Yuzuru Hanyu: 2015-16 Season

Thanks @SuzyQ, @alia, @firal, @owl for all the updates and pictures!:)

I was thinking about his ice show on 24H TV (Aug 23, 24). Last year, the show was aired live, yet this year the term ‘live” has not been seen on any advertisement or promotion of 24H TV. Getting performance on nationwide TV live is highly tough, so he seemed to have troubled last season. Hopefully, this year the show will be filmed in Canada without live.

Wait, so he may go back to Japan? Well, as Brian said, he seems very eager to get his programs going and have them as steady as possible. He's always been very focused, but he seems to be even more so this season. So maybe they pre-recorded it? Or as you said, maybe they'll film it in Canada :) (I really hope so)

Old news for us, but the Worlds 2016 twitter also tweeted about Yuzuru's plans to retire after Pyeongchang.

Am I too mean for finding just a teeny tiny bit amusing how the media is freaking out over something Yuzuru has said countless of times before? Because for us is sort of old news, exactly.

Yeah, I hope the same so it won't disrupt his training or maybe they already film it before he left for Toronto.

Yeah, of course we cannot exclude the possibility to go back to Japan for 24TV. Yet, judging from the promotion until now, they have never said “live”. I remember well that they emphasized “live ice show” last year. Thus, I predict that this year’s show will not be live.
24TV is also scheduled to air his visit to victims in Fukushima. This was already done in last June.
Oh, I didn’t think of the situation the video has already recorded. The program is surely Requiem. They may have filmed it during this show season or somewhere:).

According to the article, as I love these his words,

He said that “I have been skating for not being famous but for my love to skate and win.
I am neither an idol nor a geino-jin (celebrity?). Without losing my spirit as an athlete, I will continue while tell that to the core of my heart.”

Question to Japanese speakers , How should we translate the word geino-jin (芸能人), if not a celebrity, in English?
It’s a bit difficult for me to convey the detailed nuance.
In addition, feel free to collect that if there are any better translations.

It's always difficult to translate it actually. I usually use "celebrities" according to the context, but "Geino-jin" does not include sports celebrities, noble family members, those in political circles (?), etc. but includes actors/actresses, comedians, singers, etc. famous in show business. So, IMO, "show business people", "show-biz celebrities", or of that kind, may describe it more correctly.

I also thought this article is a good one. It describes Yuzuru very well.

EDIT:

In return, please help me with 前人未到 zenjin mito ;)

It may be "first in history", but I think it is weak in meaning. Literally, it means "where no one has gone before." Or,
"something that has never been accomplished in history" ? I could not find a good one :scowl:

Other comments by Yuzuru in the article.

"I just told my future dream that I had drawn up in my childhood. I'm afraid my words were not enough to explain it. I have not decided yet what I would do after PyeongChang."

"I was very surprised that it was received as the announcement of retirement. Actually, I have no idea what I would think at that time. If I am not satisfied after the PyeonChang games, I would contine till I can satisfy myself. I have not decided it yet specifically. "

"I like something zenjin mito. I have wanted to become legendary, that is, someone who would be remembered in history. As a major goal, I was going to target two successive Olympic Gold Medals."

"I know how hard it would be to realize it, because I myself have experienced to become a Gold Medalist in Sochi. It may be a pressure for me to target the Gold Medal in PyeongChang again, but I can't think of any other goal."

With increased attention as an Olympic Gold Medtalist, he confesses;

"I'm rather perplexed (by the reactions surrounding me)."

and;

“I have been skating for not being famous but for my love to skate and win.
I am neither an idol nor a geino-jin. Without losing my spirit as an athlete, I will continue while tell that to the core of my heart.”

Please excuse my rough translation. And, please refer to other translations as much as possible to get the exact meaning :agree:

Oh my, seriously I have 200+ pages to back read from being away. I guess the whole summer before school starts in Fall will be devoted to back reading

Anyway, thank you everyone for the updates. I hope I will be able to catch up soon. ;)

Thanks Yhmafan and SuzyQ for initial translation and for the recommendation to read a few translations to get the exact meaning of the article. Below are 3 more:

- An English article, but I think the sentence before the last paragraph is not correct. Instead of "public's growing expectations of him winning another gold medal confuse him" it should be "the increased attention as an Olympic Gold Medalist" as you have translated.

- Translation by Yuzuland tumblr

Thank you alia ;)

Actually, I was looking for the translation of the Japan News as it is the English version of Yomiuri Shimbun, because I am lazy :p But I could not find it earlier (maybe it was not released then), so I tried myself.

It is a good lesson to read different approaches/translations for me to improve my English ability. It's very interesting.

- Suzy, it's great that you give it a go, your English and translation is :agree:. Yes, the Japan News article was not released yet at the time you posted.

- Watch Yuzu's feet in this Chopin practice zoom video

- Another GPF Barcelona tweet..."Smile" "Time flies whenever I'm with you"

- Pika-Alva, I saw GPF Barcelona re-tweet your tweet on applying as volunteer. All the best, I hope you get it :cheer:

-I love the zoom video on his feet ! I sometimes do this with my friends, it always gives a cool effect (even when your doing crap, of course not Yuzu's case) :)

-I just saw your tweet with the RT from GPF, thanks, you're so sweet ! it gave me the occasion to follow you haha!

You have a lot to read and watch

On the statements of Yuzuru about to retire or not after the Olympics 2018 I'm really sad to think that in not see it competing more, but this is a selfish emotion, since it is up to him to decide how and when to stop skating.
Only Yuzuru can decide their future, it is very new and certainly many victories and successes will still be in your future.
I think an athlete should retire at the peak of their form, thus avoiding forcing its limit and / or the limits of your body.
Yuzuru is very mature, insightful and intelligent and will use these qualities in their favor when seeking new challenges and new paths in your life.
With his retirement not only lose the fans, but also the world of skating as, Yuzuru besides being extremely talented is super charismatic outside the ring, it will be difficult to the world of skating find another one as "ready" as he.
While we are with longing to see him running around the world presenting us with memorable performances, all who admire and like Yuzuru continued to hope and wish her happiness whatever your decision.

Sorry if it's already been posted but I noticed that this article is only 30 minutes old (as of now) so hopefully it hasn't.

I don't think there's any new information in it but I don't think I've seen the photos before.

The photo is of a TV guide. Yuzuru will be a guest on NHK's morning variety show called Asaichi on August 28th.
So I guess he'll be back for the charity show and stay for at least a week unless it's recorded beforehand (I think it's usually live though).

Is this the first time that he will be on a variety show?

Well done! I know well the difficulty you felt in translating. Keep it up! About the term“前人未到” , it feels like your translation is better than unchartered territory in the article.

Thanks, the Asahi article is interesting to read.. It’s sure there’s a little bit anxiety about his shape, but he surely took lessons from last season, and Brian will help him get things going well by the beginning of the season. Yuzu feels excited for competing with Patrik! So do I! Go! Yuzu! :cheer:

Now it’s apparent yuzu is coming back around the end of August, though weather the ice show will be live or noy has still to be cleared. But as you said, he’ll likely provide some message and ice show on live TV.

The part where yuzu will appear is like a talk show in the channel named "Asaichi" mainly about daily useful information. NHK broadcast of the channel is positioned as Japan’s national public one. They will pay attention to the content so as not to cause something controversial. The talk will be polite and firm to some extent.

I was doing Yuzu's planned content next season and I think I will finally break 200 in the free skate. I did a "practice program" and with his average components and average GOE, I have him getting around 202 points. My prediction is he will do it at GPF. I used to be worried about 4S but now I'm worried about the 4T.
