Yuzuru Hanyu: 2014-15 Season

Hi everyone, I spent some time last night creating English subs for the translation online to Believe for Yuzuru's performance. It really is a beautiful piece and I enjoy watching the program even more after watching it with the translation. I mainly used the translation here but I did make a few edits so that the English made it a bit more sense. I'm not fluent in Japanese but hopefully there aren't any huge translation errors. Here's the video online, I just added subs for the lyrics.

Thank you for taking the time and effort to do this. I really appreciate it :)

Thanks a lot for making such an effort to provide us with such a nice translation! It makes me love this program even more the more I know of the background of the music! How I wished I could see some of his steps fully, the cameraman focused on yuzu's face a bit too much!!! (Yea, I know Yuzu is handsome and hot though)

Wow...so it's a love song? I wonder what he is thinking as he skates it with such passion? Does he have a special someone?

Having subs makes all the difference in enjoying the program so thank you so much for your work. I really don't mind the color of the costume at all. I'm not a fan of the feminine touches, but I know that's what Yuzu likes so it's OK. Beautiful skating.

Haha:laugh:… One of the things I thought about “Believe” is the refrained music line starts with a word “Ha-na-sa-na-i”(離さない)(about 1:28- https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q7ceRXT_LeA ). The word “Ha-na-sa-na-i” is a very strong and active word of love. This image is like “(I hold you and) I won’t let you go.”. Here’s one of highlights of this song, so he seemed to have so poured his energy here, two times both. His expression including facial felt emotional and sweet sorrow more and more. (second time ’Ha-na-sa-na-i.” after 3A was more…)

I suppose, in this performance, the love feels like something universal rather than something individual, especially considering the background of this song (like the earthquake) ;)

my guess would be this song expresses his love for fs and his love for his hometown?

Thanks!!! You

This is a great performance and the eng subtitles really add a whole new dimension for me.

OT: Pardon my ignorance but why are so many of the vocal phrasings in part English and Japanese? I'm not questioning the translation at all but my question is why does she sing in both Japanese and English so frequently? Are some phrases not translatable or is it more for the purpose of phonetics in relation to the rhythm.

This is just pure curiosity on my part :)

Maybe it's because che'nelle isn't a Japanese speaker? I don't know

I think so.
We can always see how strong His love for his hometown is. For example, recently campaign video “Tour de Tohoku” www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJrDbGMMWpY. It really reflected his thought. This time, he seemed more sincere and earnest:).
At the same time, he devoted himself to delivering his heart to each fan, each person. I felt strongly that way:).

It's a Jpop thing. They will scatter English words in a song like salt and pepper. I find it annoying when it doesn't fit...but this time it was ok. (maybe the presence of Yuzu has softened my views).

That makes sense. I'm not familiar with Jpop so shame on me. Thx

I really liked the placement of the 3a. The way he held his free leg so low to the ice and let out that nice expression with his upper body created a nice contrast making it a very very nice and subtle exit from a very difficult element. Those are the little things people connect with IMO.

I don't know why I liked this one instantly while it took some other of his 'slow' EX a lot of time for me to like. But I just 'feel' this one a lot. On a technical note, his spread eagles are getting better and better.

Also, thank you Faoi organizers for picking a singer who can SING ON KEY again this year. Wooohoo!
Long live the Half Australians! (Che'nell and Sarah)

Yes. 3A at “Believe” was wonderful. Seeing his 3A, I really feel that the great technic isn't the end in itself. It leads to the great expression and the sharing his emotions or so with us. And yuzu can make the difficult technic look so easy. I love it.

I actually think it's really prevalent in Asian pop culture, you also see it a lot in kpop and Cantonese pop.

I remember watching a documentary once, I think in my Asian studies class. In it there was a Japanese modern dancer who was struggling to get recognized in Japan. He said to change that he went to France, gained recognition there, and then he started getting recognized in Japan. If I remember correctly he said that once you're "accepted" by western culture then it's easier to be accepted or popular in Japan for your art.

Taking that into account I feel like English lyrics sprinkled into Asian music is an attempt to introduce a bit of western culture to gain popularity.

As for Che'Nelle, when I first listened to her music during the show I got the sense that she grew up speaking English or lived in an English speaking country. Her English in her music is much more natural that what you typically hear in Asian music.

What exactly is "Jpop"? Is it short for Japanese pop and that's what people call it? Kind of like commericials are called CM's?

Kpop does it too (and can be just as nonsensical), lol.

I’m thinking about the announcement of GPS entry and getting a little bit nervous:unsure:…Is it next week?

Please let it be Skate America and TEB this season and Skate Canada and CoC next.
