State of the U.S. Men's Figure Skating for 2014-15

Does this mean we shall not hear that voice boom out "Go, Alexander" this year? Maybe the crowd could arrange something, then. An all-together shout before Jeremy skates.

No, it's Jeremy's stepfather who shouts. So we will.

Oh, thankyou for the correction. I do not follow Jeremy and I knew it was either his father or his stepfather but I got it quite muddled up.

Sorry to read that about Jeremy. I hope he still skates. Parkinson's is a long, drawn-out disease, so this couldnt' have really come as a shocker. My ex's father died from Parkinson's and it was heartbreaking to see him worsen. You almost wished a peaceful death for him he was suffering so badly. May he skate and honor his father with two heartwarming programs.

Yuka Sato is in Colorado with Jeremy, per his Instagram yesterday -- which would reinforce the report that he still is "set" to compete at Nats.

Nathan Chen is going to play a significant role in the state of US Men's figure skating with his entry into the senior rank along with his quads. He will catch up in strength and power when he grows but meanwhile his talents and ballet training are already and always will be huge advantages and threats to the current field.

I like that he's going for the quad too at his age. He still needs to get the 3axel solid but he's going to be a force to be reckoned with in the future. I think he will end up being a better skater then Nam of Canada he just needs to grow a bit and gain more power. I would have thought he would have have had a growth spurt since last year but he's still small.

You are correct golden411, previous poster has confused Jeremy's stepfather who had a medical issue at 2012 nationals. He is the man that shouts from the audience before Jeremy skates. Abbott's biological father passed away from complications of Parkinson's and other illnesses late last week. I presume that Jeremy is competing at Nationals regardless, because that's what his father would want.

The whole family is in my prayers.

^^I stated this on the previous page during conversation yesterday, I guess it got missed in the reading of the thread. :)

It is always hard when you lose a loved one or a family member regardless of relationship. Maybe he will pull a Joannie (Rochette) AND skate his heart out.

The time is right to win a world medal - Machida and Chan are gone. Hanyu has had health issues. Fernandez hasn't skated all that well. Heck gold is possible though somehow one would assume Hanyu would pull out the gold somehow.

But could he be at contest for a medal?, even whit Machida out and Yuzuru´s still in recover (let´s say Patrick isn´t factoring anyway this season), Jeremy has never been in the top 10 total scores in this season. Jeremy is always strong at nationals, but as we all know Internationals have never been his forte.

Rank Name Nation Score Event
1 Yuzuru Hanyu Japan 288.16 Grand Prix Final (Recovering from surgery)
2 Tatsuki Machida Japan 269.09 Skate America (Retired)
3 Javier Fernández Spain 265.01 Rostelecom Cup
4 Takahito Mura Japan 255.81 Skate Canada
5 Sergei Voronov Russia 252.00 Rostelecom Cup
6 Denis Ten Kazakhstan 249.94 Golden Spin
7 Daisuke Murakami Japan 246.07 NHK Trophy
8 Maxim Kovtun Russia 243.35 Trophée Bompard
9 Michal Březina Czech Republic 241.23 Rostelecom Cup
10 Max Aaron United States 240.22 U.S. Classic

His total best score ever from Worlds 2014 246.35 will put him in 7th place.

His internationals score for 2014-2015 season have been
Skate America 219.33
NHK 229.80

Jason Brown
Skate America 234.17
RoC 235.56

Max Aaron
RoC 212.60
Skate Canada 231.77

Richard Dornbush
CoC 226.73
Bompard 219.27

Nathan Chen
JGP Croatia 208.16

What Jeremy needs to do, and he still may, is to put up one of his brilliant Nationals performances at Worlds. He needs to pull a Denis Ten, who has brought his best at the right times and the right places even as he falters regularly at lesser events. Both extremely talented skaters, different fates. I hope for Jeremy to make his own fate this year.

Jeremy is a question mark this season. He was late getting his programs. We haven't seen a quad attempt. He had no prep events before the GP. He looked under-prepared on the GP.

Last season he was 5th at Worlds, and some argued should have been 4th. He was the reason the US has 3 men's slots at Worlds now, along with Max's effort.

If Jeremy had continued to improve on last season, he would be in contention for a medal if there were mistakes made by the top guys. I just don't know where he is right now with his quads-and his overall tech. It doesn't look like he'll be as competitive as last year......but Jeremy has surprised before.

That's how I see it. The ISU scores are low because he hasn't pulled off national-caliber performances in international competition (with a few exceptions).

But Jeremy might not make the World team this season. US men are a lot stronger in depth than they used to be.

I think with 3 spots, he has a good shot. Dornbush/Aaron/Brown will give him a run for his money (I'm not so sure Rippon or Miner will be a factor, unfortunately for them).

I would agree with Skater Boy in that if there is any good time to bring your A game, its this years Worlds. This applies for every one of the guys. All the top contenders are either out or injured and Javi's being Javi :hopelessness:. This might be alot of the guy's best chance at medaling at Worlds. Jeremy's got as good of a chance as anyone to medal, IF he brings his best performance and IF a couple of the guys falter. Then again, that's quite a bit of "if's" involved. :confused2:

Those are big ifs. With Machida out a podium spot is up for grabs, but I imagine it will go to Ten or one of the Russians (sorry folks, if it's Kovtun).

Agree it will take some big ifs for Jeremy to land on the Worlds podium. I wonder whether even if he skates lights out it will be enough. Last year he had a good long program, and despite getting I think a season's best, was not happy with his marks. I wonder if he does end up at Worlds the same thing could happen.

I think Ten and the Russians have a better shot of medaling.

This. He needs 2 great skates at Worlds. I think that would be enough for the podium this year with Chan out and Machida's sudden retirement. He can't beat a semi-clean Hanyu and Fernandez, but Jeremy should be able to come in front of everyone else if he skates perfect programs with the quad.

Can someone get the number of the highest score Jeremy can get with two clean programs? Thank you in advance
