I haven’t seen Yulia’s skate yet, just the protocols, the photos and the reactions here. I’m very glad that she apparently skated a very inspiring performance and mad that with that she got all 7s in PCS. It just doesn’t make sense to me to lower the score for any program components for inconsistency any more than to lower GOEs for elements for mistakes at previous competitions. And why should all the PCS be always about the same?
Here is a new interview with Yulia (in Russian):

The journalist wrote a positive review of her performance. When he asked Yulia to compare it to the one at SA, she said this one was better, although she was still nervous, which shows on Lutzes and Flips. Still she thinks she’s skated quite confidently, and while previously her physical condition kept deteriorating, now she feels herself more or less ready, although they haven’t upended the jump content yet.
- Another difference that caught the eye was the new dress. Why have you changed it?
- We jump from one extreme to the other: at first childishly bright, now somberly grown up, - laughs Yulia. There were many positive reactions on the former dress, mostly from fans, but there were negative ones too. That’s why we decided to make new one austere and in fine taste.
- How do you feel yourself in the new costume?
- The new dress is more comfortable, of course. I feel myself more grown up in it.
She further mentions in reply to a question which part of the SP she finds more relatable that Zueva thought the SP with the two contrast songs would suit her because she “looks angelic, while inside… well, it’s a matter of taste.” The journalist asks her if she refers to those who called her “a tank” – I guess, a reference to her deadly focus and determination. She replies that that’s what she used to be like, but that now that she’s gotten older she’s become a lot kinder and more open, although sometimes when she prepares for a performance, of course, she has to retire into herself (in order to focus).
- During test skates in Sochi you said that you can’t get used to this program.
- I just didn’t know then how I would be received in this program, how I’d look in it, how I’d be scored. That’s why I couldn’t relax. And now I know that this program is appreciated and scored well. Besides, it’s more or less well trained. So I feel calmer.
- It’s impossible for you now to get into the GPF. Has in affected your motivation?
- One has to fight in any case.
Personally, I liked her previous SP dress more. I don’t think it was childish. I thought she looked her age in it, while in this one she looks a bit older. And it was original, beautiful and fitted the program perfectly IMO. But if she feels more comfortable in this one, then so be it, of course.
And, as always, I admire her determination.
