Just my two cents, but I must say that I don't agree at all.
Nothing inherently tacky with photo shoots of this kind, IMHO -- whether with athletes, actors/actresses, anyone else -- as long as the specific clothing/make-up/hair/setting/props/etc. are not tacky.
If it was a male skater dressed in a tux doing a photoshoot, would you also say it was tacky idea? Just something to think about.
You're over thinking things. Nothing wrong with doing a shoot like that. It took her just about a few hours during a vacation period that she otherwise would not have been skating anyway.
Yeah, I don't see the problem with doing a photo-shoot either - it's not like this is the slippery slope to becoming addicted to showbiz... There's been no hint that she's been shirking any training or anything. (shrug)

As I said, I am probably just being over-protective.
It's just that I was worrying that the split with Svetlana Veretennikova, and the apparant breakdown in the choreographic relationship with Stéphane Lambiel, might have set Liza's preparations for the coming season back. And, hence, I was worried that these media commitments might get in the way of her getting things back on track.
With Mao back in the picture, Liza is going to have much tougher competition than last season. So, I want her to be as prepared for the new season as possible.
As I am sure we all do.

:agree: And aside from the PR/promotional value for the skater, I see multiple side benefits in exchange for a small amount of time:
On a hard-nosed practical level, a photo shoot gives the skater an opportunity to work with creative professionals with expertise in wardrobe/fashion/styling; hair; and make-up. Any of whom could turn out to be a source of informal tips/ideas/inspiration that could enhance the skater's look for a competitive program in future. You never know when a casual conversation will resonate later.
Not to mention the sheer fun of an experience/perquisite that the average person on the street never will have (along the lines of Ashley Wagner attending the Oscars).
As Tessa kept saying at a V/M character-based magazine shoot (in 2013), "Lucky us. Lucky us."
Plus Tessa noted that the collection of beautiful photographs that were taken would be nice keepsakes for her family and Scott's.
 to all of this.Well, this was done a while back, was it not? Aren't you getting your timelines quite mixed up? When did the split with Svetlana Veretennikova happen - surely that wasn't recently? And I don't think there's a "breakdown" in relations between Team Liza and Stephane - whatever messing with the programmes Mr Mishin might be doing. I even believe there was some talk of going back to him - maybe in regards to Petrov? I forget - but regardless, I don't think they are at daggers drawn.
And honestly, I'm not sure there is reason to be so... alarmist, for lack of a better word. Yes, I know you are concerned about Liza, but I sometimes think people forget that she IS reigning GPF, Euros and Worlds champion. Presumably they are doing something right, and I don't know why we must leap to the conclusion that everything is now going to pot, and will henceforward be an unmitigated disaster. Why not take some joy in what Liza has achieved?
Personally, I said on this very thread before this season that I had not lost faith in Liza (although I never even dreamed of what the coming season would bring!), and I certainly see no reason to lose faith now.
I admit, "Tacky" wasn't the right word to use, but I couldn't think of an alternative way of describing it at the time. With hindsight, maybe "unnecessary" would have been a more suitable word to use.
Necessary or unnnecessary, many famous figure skaters (including Mao) have done numerous fashion photoshoots (and simply "artistic" photoshoots with them dressed in their own clothes) during their career, and it has not hindered their success in any way. Seems that Carolina has done only a few, but that may be because figure skating has not been so popular in Italy. Have you never seen such photoshoots with other skaters, or you just worry so much about this particular photoshoot because it's Liza? And, hence, I was worried that these media commitments might get in the way of her getting things back on track.

To be honest, I haven't a clue when the split with Veretennikova happened. All I know is that I only found out about it about a month ago.
Sorry if I sounded alarmist. I didn't mean to be.
And don't worry, I'm not losing faith in Liza. Hey, if I can keep the faith during those couple of seasons in the wilderness, I think I can keep it after that dominant season she just had!
I do expect Liza to be winning quite a few competitions this season. However, it is going to be a lot harder for her to repeat the remarkable achievement of dominating the whole season.
Last season, Liza's only real competition came from Radionova and Miyahara. But, next season, we have to add into the mix the skaters that sat out last season (mainly Asada and Sotnikova). We don't know how long it will take them to get back into the swing of things. But once they do, it is going to become an extremely competitive season, with perhaps half a dozen fighting for the wins.
So, that is why I do not want Liza to risk getting way-laid. I want to see her starting the season strong to show the opposition that she is going to carry on where she left off, and hence demoralise them. Because if she doesn't, the wiley Asada will use all her experience to seize the advantage in the mental battle early on. And we all know how much of this sport is in the head.
You can tell I like both of these skaters a LOT, can't you?![]()
Oh, how I'm looking forward to this season! It is going to be so exciting!

