First off, I was surprised by how much Yulia has changed since winter. She’s become so feminine, with an almost feline grace. Before she looked like a young girl, but now she looks like a woman already, even though she’s only 17! And it’s certainly impressive how she’s managed to adjust to her changed physique and get her jumps bigger.
I was a bit concerned when Zueva first said that she’d given her a “playful” SP, because I knew how breathtaking Yulia is in a “spiritual” style and was afraid that she might look like any other top skater in something else. But as it turned out, these fears were entirely unjustified. Apparently she has so much individuality that she looks unique in anything, be it the romantic “Can’t help falling in love,” or the cheeky “Devil in disguise,” or the hauntingly beautiful tribute to the heroic defenders of Leningrad. I thoroughly enjoyed all of it, smiling throughout her SP and mesmerized by her LP (despite the mistakes). There was a section where she might have been not quite as into it as she usually is into her programs, but it looks like she just hasn’t gotten far enough in her preparation of the LP yet. Since she owns this style, I’m sure she’ll look breathtaking throughout it by GP if not earlier. And I’m so glad she’s doing a program in this style as well as trying something new, because the reflective, introvert style is my favorite in singles skating, and nobody does it better than Yulia.
I’m not too worried about her stamina at this point. While it would have been a relief to see her breeze through her LP already, many other skaters had issues with their LPs at these test skates. I think it’s still early for most to have regained their competitive form. I was only a bit surprised by her decision to go to Finlandia Trophy in 3 weeks, if she’s working on doing the jumps in the program now. Wouldn’t it have been better to stay home and do as many complete run-throughs of the LP as possible before Skate America? But I suppose Tutberidze knows what she’s doing.
Very sorry to hear about Yulia's spine injury and very much hoping it won't plague her for long.
