Jason Brown

Thx, Newbie. Very enjoyable video.

I actually wish that they had asked Jason whether he has ever studied Japanese ... and b/c his answer would have been "Yes," I wish they had asked him to speak some Japanese.

Curious whether this show relies on sheer serendipity to stumble upon characters who turn out to be good television -- or whether the video crews sometimes know in advance who they will "find."
Can't decide what I think the circumstances were in Jason's case.
If Jason were a premeditated subject, I hope the producers would have researched him sufficiently to know to ask him about his Japanese studies.
(And LOL, I think the always-lovely Kori would have thrown on some lipstick before the camera started rolling.)

Don't get me wrong, if something lighthearted such as the Jason "discovery" were staged, I would have no problem with it. And I would enjoy the video just as much.

Cute how Kori "bragged" on Jason as the U.S. champion, etc. Again, nothing wrong with that. Just cute.

The hair "bun" tucked under his cap jumped out at me too. I like the look :).

I was wondering as well if we would get to hear him speak Japanese. My guess was he was either to brain dead tired from traveling to even try. . . or the producers thought it was not good enough to be worth broadcasting (I have no idea how particular the Japanese are about pronunciation and such - some cultures are more so than others). I am guessing too tired is the most likely answer.

Re: "I also hope they learn to put the glasses back on ..."
Not sure to whom you are referring.
It's the responsibility of the producer(s) to be mindful of continuity, so it would be something for the producers to learn.
But not the responsibility of subjects such as Jason and Kori, who are not going to be involved in the editing process.

I do think it would be slightly more professional of Jason and Kori to think of stuff like putting glasses back on. It helps with continuity, and no reason the can't do little things to make the lives of other easier. Some producers may not like the result and might just say "ax the stuff without glasses" so it could result in a shorter segment. No there is nothing wrong with the way it is, but it does give weird fans like me something to dissect - sometimes you don't want that, some people care more than others.

Jason is sorta entering a point where being good on camera is part of the job, and knowing about things like editing is a good thing to know. I am sure everyone involved wants him to look good and give more people the chance to fall in love with him. Taking the few seconds to put glasses back on to help with continuity is just a little thing he could do to maybe make a few other people's life a bit easier. The easier he is to work with, well the more likely people want to work with him again.

What I find amazing is that he seemed to understand everything they said. I know he has studied Japanese but wasn't it just for a year or so?

Agree to STRONGLY ;) disagree.
I do not consider Jason/Kori any less "professional" or less "easy to work with" b/c they did not do the producer's job for her/him.

(If the producer actively had made a reasonable request of Jason regarding his eyeglasses or anything else, and Jason had refused to comply, that would be another story.)

When I see a continuity issue in a piece featuring Person X, I never think, "I would have expected X to be more media-savvy/media-friendly. X dropped the ball by not anticipating how to help the producer/editor."

But I might think, "Oops, the producer did not think ahead -- and/or could not figure out a way around the issue in the edit room."

I'm not a professional producer, but I have worked with a lot of them.
And I think they would be the first to say that the responsibility is 100% or 200% their own. I do not believe that they would think one bit less of anyone like X who did not think from the POV of the producer/editor.

IMO, if the producers have any sense at all, their desire to feature X again (or not) would have absolutely nothing to do with X's foresight (or lack thereof) re continuity.

So happens that Jason is studying communications, so if he happens to take an interest in such things, that's great.
BUT equally fine if he does not (as long as video production is not part of his own academic focus).

Found something interesting that I wanted to share with y’all -

Hmm, did he just inadvertently give away one of Jason’s programs for next season? ;) Oooh, I hope it is what I think it is!!

Thanks for the videos! That ending with Yuzuru was too cute!

It sounded like maybe they dubbed in the Japanese part after the interview was taped? I don't know if that's what they usually do on the show. But at the beginning of the video, you can hear the guy with the microphone calling out to Jason in English as he approaches him and Kori.