Goodness gracious, did everyone in here take silly pills?
(I was literally laughing my head off when I read that sentence!)It's a single photoshoot, and I found it very apt - for the Princess, of course, is growing into a fine Queen to reign beside the King. She was the Queen of the season and to my mind the only true Queen skating has.

My only complaint about it was the dress - it was too short to my taste, she ought to have had a full-skirted regal gown to go with the cloak. And the makeup was a little heavy-handed - Liza's face is beautiful enough.

When you have stunningly beautiful athletes with stunningly beautiful bodies, it is natural that these sorts of shoots take place.

Liza is hardly the only skater to do a photoshoot - why, they had Jason dressed up a blues singer with a harmonica at the start of the season, and had him in all manner of cliche bluesy poses and shots. And the King himself must have done a hundred photoshoots.
One photoshoot does not mean that Liza is going to go off the rails. I am sure there are many more photoshoots of our Queen to come.
Well, just so long as they don't get in the way of her training, or give her an ego, then I'm not complaining!

ah no I wasnt trying to defend the programm or anything. (& definitely your comments are always balanced & not to who I referred to :thumbsupMaybe. I think though saying that people are jealous of Liza doesn't change the fact that something feels off about this program as it stands today. At least to my eyes it's a bit conflicted in its identity. Like..she wants to move in a new direction but she's taking the same roads to get there. For me the music cuts are frantic and a bit offputting. I'd rather she just skate to one song and build the program up around it instead of creating artificial changes. To me...the music seems to change while Liza's interpretation doesn't really. It's an odd contrast at times.
As I said in another thread. I don't know why she wants to change anything after last season's success. There is something to be said of just being yourself and playing to your strengths. Then again...maybe she has a vision that hasn't been realized yet or one that people like myself are slow to see.

hwell:
:
Ekaterina Bobrova did one recently, and so did Elena Ilinykh (that one we have yet to see). Adelina Sotnikova too, of course - she has done several (recently, that is). I think Yuna did quite a lot of photoshoots/advertising even when she was still competing. Lambiel did some photoshoots while he was still competing too - he has done quite a lot of them after he retired from competitive skating despite being no less busy with skating than he was while competing (shows, training to stay fit, coaching, his own school, choreographing for himself and other skaters). Weaver/Poje did a photoshoot before the Olympic season. I remember Savchenko/Szolkowy doing one - there was even a calendar with that photoshoot. Volosozhar/Trankov have done several - also in years when they were competing. And the list goes on.ETA: just off the top of my head, I have seen fashion photos recently of Maia Shibutani, Papadakis and Cizeron, Mao Asada, Daisuke Takahashi, Tessa Virtue etc.
Stephane Lambiel about working with Liza:
http://web.icenetwork.com/news/2015/07/15/136789880
'Icenetwork: You recently spent a week working with 2015 world champion Elizaveta Tuktamisheva on her new short and long programs. Can you share with us your thoughts on this collaboration?
Lambiel: I really enjoyed working with Liza. She's not only the strongest technician at the moment, but she also has a fierce fire in her heart. You can see in her eyes how competitive she is. Strong personalities are important for our sport. We have worked on both a short program and a free skate. I can't reveal the music for the short, but the free is set to Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt suites.
Her coach, Alexei Mishin, is quite involved in the creation of his skaters' programs. I wish he would give them more freedom. But it's his method, and I respect him immensely. The work with Liza was very enjoyable. We spent a lot of time together outside the rink as well: went to the pool, walked by the lake in Montreux. By the end of the week, we had two strong programs that were both challenging in some aspects, yet highlighted her strengths. I look forward to seeing her performances this season.'
Stef knows Mishin very well....Mishin doesn't tell Liza what to wear (although he does give the final "yes" or "no"). That is mostly between her and her dress designer. However, I'm not really a fan of Maxim Sokolov's designs.Gez... At this rate I am a bit doomed about Liza's new costume and SP.
I will be delighted if she doesn't wear bathrope again. Please Liza you're a beautiful girl no need to hide yourself in those bathrope.Mishin doesn't tell Liza what to wear (although he does give the final "yes" or "no").
