I really don't understand what' the issue with Ilya? All his programs for Yulia are great programs.
TAT has done a great job with Mao, but I don't even think she works like that anymore.
By the way, she is not an enemy of Eteri. Voronov is with Eteri because of TAT.

Alba:I think main reason why some posters here want Yulia to try new choreographer is b/c he seems to have ton of work with his ice shows.
Correct me if I'm wrong but wasn't one of the reasons why Yulia's Romeo and Juliet FS was done so late due to Ilya's schedule? They did Mulan in time, Yulia was advised to change it and Ilya was busy then, so she had to wait.
Question: If Yulia chooses foreign choreographer, how will they communicate? I understand that her English isn't that great (I know she's working on it but these things take time). I can't imagine a translator being there on ice with them.

I guess she meant Mao doesn't speak Russian and Tat doesn't speak Japanese but they understand each other quite well and Tat has done many good programs for Mao. So if Yulia works with foreign choreographer I guess language barrier is not that huge.

Eteri speaks English, I think. She lived in the States for a while.

I personally do not like Ilya because I feel this year's programa are only trying to mimic SL. They feel very generic. I like Megapolis, but I had a huge expectation and all I got was a new You don't give up on love. Sorry if this offends anyone but that is how I see it.

Actually what I read on the board was that he never had time to choreograph mulan and Yulia tried to put something together on her own for the test skate.

Well, first of all he did two programs not only Mulan, before R&J. They first did Perfect Sense but she couldn't stand that music anymore, then they did Mulan. She had to change Mulan late in August, after the FED officials told her to change. Of course he was busy, but that could have happened with any choreographer though. It's not like others are going to be available for her 24/24, any time she wants, and yet he did a great job with R&J in such a short time. It's not his fault that she could not deliver a clean program. There is nothing wrong with that. Besides, this was the Olympic season, so I think there are more shows during the post Olympic. I don't think Ilya is going to have the same amount of shows this year, not to mention that she has a lot of time now available.

I don't think that's going to be a problem. It's not like they work with the choreographer all the time. I think she work with Ilya for SL a week, at max. They can find an interpreter, and as other mentioned TAT worked with Mao not only as her choreo but also as a coach.

It is a bit murky isn't it...all of these bits and pieces of info. I seem to recall that Ilya made a program and Yulia wound up hating the music. It was from some goofy movie that was French or Italian. Then I also read that Eteri and Yulia put Mulan together themselves as the alternative (Eteri did choreograph Seeafima's SP this year)and went to the test skates with a very underprepared program that didn't go over well.

Ilya's strengths are musical choice and showmanship. Yulia has commented on how she and Eteri benefit from Ilya's ideas about music. He is good at converting music into image. She is has a natural genius for skating musically, as we can see from watching her earliest performances. Ilya adds programmatic elements which are quite effective (an example where she whips back in Megapolis at about 1 minute into the program, and the symbolic arm movements in Schindler's List such as the mother-child symbol). He also packages programs well, such as the kite symbol in Megapolis, his ideas sell well with the public and provide a reference for interpreting the program as with the kite. In short, he supplies a literal dimension, which complements Yulia's intuitive dimension. He also is excellent at structuring music. The best example is in R&J, where the Yann Tiersen composition is incorporatd as a contrasting middle section to Rota's film music. Tiersen's music broadens the experience of love, it is the magical dimension of love, in contrast to the emotional dimension that is Rota. He likely introduced Yulia to Megapolis. I give him at least a B+ for his general contributions, and an incomplete for R&J through no fault of his own.

Still, I would prefer a musical Eteri. A great communicator who would work intensively with Yulia because she values Yulia's uniqueness, someone dedicated to developing Yulia's extraordinary musical intuition artistically. I am thinking along the lines of the student-mentor intensity that is found at the Vaganova academy. Ilya will never do that. There was so much left unexpressed in Megapolis. Yulia would welcome this, she has said she needs more attention from her coaches.

Yulia has only begun to explore her expressive gift. Immersion with a musically gifted teacher will take her to another level. Her influence on many people from every background is profound, for them she is a guru, a buddha. Young people on this thread have written how she has changed their lives. To say nothing of so many who come here every day. The little ones talk about being like Yulia. She is much more than a skater. She deserves every advantage to develop fully, for her benefit and ours.

I don't think that would be the problem.
I've seen videos of David Wilson working with Yuna Kim when she had just come to Canada and couldn't speak English.
He did the moves/gestures etc and she copied them, they expressed through hand movements or facial expressions, when sth went great he high-fived her etc, and the programs show that this worked brilliantly.
I don't think she'll chose a foreign choreographer though. At most an other Russian if she doesn't stick with Ilya.

I also don't see the problem with his programs...:slink:
I mean compared to the other Russian girls, exept for Radionova maybe, I always thought her programs were choreographed way better and meaningfully than the other girls'.

It's a UK, Germany, Sweden and Denmark production. It's not goofy at all, just a very difficult concept to translate into a skating program, especially at Yulia's age. Besides, it suits more to a dance couple rather than a single skater, IMO. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1439572/

She can do that with Eteri. Nobody works with the choreographer all the time in anycase.

Above everything else, everyone working with her must respond sensitively to her personality. Ilya will never do this, and now we know what can happen.
 
I am shocked Yulia is struggling so much as good as she is. I really think the Russian media attention overload is negatively affecting her making her unhappy and it's seeping into her skating. She may need to leave Russia and train in America after this season is over. The media would not bother her here the way it does in Russia.
