2014-2015 GPF Mens Free Skate 12/13

I'm sorry, I just don't feel like digging through the threads to find that discussion, but apparently he said that another skater (Daisuke Takahashi, I believe it was said) skated like a f*g. But I do not follow Kovtun myself, so I have no concrete proof, just repeating what other have said. The thing is, the dislike towards Kovtun is very intense here, and of a totally different kind than towards "Hanyuflation" and whatnot, and I'm really curious as to why. Homophobic comments made in the past would certainly explain a lot.

But then again, here:

he does come as a bit full of himself, so perhaps the reason for the dislike is much more mundane.

I usually just lurk in these threads, but since you're asking, yes the homophobic comments directed at Takahashi are the reason I went from sorta liking Kovtun to thinking he's terrible. I generally don't voice it on forums because I don't like to leave negative comments but him slinging such gross insults at one of my favorite skaters is something I can't overlook.

That said I'm so thrilled with how the Men's skate turned out! I'm upset for Machida but overjoyed for Yuzu and Javier. And I'm starting to like Voronov too =D

Huh? Who of the Rai commentators said that? Bianconi and Secondini always loved him. Maybe the Pedrazzini guy, a technical specialist in ice dance, but still...

I don't know, I don't hear them if I can avoid.
I asked people on that group to whom they were referring, because the horse riding and bowl game ref. - these are sports shown on Raisport ;) - but all I had in response is: the lady who called him a spoiled kid.
Anyway, they were referring to someone in particular. It was not just a generic comment.

During the 2012-2013 GPF, Kovtun wrote a tweet on his personal Twitter saying that Daisuke Takahashi skated like a f**, along with some things that weren't very complimentary. The tweet was written in Russian, and some Russian fans translated the tweet into English and people were understandably very angry. Kovtun may have deleted the Tweet by now, but I definitely saw the Tweet at the time and the angry comments people made about it on Twitter (note: I cannot read Russian so I'm taking the word of the Russian fans who translated the Tweet).

Ok, so it's been deleted off the entire internet and nobody here can show a copy? I think it's time to drop it. Unsubstantiated rumors aren't supposed to be allowed on this site. Not that anyone has to like him (I don't), but SO many young skaters have said dumb things on social media. And even before social media, back in the 90s, skaters said/did the same dumb things. Yagudin got kicked off a Champions on Ice tour for something worse than that. People do grow up at some point (most of them, at least).

How the heck was Hanyus OGM a handout? Chan couldn't deliver even when the Gold was at his door.

Chan handed it out to Hanyu? ;) It's not like that performance was actually olympic-gold quality-wise.

But then that's probably why Hanyu seems to insistent on proving himself. Good that he's got the wherewhitals to actually do it despite the lows.

And thank you, GermaricanMix for the answer regarding Kovtun.

No, I don't think they ever called him that Alba :) the person you're talking about is someone who hates on Yuzuru and sometimes posts on a certain facebook group we both know very well ;)

No I have no idea who that person is, I swear.
In anyway I don't think Max was addressing to someone who writes on FB in television? Plus that ref. about horse riding etc?
Anyway, that's the response I got. I have no idea against whom they were talking about.

I've been lurking for some time and wow, most would root for a potato over Kovtun? People REALLY don't like him. Is it mostly about his off-ice persona or something on-ice as well?

I think there was a feeling last year that the Russian federation favored him unfairly over the popular Menshov, and then he was a little too outspoken and brash when Pluchenko pushed him aside at the Olympics. This year, there is a feeling that he should count his lucky stars for the victories that he was able to squeak out, but his attitude is the opposite. I think he would be more popular with fans if he were more courteous toward his competitors.

Almost a world record with a fall. Just...unbelievable.

Yay Sergei! Go for it! Now all we need to do is get Artur jumping at his best and Gachinski/Voronov/Menshov can go to Euros and Voronov/Gachinski or Menshov can go to worlds! :)

I think he also called his critics sluts or some other deragatory term. There was a thread on it in The Edge.

Wow, what an event. Just catched up. I'm happy for Vornonov (my only correct prediction). Kudos to Hanyu for this exceptional skate (thought he would come in last, apologies).

I like the podium.:cheer:

That said, I wanted to ask if that perceived racism/homophobia thing is the reason Kovtun is so disliked on these boards? I've been lurking for some time and wow, most would root for a potato over Kovtun? People REALLY don't like him. Is it mostly about his off-ice persona or something on-ice as well?

I know nothing about his racism/homophobia tbh. I just dislike his skating, a lot.

He landed everything else and it was a pretty quality performance from him, I feel like the choreography could be a lot of better because there are some parts I'm really meh about but it was quite exciting and the jumps and spins were great, his scoring potential is very high

Same, his posture, lack of connection to the music, flailing arms, meh

I haven't seen the homophobia but apparently on his instagram he uses the n-word a lot and no matter where you're from, we have the internet and at our finger tips, people need to broaden their horizons so I won't excuse that. The only thing I have seen with my own eyes is that picture he post of the Titanic with the caption "The Best Ice Bucket Challenge Ever" which I think is in poor taste

That was so stupid. But it sounds like a kid's joke honestly. How old is he?

Max is very sad
google translating

"I skated today, just as at the last World Cup, and did not understand why I so strongly punished - said Maxim Kovtun. - Assessing put down 10 points. It's a shame. After this ride (skate?) even do not want to."

This petulance & bitterness could be one of the reasons people don't like him! Voronov earned his bronze fair and square.

I'm very very happy with this result
Very sad for Machida, though. I couldn't believe that this was really happening in front of me, it was kinda surreal. Can't bring myself to even care about Kovtun. I mostly want to take a nap between his jumps because I don't see much noteworthy in between. So happy for Voronov, I have more than just a soft spot for this guy, he's just so much fun to watch. Super happy for Javier, he totally brought down the house and deservedly so. Over the moon for and because of Yuzuru, obviously. Personally, for me this night couldn't have gotten all that much better  I'm happy with this, very very happy.

19 and a half...
Sure enough he's as media savvy as Pchiddy, combined with a natural talent to insult people(while I've never seen the homophobic tweet, I sure can't forget the time when he called russian sport fan sluts or something along those line), but he was hated long before that for something he had no control over (beign selected instead of Menshov for Europeans) and for bombing at worlds (something while unexpected, still easy to understand: first world championship with the entire federation hope and expectation on you to get more possible spot for the Olympics at your home- no wonder even his much more experienced companions on the ladies team underperformed ) os I don't really think he cares that much about being nice.
