Can Chan be on the top again?

Yeah, I'm okay with that! Show the test skate! Don't be sketchy about it. These are Olympic spots and skaters are being denied the experience when they don't even get to see how the other skater did or have a chance to compete against them.

The biggest thing that irked me about Kovtun and Voronov not getting to go instead of Plushenko was that they didn't even get an opportunity to compete for the spot because Plu avoided Euros. It makes no sense that Kovtun beating Plushenko at Nationals was negated by his Euros performance, and Voronov skates amazing at Euros but is out of consideration because he lost to Plushenko at Nationals (and that itself was dubious, given Plushenko's abysmal FS). If Plu went to Euros and beat Voronov/Kovtun, or if they had an aired test skate (or at least allow people to film it and post it) with Voronov/Kovtun/Plushenko all competing for the spot, I would have been 100% okay with it.

Unless it still showed blatant favoritism. . . which likely would still happen, but at least we would be informed about what we are complaining about. It seems my cynicism is showing again.

I felt the need to dig up Patrick's old 2012 World's free skate. The reaction of the Eurosport announcers to his score is just priceless.

I agree that Takahashi should have won the FS too with PCS on par with Chan (around 90 points). Hanyu was new on the scene so his PCS (and the fall) prevented him from winning the FS. Chan's 2nd quad saved him, by granting an extra 4-ish points in base value that he would have otherwise lost doing only a triple... and the lack of a 2nd axel was made up for with the massive GOE on his two quads.

But note that the Euro guys did at least admit that they felt Chan should have won overall... something which to this day most Chan bashers still whine about.

Exactly... I mean, after Russian Nationals it was evident that the judges were going to give Plushenko insane PCS regardless of how he skated (a luxury which Kovtun and Voronov did not have). But at least we would have been able to compare the performances.

Put it this way. If the test skate was a re-dux of Russian nationals FS, and everyone saw it, there's no way the Russian Fed could have justified sending Plushenko without exhibiting blatant favouritism -- and there goes their Sochi meal ticket (since Plushenko is a face of the Games and money-maker and Kovtun/Voronov is a nobody by comparison). So rather than risk that, they did a closed door test skate. It's naive to think Kovtun or Voronov ever had a shot at going to Sochi, even if Kovtun came 2nd at Euros and if Voronov had defeated Plushenko at Nationals. I don't buy the "Plushenko was unprepared for Euros" excuse either... it's obvious he didn't compete at Euros for the same reason Kovtun/Voronov didn't compete against him in an open door test skate.

Oh, please. Hanyu could improve and improve and people would still attempt to discredit him, as if he's giving himself the scores. And to say a skater isn't challenging themselves or attempting to improve is outrageous and just as disrespectful. The fact that Patrick can't even frame his opinions in a neutral or constructive light (ya know, if he is supposed to be so much of a better skater, maybe he should give Hanyu and others an actual reason to look up to him) speaks volumes, frankly. He says he feels he has more to offer to the sport? It's funny. He can teach Hanyu to skate better but Hanyu wouldn't be able to teach him humility. :p

No, but he has recycled programs many a time, and is doing so this season as well, even as he blathers on about wanting to challenge himself with new styles. And Yuzuru & Javier have improved as well, doing transitions that most of the competition wouldn't attempt at all. But he wouldn't know that and can't comment on their programs with any authority, because he only watched their jumps.

Again he didn't say he never saw their whole programs. He skipped to the jumps upon replaying their performances.
In what way is he recycling? He's performed his LP once (and it stands as a strong LP already) and is revamping it as we speak. Seriously, the season hasn't even started yet.

They certainly didn't say Chan should have won overall. They said "I hope there is gonna be some kind of inquiry. Takahashi surely deserved the gold".
Also if you are referring to just when Chan gets his marks. They are hella shocked and don't say that he should have won overall. They say " I could take it that he won overall", a very reluctant "could take" as well.

He also said he did not watch the World Championships except Ice Dancing. So he never indicated he watched them in their entirety.

It's a given that Chan couldn't watch the men at Worlds 2015 without bias because he firmly believes he is superior to them. How could he return to competition if he didn't think that way? :rolleye:

Did you watch the World Championships?

I will be deadly honest. I did not watch the men’s event. The only event I watched was the ice dance because of Kaitlyn and Andrew and all of them. I did go back on YouTube and skim through Javier’s program and Yuzu’s program – and that in itself says a lot – that I skimmed through them. Not because I did not like them. I love Javi’s jumps and Yuzu’s triple Axel. I admire them and I admire a lot of elements of their programs but that is just what it is. I literally fast forwarded to their biggest jumps and then stopped watching.

