It was such a stressful trip to Lethbridge with Yuzuru and Elizavetta ending in 6th and 7th places after short program. Both I and my husband were angry, quiet, and nervous till the free skate. And, then bang! Both came back with such skates. During Yuzuru's free skate I was hanging to my husband's arm and shouting the next jump "Quad sal, quad sal, quad sal, ..." then "Quad toe, quad toe, quad toe, ..." and then ... The people around me were like :devil: but I couldn't control it. I am not sure if I want to go and watch any other competition live. Seriously, I need one week rest.
 
I think Hanyu is a 'skater' but focused on the athletic side. He wants to up both sides of his skating but his TES always comes first. If he stopped to up his technnical to a level that wears him off completely in order to focus even more on the artistic side and the integrity of the performance he could be a 'bigger skater' per se and be more appreciated but this is not the path that he has choosen for his career. His big TES disminish his quality at the LP but he can live with that and I think that's something that a more athlete skater would be more willing to cope with. However, I think he has an innate musicality and emotional side that is both his strenght because it makes him compelling to some but that at the same time puts him out of control.

An ideal 'skater' supposedly should be someone that is both athletic and artistic in equal amounts (I know it's impossible but still, it's the goal).

Within this, for me 'artistic' can be split in two meanings :

1. The spontaneous expression of feelings. Basically you do the choreography, you move, because you feel the music and feel compelled by it. It's the urge to perform, it doesn't matter how you do it, it just needs to be truthful. It's the start point, the core of everything.

2. The impeccable positions of a classical dancer. Basically you move aesthetically "right", polished, your back straight. This is your ideal tool, your means.

So by naturally having (1) and using the (2), the final result would be: You use classical positions to express something therefore creating an artistic performance, right?

Hanyu surely checks the first box, he has this one down pat, but never the second.

If you just can't embrace the two at the same time and for you the second must be present to make a skater artistic, it doesn't matter if he has the first, then Hanyu will never be artistic for you; therefore for you Hanyu is only an athlete because he isn't artistic enough to be a full skater.
On the opposite side, If you consider the first a must, then Hanyu is incredibly artistic and is the "skater" while Chan will never be artistic, *shock* he actually is the athlete.


Conclusion: "Artistic" is a mess of a word because people just throw around and start endless arguments about it, while all of them have different definitions of it and none of them is right, it's just entirely subjective.

News clip and interview from yesterday. Before Sochi he always said P Chan is like the sun to him whom he 's been lookin up to. After SC this year after the FS and maybe after press conference he said " Since I met the Sun again, and see his light, I was able to see my shadow. He lit up and showed me my flaw and shortcomings and told me what are the things I have to work on to better myself. " I love his attituede and this is why I can always believe in him that he will push the boundary of the sports and be the ultimate champion. I am also happy that Chan's strong comeback, because that is what Yuzu needs to secure his place toward the next Olympic. He always needs challenge. Last year, he did not have one.

That was a really really great quote! So good that they can meet this early in the season and starts to push each other to be more an more.

Regarding that ANAN magazine cover, according to this, it will include a personal message from him, 16 pages, big poster, and off-ice shots! :gclap:

Such a nice meaningful quote by him. It's so mature too. Glad that he'll have the drive to keep striving to be better and perfect his flaws even more. :2thumbs:


Talking about 'artistic' can be very subjective as every individual perceive or view it differently. I'd say that he possess both side, athlete and skater (though technically as a 'skater', it's only better that you have to have both). Agree with what you guys have said that his 'athlete' side seems to be highlighted more in a free program and we can sort of see both sides equally in his short.
But actually, even if we might not be able to witness one yet, there is a potential that he'll actually be able to highlight both of it in his free especially since it's got step sequence and interpretation/choreography part that is more apparent compared to the short. However, I understand especially with his hugely packed program like his is, it's difficult to get the best of both sides. It comes at a price, certainly.. that it can be seen like he only concentrates on technical elements, especially when he got tired after the 2nd half and pay less attention to detail to the performance part. That's one thing to improve. But I think it's ok and I see that he always tries his best to perform and less of just going through motion, because he's a fighter.
Furthermore, with the highly competitive environment, it's only natural to want to be able to continue progressing with the technical/athlete side first, and consider that the artistic side can come later as one gets more confident and comfortable executing those technical stuff.
I always look forward to see Yuzu grows even more and would love to be here to witness it.

Well I doubt he would be shirtless, but its not like he doesn't have the abs to do it (hope that doesn't sound weird...) Remember he is an athlete, not an idol :P Has any other skater been on that mag?

First skater to be the cover of ANAN. Other athlete, yes some, only the good looking very popular ones mainly soccer (football) player and always very sexy set up shirtless or not:hap93:

I always tear up when I see what mishin said to yuzu!!! So touching!!! I would have no regrets if a legendary coach like him.says that to me......

Maybe my translation of Yuzu's words was bit misleading, so just let me clarify just in case you misunderstood. P Chan never told Yuzu what Yuzu has to do to better himself (
that is not Patrick's character, you know what I mean :roll5:), but from the performance P Chan has given in the SC, Yuzu saw his own shortcomings( and he also said his over confidnece,) what he has to correct.

I don't think there's much to do with the competitive environment as much as it's because of Hanyu's own ambitious character. Several skaters like Chan are under the same competitive enviroment but choose not to up their technnical content that high because the approach is to try to skate clean first and foremost; with a suficient amount of technnical content that is still challenging but can be more comfortably executed. This is the common approach of the ones that usually become 'bigger skaters', the ones that put the artistic side first. For Hanyu skating clean is a goal but it's only satisfying when he lands all the high technnical content that he aims to. He will be more satisfied with a skate with 3 quads landed and a lutz fall, than a clean one but with the 3rd quad tripled. That's just how he works; it's his athletic side being predominant and what prevents him from becoming an even split between athlete/skater. And this is not only applied to the FP since he aims to put 2 quads in the SP at the future. His 'lack of stamina' could be simply solved by just watering down even by a little the content and that's what most skaters would do and what seems appreciated by a larger portion of people and what actually would even make him win more if coupled with consistency so I don't consider 'lack of stamina' a shortcoming for him at all, it's a choice. He's aware of that and still chooses to push through even if it visibly affects his form. It will always be there, he will always be dying by the end of his skates since his body is never on par with his mind because his ideal is always one step further, for the delight of some and for the despise of others. Of course I wonder what type of 'bigger skater' he could be in an alternative universe that Hanyu isn't as ambitious as he is but it won't happen. Even if Chan beats him with one quad every single time he would still keep his layout hoping that some day he will hit everything because this allows him to not only beat Chan but also achieve his personal goals that are constantly changing. It's delusional or brave; frustrating or fascinating, it can bring him glory or it can bring him hate, depends on how you personally see it. That's why I think there will always be a certain potential not fully realized in him as a 'skater'.
