Joshua Farris

Re: Josh
It's better to make mistakes in the SP and bounce back in the FS. I wonder how many places he'll make up? If he skates clean I suspect he'll get a pretty nice slay count.

I think Josh has the highest slay count potential of anyone! Really super excited.

Re Josh's FS in Shanghai:

(1) @pandaatlarge
Joshua said he's got a flu. He is not feeling sick right now, but very tired after his skate. He felt proud of himself for fighting.

(2) Most of Josh's FS was so beautiful, it made me cry. Thank you, Josh, and hugs to you. Hope you get some rest and feel better soon. Hope you did not hurt yourself falling.

I'm still a bit upset about his underwhelming performance at Worlds. I'm glad he fought for it. It just seems with Josh it's always one step forward, three steps back. So frustrating. Here's to next season.

Okay, Josh didn't crack the top 10 BUT I hope to see him next year in Boston as one of the three spots! He is just the most beautiful skater, truly.

OMG, Sam-S ... thank you for this post :).

I do indeed remember the old discussion, LOL, although I had forgotten that you were one of the strong voices. I do remember that Alba was another.
And I do remember that I posted several times before finally letting the question go. And I'm kind of embarrassed :hopelessness: that you remember that I was the one who debated the topic at some length -- I must have been quite the loudmouth.

But I am happy to learn that YL named Josh as one of her favorites. Not b/c I want to gloat, but b/c Josh is one of my favorites, and it is a nice compliment to him that YL not only knows him, but also likes him :yay:.

Side comment:
Interesting that she refers to Josh by his last name, but to Yuzu and Javi by their first names. I'm not complaining, but maybe it means that YL and Josh have not had a chance to "click" on a personal level yet. Hope that they eventually do. Josh said that Han Yan's limited English does not prevent them from understanding each other as friends :).

YL and Josh were at Junior Worlds at the same time, she was 1st in 2012 when he was 2nd and then he was 1st in 2013 when she was 2nd. I'm sure they crossed paths on the Junior Circuit at other times as well.

You're preaching to the choir ;). This exact history at Junior Worlds was the major point I had made at the time of the previous discussion re YL and Josh .

My position back then was disbelief at those who thought it very possible that YL did not know who Josh is (and that she did not know that his 2013-14 FS music was Schindler's List).

That is why I appreciate :) Sam-S giving the update that YL has said that she does know Josh.

We had some pretty high expectations coming into Worlds, but Josh will do better next year! :yay:

It was encouraging to see the performance stay together after the fall on the quad, and also Josh consciously doing a single toe loop to avoid Zayaking. It shows that he is focusing out there, even if there are mistakes. I hope next year he has fewer injuries/illnesses/etc to contend with so he can focus on training and making his quad more stable in competition.

That's what I love best about his skating- even when he's having a bad outing, I just can't give him less than 100% of my attention. So captivating, so charming, and here's hoping for a fantastic season next year!!

Sorry to hear he was feeling under the weather but fought through instead of falling apart. At least he has his 4CC's performances this season to show what he is capable of, so he should be proud of his progress.

Looking forward to next season, and hopefully he will be one of the three going to Boston next year. I'm planning to go next year and hope to get to see him skate live.

From Team USA post-FS quotes:

Joshua Farris (11th place, 73.52 + 149.52 = 223.04)

(on his mentality today) I have had a lot of good skates and a lot of bad skates so after I skated my short program I talked to my coaches Christy (Krall) and Damon (Allen) on the bus. Christy sat next to me and I starting crying a little bit. She shared some incredible words of wisdom and really helped me prepare for today. I didn’t want to replicate what I’ve done in past competitions after a bad short program. It was far from perfect but it was a step.

(on next goal) The number one thing I need to work on is my mental strength.

Cheering you on as you keep taking steps forward, Josh!

I just hope he didn't hurt his shoulder further, that fall on the 4T must have really hurt. His performance was still beautiful though, and his smile at the end was everything.

I also don't think he made one step forward and two steps back... there will always be ups and downs. For everyone and in every situation. It was clear he wouldn't always skate like he did at 4CC. But if you compare this skate to seasons before, he didn't give up on the jumps and fought for every rotation and landing, even if the fall must have taken a lot of energy out of him. That's a great improvement and it will serve him well in future seasons. He was also still giving it 100% in the performance aspect, and I appreciate that a lot. As did the audience. He's on the right path, not only great skates proof that.

AND he listened to my screaming at the live stream and did 3Lz-1T instead of Zayaking. :p

Josh, while more low-key than many skaters (including ones I tend to like), has that X-factor. Usually when I'm watching a competition without knowing the results, I get so nervous about placements that it's often hard to concentrate on the program. But even with mistakes, Josh captured by attention, didn't let me deteriorate into OMG-land-this-jump mode. That StSq was everything.

Christy sat next to me and I starting crying a little bit.
 Oh no, Josh... they're going to accuse you to being emo again! (Even though this increases your appeal with a, er, segment of the fandom. ;))

I guess that broken blade really did bend his soul...

I nearly cried at the end of his program because I knew he would be really upset by it all :(

After the super-hard fall, he was way off the music, and I was really resigned to him not making the StSq perfect. But he got back on it, and it was, as always, enchantingly perfect.

It could have gone the way of NHK, but he didn't let it. This will be a stepping stone toward better performances in the future. Keep at it Joshua. :cheer2:

Aww, don't cry. It's his first Worlds. 11th is a perfectly respectable finish. :) Blade problems, illness, ect. happen. And we could see him fighting for it, never giving up. Even with an off night on the jumps, the program (surprisingly) didn't suffer all that much.

Btw, I probably shouldn't make this joke, since it's rather dark-spirited (and I love Team Japan!), but we need something to lighten up the atmosphere here. Josh might not have helped keep the three spots (thankfully they were kept anyway), but he did make his own contribution: His 0.3 over Kozuka that nixed Japan's third spot. Next year, there will be one less Japanese man to contend with, and if the USFSA has any sense they'll be thanking Josh for this rather than angry at him for "only" being American #3. It's so... sad and absurd that I don't know if I should cry for Team Japan or just gape awkwardly.

I can't imagine USFS being mad at Josh. He had a hard time at this comp but he's already proven what he can do, and he has his own special way of drawing people in. I'm sure USFS will continue to support him just as I'm sure he'll learn & grow from this experience.

Mini-video recapping the U.S. men's free skates, from Jason's takeover of the USFS Instagram account:

Josh is no dummy: b/c the screaming had an Aussie accent, he recognized ;) the source as his Twitter supporter from Down Under and paid attention, LOL.

For me, Josh's skating has the X-factor in large part because his emotion is organic and subtle, not in spite of those qualities. A perfect example of less is more, IMO.

And I do find it endearing that he was not self-conscious about saying that he had cried a bit.
And that he has such strong relationships with Christy and with Damon.

I guess your comment was intended to be more about Team Japan than about Josh?
But I agree with others that USFS would not be angry with Josh even if Team Japan had kept three spots.
