Thanks, sabinfire. Just watched it and I can now confirm they spent less than 5 minutes in total talking about the costumes. That's what everyone is complaining about? Fluff, yes, but from the comments I read on here I thought it would take up half of the show. Personally, I would have much rather heard them talk about Adam Rippon and Dornbush than sit through Jeremy's program again, but for a first effort (and understanding that we are not perhaps the intended audience), I think NBC did a reasonably good job with the previews shows.

38:40 minute mark: Gannon turns the conversation away from fashion and onto 'final thoughts' for Nationals.

My math has that at over 5 and a half minutes.

Sorry to nitpick, I just had to go back and double check that one.

I thought that this preview show was a great start. They got the main names out and provided a story for the top contenders. If you think about it, tv networks can really dictate the narrative of the sport to the general piblic. Not everyone got mentioned or were referred to in passing but we can wait to nationals to hear about them.

They managed to maintain a good balance of analysis and other lighter issues. I personally would lf wanted more talk about the skaters but they mainly got the gist of what is happening in us skating at the moment.

I would want, in time, is to have commentary from Tara and Johnny which builds excitement. something that can engage the audience and enhance the viewership experience.

I thought that the explanation of program strategies for Jeremy and Jason was a great feature. Good for new viewers so that they can see what will get lots of points, and what will lose points.

I wish the federation and media pay more attention to promising youngsters aiming for the next Olympics. I think the previews are not enough to cover even top U.S skaters. it's a shame that there are not much available latest videos of youngsters on the internet that people can see their performances. Agreed. They did a few 15 second interviews on Youtube, but why not have some more.

I think if they would just put it online, people would look at people's videos.

At the same time, I am not sure paying attention to promising skaters ends very well in the USA. Either we fail to pick the right ones, or we somehow destroy them with attention. I mean Michelle Kwan paid off but. . . well the prediction game is so tricky.

Do you notice someone missing?

I'll give you some clues: he was the reigning Junior World silver medallist, the top qualifier for that year's JGPF, he'd landed a quad the previous month while trashing the competition by 30+ points, and he would go on to not only be the pewter medallist at that Nationals but also the Junior World Champion.

I know I should probably stop caring about this, but it still makes me cross.

I should've clarified my opinion on the youngsters, but have meant mostly young girls. It was hard for me to find latest videos of them unlike Japanese, and Russian juniors. Honestly, I didn't need to search for info on junior-level skaters because the ladies until last season were so amazing. However, things are changed as you know; most of them with great star quality are gone, so I felt urged to find more young girls with star quality that I can stick around to appreciate the sport. I can see that Japanese and Russians are productive in their ways, but I'm not sure of US juniors by just looking at the scores and placements from Junior-level competitions. I was a bit impressed by performances of Amber Glen, and Tyler Pierce at Junior Grand Prix series this season, but except the official videos, there are almost none of videos. If they competed in challenger series and if there is a fancam in at least a crappy definition, I still can be very lucky to watch their performances. They are not stars yet, but have good qualities in their own way to get attentioned, so I felt more media shower would be nice for their development as competitive skaters.

Gotta say I agree. Look at the previous generation - out of Zhang, Nagasu, Flatt and Wagner - Zhang got the most hype and later, it was Nagasu (after 2010). Neither one panned out - well, Nagasu is still trying at least.

Who would have thought in 2008 that Wagner, of all of them, would be the most successful? That's the thing about trying to predict these things.

I did! I always preferred Wagner and saw a fire in her that I didn't see in others. I'm glad I was somewhat right in this case.

This streaming is from a fixed cam that was showing last week's construction of the secondary rink, but it still seems to be up.

Maybe your NBC affiliate was showing something different, but Detroit was showing an infomercial. ... Definitely wasn't skiing, on the local NBC affiliate here.

Belated comment: you are correct that different local NBC stations were showing different programming before the Saturday skating preview. Mine was one of the ones showing skiing. (Freestyle International Dual Moguls from Deer Valley, Utah (HD) The top men's and women's mogul and dual mogul international freestyle skiers come together for the 16 annual FIS Freestyle Ski World Cup.)