And he is recycling "Steppin' Out" for his SP which he used in exhibitions and is pretty close in style to "Take 5." I'd like to see him try something that isn't classical or jazzy. And Javier's SP was certainly a new style for him but again...he didn't watch that so he would never know. When will Patrick do a rock program or anything out of his comfort zone? I won't hold my breath.

And I cannot believe that yet another thread has been hijacked for a certain someone to complain about Plushy going to Sochi. Oh, yes I can.

OMG, CSG! Leave alone Plushenko! You know every details about Plushenko's last years, but you do not want to take into consideration nothing.... You need to talk about Chan's interview...

...but, well, can you see Patrick Chan pulling off something that's not classical or jazzy? Wouldn't it be like Javier trying something lyrical/elegant? I mean, in a perfect world, we'd like to see them try and succeed... but it might be outside their capabilities. And there's nothing wrong with that, per se. Many skaters aren't very versatile. Javi's Black Betty was certainly a (nice) change, but it's still in the "fun" vein.

And yes, what the heck is Plushenko doing in Patrick Chan's thread? Did they comment on each other recently? If not, I'm taking my  and leaving.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QuJfGH4bFTM&feature=youtu.be&t=461 At the very end, "I can take that he's won overall... I can't take that he's won the free." Although the clip you played is much more explicit.

I think it was very brash of the Euro guys to say Takahashi won overall, when the << quad in the SP was worth about as much as a deduction as Chan's failed 2A. And from a TES score standpoint, Chan and Takahashi were essentially tied in the FS (88.56 for Chan and 88.16 for Takahashi). Takahashi was much cleaner in the FS in terms of how the performance, but Chan had greater GOE on his jumps which made up for the fall. Chan's opening quad scored over 2 points higher than Takahashi's quad, his loop was a full point higher, etc. The reality is, even if Chan got 84 points of PCS, he still would have won. And honestly, overall, Chan did deserve to win, even though the FS was clearly Takahashi's... figure skating is TWO programs, not the FS.

He could be returning to competition because he wants to compete and still feels he has more to offer the sport?

I don't think you can ascertain his motivations for watching or not watching the men at Worlds 2015.

I think Hanyu has improved a lot actually and he should be credited with higher PCS scores. Unfortunately, like Chan, he is being credited with insanely high scores when he messes up. There's no way his SP at Worlds should have been placed ahead of Fernandez's, and I can't believe (or rather, can believe) people were trying to justify a 95 score with a UR fall.

Isn't it possible that Patrick is basically up-to-date on Fernandez's and Hanyu's programs from this season -- without having watched their entire programs at Worlds?

I do recall that Patrick spent some time at the Cricket Club (for his own purposes) at some point during the season.
I believe a photo of Patrick with Javi was on social media then.
Seems plausible to me that Patrick -- in person -- saw Javi training his programs then.

I don't remember whether Hanyu would have been at the TCC when Patrick was around.
But even if not .. why is it assumed that Patrick had not looked at any videos of their programs before Worlds??

Even if he is up to date on their programs, that doesn't excuse his negative comments about them. As I said, Javi and Hanyu's LPs were their typical style, but their SPs were much different from stuff they've done previously.

No, and that's fine, but then he shouldn't be claiming he is going to try new styles when he's just putting out more of the same. It's just another example of his tiresome hypocrisy. And his particular comment about Javi was that he keeps doing "Chaplin"-esque programs. I don't see anything remotely Chaplin-like about Black Betty.

I think he's referring to the freeskates. It's like saying that Osmond needs to stop doing coquettish, Mambo programs - we're really just referring to her SP since she obviously mixes things up in her LP. Or like saying Polina needs to stop doing princess/fairy programs, when her SP last year wasn't princessy.

The big umbrella of "fun" programs, like I said. Javi isn't doing something lyrical, balletic, or "dark/dramatic/intense." So if you want to be a really harsh critic, you can say he still hasn't stepped that far outside the box. (Don't get me wrong--I don't think stepping out any further would be a good idea. Javi Swan Lake could just give us nightmares.)

I agree it's a pot and kettle situation, considering Chan's own recycled programs and moderate (at best) versatility. But... judge the message, not who speaks it. If only perfect skaters could criticize other skaters, then us forum people might as well as stop typing. :)