OK, I'll bite: what could "Scent of love" be?

And thanks to all for posting the Japanese TV show and the translation of the commentators; too cute!:p

Based on a cursory Google search, Scent of Love was the name of a 2003 South Korean movie and a 2010 Taiwanese drama. Could be either one, or could be something random that isn't referencing his new SP at all. Time will tell!

FWIW, I found what looks like the main theme from the Taiwanese TV show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJQews1_Ylg

Again we could be barking up the completely wrong tree. But it's the offseason, and I'm bored, and this seems like as good a use of time as any.

EDIT: And papagena beat me to it! So sorry for the repetition.

It would! I kinda hope it's the Taiwanese one - it seems like there are good places for jumps whereas this seems very repetitive.

I kinda do too...if for no other reason than it fulfills my wish for a skater to choose some recent Asian pop music.

In the interest of completeness, here's the theme from the 2003 Korean movie:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U8tAvJ50Gmw

I'm having trouble believing it's this one! The movie seems to be a variation on the Love Story plot (among many others): boy meets girl, girl gets cancer, etc. Here, the girl gets pregnant and has to choose between having the baby or getting treatment. The movie was screened at the Cannes Film Festival. In what is either a creepy coincidence or an even creepier casting choice, the female lead died of cancer in 2009.

PS Sung Si Kyung is a very successful South Korean actor and singer. He did this film a year or two after he won a big singing contest and became pretty much an instant star.

The last thing I linked to makes it sound like there may be other pieces from the same drama, so I guess we'll see! What I like about this piece is that it's very accessible and kind of universally "pop" so it doesn't really matter what the lyrics are. But looking at the video it looks like there's a lot of angsty love, so maybe we will get a Rohene / Jason take on that theme.

Or maybe scent of love was just to throw us off the scent (sorry)! ;)

ETA ooh I hope it's not that one, deetrakt! Although I have to say that I can't be objective about the music given the visuals.

Not that I know anything about anything but the Taiwanese one strikes me as very "Rohene". He seems to like working with pieces where the drama is built in to the music and seems to do better with them - eg, people in general preferred T&I yo Juke last year.

Gosh if any of his team reads this forum they will probably laugh at us speculating!

Scent of Love is also the name of a piece from The Piano soundtrack. http://youtu.be/wCvquy_BXeU

If that is what it is, it would be a total 180 from Juke.

Thanks, for this and the other links.

I'm glad for the information about the Korean/Taiwanese movie, but "the Piano" is also one of the most depressing movies ever, IMO. So either way it will be 180 degrees.

So now, as a counterbalance, I expect to see a "peppy" LP:biggrin:

He got ambushed by the camera in the airport terminal when they'd just got off the plane. I'm going to give him a pass on forgetting to put his glasses back on. Heck, I'm impressed his brain was even running at half-speed - I certainly wouldn't expect him to go, "Now, I wonder how they'll cut this..."

What I find amazing is that he seemed to understand everything they said. I know he has studied Japanese but wasn't it just for a year or so?

I have a feeling they either had a translator or the questions were asked in English then re-translated back to Japanese. Reading and writing Japanese is one thing, but man, let me tell you - there's no faster way to be brought down a peg or two than to try and have a conversation with a native speaker. They speak at the speed of light! And then you're kind of fumbling for the right articles and stringing together fudged sentences and...fffffffffffffffffft. :o:

Ooooooooooh! I don't have time to listen to all the links now (got to scramble back to work!) but I hope it's something gentle and romantic. We haven't seen enough of that from him yet.

Also, if I was a super famous figure skater, I would be the worst troll. I would scroll through and be all, "Hehehe, they think I'm skating to this, time to drop a hint in a totally different direction!".

I like the music from "The Piano" (depressing or not), has some nice nuances that I think Jason and Rohene can do a lot with. I suppose we'll see.

(I did see Rohene's video from U.S. Open Professional Figure Skating Championships - he's such an artiste. I loved his yoga poses on the ice!)
