success. Brian Boitano seems to have taken care of his money. Peggy Fleming recently sold her beachside house in California for millions.

Mao Asada is a big freaking deal in Japan. If you go to the Ginza district, her face is on a lot of things.
Here's a fun fact, Angelina Jolie, Brad Pitt, Clooney all put their face on something in Japan only. They pay well there.

IIRC, Michelle also earned a great deal from COI ... and did it every year from 1994 to 2006! She is also a Californian ... and by state law, a chunk of the money she earned while a minor had to go into a trust fund for her ... and this during a huge boom in the stock market!

That is correct; I think it was like 25,000 or 50,000 is what I read or heard. So we may be on to something.

Excellent point! The U.S. stock market gained 350% in the five years 1995-1999.
And in 2013 alone, if Michelle started with a paltry $10,000,000 by the end of the year she had 13,000,000.

The infuriating part about that was not only was he begging for training money from his fans on Twitter in the same breath as he was posting about the latest designer handbag he'd just bought, but he also must have known at that point that he had absolutely no intention whatsoever of coming back. What a disgusting con artist.
