Yulia Lipnitskaya

Me too.
I have been reading this forum for a long time, but never had the courage to write because of my English.
I thought that she should call it quit right after Sochi, if I rememember correctly Eteri suggested it to her as one option...
I feel bad for her if I imagine what is behind her new programs - to many battels. With legs ang boots, with her weight (I thing that her diet must be drastic), with puberty, nerves, maybe injuries...
And there is another thing that makes me sad: I never heard her saying: "I love figure skating, it is my life, I can not live without it". Lisa told it many times, for example. I always have the feeling that Yulia once decided to go to Moscau, and than she had to deal with everything, no matter what price she paid for it. But very probably the best results are achieved under pressure, now I feel like as if it were too much pressure on her, too much pressure that she can not bear, and no reason why she should do that.
Her interview was georgeous. I really like it. But it is still strange - compare it to other skateters. Lisa (again, sorry) openly spoked how important for her is her couch, what is her mother doing, how she used to live, about injuries, she openly speak about her past, present and future. Adelina the same. Not Yulia. Actually, we know very little about her, only that she cried when she moved to Moscau every day. Why was it so difficult for her? Because of money, training, or what? Or her mother, why she never say anything? It is strange.
I am really happy she won her Olympic medal and that her enormous effort and talent met the Olympics in time.
But I am not sure she can do something like that in the future and if she is, if it is worthy.

Oh my.... I only spoke about the two programmes which are still not my cup of tea (but I have faith they will grow during the season together with Yulia's condition).
I don't have anything against Yulia's attitude, indeed I like it very much! She's not a puppet that does fake smiles when people want her to smile and she doesn't say things only because people want to hear those things. And she's not searching for people's pity telling in details all the problems she had to deal with in the past.
I don't even get the thing about quitting, she's growing through her problems as we all do. Do we have to give up only because something isn't going as expected?
Please, don't get this as a personal attack, I only suggest you to appreciate people as they are and not as we want them to be :) And welcome to the forum!

She expresses gratitude to fans when she feels it, rather than in every interview, she shows resentment of excessive attention when she feels it...
It's more about us, fans than about Julia in my opinion.

Why do we ALWAYS expect athletes' public interaction, engagement outside the competition?
Why can't we accept 1 out of 10 (100?) choosing to stay more private and reserved?
The rest of them surely make up for it, don't they?
Personally, I hunt for any news about her all the time, but I fully respect that she makes it harder to me. I like the challenge!

After her SP test skate, some people commented that it was the first time she was on the ice and looked like she enjoyed figure skating. Yulia seems very introverted and a lot of times it doesn't come across that she loves skating, and I think people sometimes wonder - does she love and have a passion figure skating or is it a job that she does to support her family.

Therefore my point is, she should change her character so we can be convinced? Why? Do we like her less as a skater? Yulia is growing up and she has changed. She will continue to change. It is life, but she shouldn't change just so she can satisfy some people. She is one of the most intelligent, profound and honest skaters I've seen. Even people who dislike her skating adore reading her interviews. Everyone is entitled to their opinions but if what she says or doesn't say makes them sad, well, that's their problem. My advice to them is do not project your own feelings to your favorite skater. Enjoy their skating because it is about skating, not what they think or don't think. What they say or don't say.

I think sometimes people just get an idea into their head and sometimes idea finds it's way into other people's heads without concrete evidence. They seem to think because she usually waits awhile before dropping the character of the programs that she was always serious and didn't smile or look like she was happy but whenever people mentioned that I could think of several instances where she was very clearly happy, and she seems to be very mature and emotionally insightful. I think you can see that she loves skating because while she might have had doubts when things were going badly she always manages to get back up. I just dont think you can fight if you're not invested enough. I think the very fact that she is not totally happy with a difficult performance regardless of how it scores proves that she's in this for good skating for that feeling of adding to the world with her fantastic skating. It's her je ne se quoI that makes her skating so compelling.

OMG. Averbuch gave another interview... :hopelessness::slink:

I'm not even going to go into how bad taste it is for him to comment on Mao. I can stomach a cent or two from Mishin regarding the battle of the triple-axels in relations to his pupil....but Ilya honey, stay in your lane!

As for his comments on Yulia...
Please excuse me, my inner Destiny's Child is playing too loud right about now for me to care. All I have to say is...Yulia has conducted herself with more tact, dignity and respect than most adults would ever hope to have.
Carry On.

@Isabel: I agree with every word you wrote.

This is spot on! Especially the bold part which is very telling and amazing really. Talking about Yulia's character and what she says and she doesn't say eh? ;)
Also, I love your inner Destiny's Child.

Should Yulia ever feel the need to vent, I hope it'll be through an EX program to either a Destiny's Child mashup of Survivor and Independent Woman, OR one of the many explicitly uncensored Eminem songs on her ipod. ;)

In the vein of this immortal Yulia gif, I have this updated PC-friendly meme to contribute.

I'll just say this: having read this interview, I've lost all respect for Averbukh as a person.

I also wonder in what way Sotnikova's LP skate at the test skates was better than Yulia's. Had their titles and coaches been reversed, I bet he would have said the exact opposite.

I too don't give a flying flutz what Ilya says!

I'm not interested in reading anything he has to say about anything because no matter what he is talking about it always seems to somehow wind up being about him.

Don't be mad. It's a total waste of time to comment on his comments about Yulia. He has spoken so much about her since last season that it has become a joke.
Let's use this instead. ;) I think it's the best answer. Courtesy of moviebuff!

Guts over fear :)

Do you mind sharing the interview? I can't find it.

Your first post here makes me laugh a lot... Actually I agree with you on some points, but many of her devoted fans love her too much to bring their strong emotions under control whenever someone expressed different opinions in her thread, just like those Russian fans who are going at it hammer and tongs over the news that Julia planned to prepare her first GP event in the US under the guidance of Zueva. Julia's current state is not all about her nerves of steel or outside pressure, and people's blind love for her is in fact preventing her from seeing very clearly at what position she is now. Just take it easy, and it will not be the end of the world even though your unremitting efforts end in failure. This is my sincere advice for Julia.
